My DS, 6, absolutely loves his hanna andersson clothes. They are outfits I bought for him a couple years ago when he was 4 and in preschool. They were very cute then, but that was in preschool.

Now, it is what he wants to wear to school every day. I think he looks to old to dress like that and he looks kind of dorky and babyish. I bought him lots of more trendy clothes for school, but he doesn't really like them and says baggy pants are uncomfortable, which is right. So, he requests his matching hanna outfits daily.

They would look cute on a blonde, swedish looking child, but on my tall skinny dark haired lil boy, it just doesn't seem to be the best look.

So, I need to go out and buy him some new clothes this week. Should I buy him the Hanna's which look kind of dorky IMO, but he adores, feels confident in and are comfortable, or should I force him to wear what I think looks nice? This is for day to day wear at Kindergarten.

At what age do children start picking their own clothes?

I know, I know, I probably worry way to much about how to dress a little kid, but hey, I am a stay at home mom with too much time on her hands;) .

i am a 24 year old and not a parent, so take this advice with a grain of salt if you'd like to. :)

i was unfamiliar with the brand of clothes you mentioned, but i just looked on their website in the "boys section" and there were plenty of clothes that didn't look geeky or uncool to me. i'd say let your son wear what he feels comfortable in (within reason of course). wearing the clothes that were on that website, i don't think he'd get made fun of, but it's been awhile since i was in kindergarden. :)

Another one that wasn't familiar with their clothing. So, I took a peek at the website. In the boys section, I didn't see any clothes that were different then what you would buy at a department store. If he likes them, then I would myself would buy them for him to wear.

Is your son as cute as those boys on the website? I miss my boy. I wish he was little again. He's 22 now and lives away from home.

He'd look very stylish in those clothes. If you can still agree on clothes, go for it. When he wants to wear GOTH stuff in the future, you may have a different battle on your hands.

Thankfully, mine never wanted that, he did sport blue hair for a while. Kids!

I'm with the others. I do know Hanna Andersson and love the clothes...I think there are many options that aren't dorky or too young. Granted, my son is only 21 months, but I have nieces and a nephew in the 4-9 range and I think these clothes fit right in with what they are wearing.

where are you buying it? do they have a smaller selection that maybe only shows the younger stuff?

I would go with what he's comfortable and confident in.

I'm familiar with Hanna clothes and I think they look great...and are just perfect for a Kindergartener....

I love Hanna's...the clothes wear so nicely and feel so great on! DD has been picking out her own clothes since she was about 4. I figure she's the one who has to wear them so she may as well. If your son is happy with the clothes he's chosen, I say all the more power to him. Be happy he doesn't feel an overwhelming need to conform or follow the crowd...and hope it follows him throughout his life.

Yes, thank you for that. I hope he remains like that DESPITE his mother;)

I wouldn't worry, he will let you know when the clothes you buy him are 'too dorky' for school, LOL.

Btw, I have 'allowed' my kids to pick their own clothes since they could talk, within reason. For me, it's about not 'sweating the small stuff'...unless they want to wear something entirely inappropriate (for their age, weather etc.), I think what they wear should be their choice.

My DS-3.5 is in need of an entire cool weather wardrobe. Please let me know if you want to sell any of your DS's pre-school stuff!

woo hoo! I could do some serious damage to the credit card on that website! :)

My DD wore 'Hanna's' until second or third grade. And, she'll tell you, she's no dork! :p

I let my kids decide what they wanted to wear when they were started Kindergarten. I have to remind them of the school dress policy sometimes though.

DD is 4 and has had very strong opinions about what she will and won't wear. As long as she chooses things I think are appropriate and don't break the bank then that's what I buy. I choose my battles carefully.

If your son likes the clothes and you can afford them then I would buy them. The fact that they are appropriate is a given. I think a lot of parents would be thrilled to have a child that wasn't interested in the latest styles.
