Hanging up my running shoes-Update on ZellyB

Yay, Beaches & Cream! I will warn you, the grilled cheese there is RICH. I definitely would not eat that as my dinner the night before a race...but when you dip it in the tomato soup it's deeeelicious.

Congrats to Chris on getting those shorts! I gotta say, I'm pretty jealous of them...I love the compression layer underneath and I REALLY love the zipper pocket on the waist. That's something I miss from SparkleSkirts. And woohoo for Robot! :yay:

Cute robot outfit! And those men's shorts are cool! Make sure to take pics when you guys have them on! :)

I'll try to do that!

You can do the Kitchen Sink with 5 no problem. We did it with 4.

Aww good to know. I'm guessing we'd manage to polish it off. :)

Good to know about the grilled cheese. We are planning it for lunch after the half, so hopefully that will give my body time to process it before the marathon the next morning. We are doing Rainforest Café for dinner that night, so hopefully that will give us a variety of choices for dinner.

Random catching up on your thread thoughts :)

Happy birthday! That cruise looks amazing!

I had the best thing at Beaches n Cream two trips ago called the frozen sunshine which was the equivalent of a shake made out of creamsicles. I saw it on someone's trip report and it just sounded so good. So I highly reccomend that if you are an orange fan. Had it with dinner and was so so stuffed.

You talking about your family reminded me of my sis and I once she went away to college. Funny how things can change from bickering to besties with just the thought of time apart. I lived for time I got to spend with her after that point...still do :)

Dory Shoes!! I always need to find a disney character to fit my shoes. I had "buzz lightyear" shoes last year and now I have "maleficent's"
Yours are definitely Dory.

Continual happy thoughts for your knee as well. :)

That frozen sunshine thing sounds delicious!! And, hey, you are right, my shoes do have a definite Dory color scheme going on!

TRAINING WEEK 7/11 - 7/16
Working my way back to marathon training

I'm a bit behind on getting last week's training up, but here we go...

Monday 7/11 - Still didn't want to get back to the circuit training. I'm not very excited about doing it these days. There was another woman who was joining me earlier this summer, but she sort of dropped off, so doing it alone while Chris does free weights in another room makes it hard to get me motivated. But, I really do need to force myself back into it.

Tuesday 7/12 - 4 mile run. This run was pretty good. The heat and humidity here are still really bad though, so it's a struggle even at 5 in the morning. Still trying to get some decent conditioning back, but it sure feels slow going. Overall pace was 11:02.

Wednesday 7/13 - Stair running. We finally managed to get ourselves going for stair running. We run a three flight set of stairs in a parking garage. We run the three flights up and down 7 times and then take a short break and then do it again. Our plan is to do that 3 times, but we started a bit late this morning, so cut it short at 2 circuits. I don't love running stairs, but when we did it last year, I found it really helped me with running hills, so I want to stick with it again. Today is also my dad's birthday. He's 92 and still going strong. He goes to the local gym everyday and walks their indoor track. Hope I'm still that active at that age!

Thursday 7/14 - It was raining today, so no maintenance run. :(

Friday 7/15 - Rest day.

Saturday 7/16 - There was no formal Galloway group run today as many of the members were running a "Girls Just Wanna Run" race. I don't do that race since it's a women's only race and I like running with Chris. :) So, we planned to meet up with some others who weren't running it and do an informal run. My plan called for 10 miles as I'm continuing to work my way back up to the marathon mileage training plan that the group is running. I mapped out a route that runs along one of our trails but in a section I'd never run on before. We ended up with 6 of us running together although two of the guys outpaced us and so were ahead of us most of the run. We got lucky that we had some cloud cover and a nice breeze for the run which helped make the temps more manageable. The trail was just beautiful! We definitely need to run this part of the trail more. It goes through a local park that has a small lake and it was truly beautiful!!

So beautiful!! We also decided to get a fun shot climbing up on some playground equipment, but it worked better in our minds than it did in reality.

I did pretty well through the first 6 miles and we were maintaining about a 10:45 pace, but I definitely started to fatigue and had to slow down. :( Still finished out the 10 miles with an 11:33 pace. I think our actually moving pace was more like around an 11 or 11:15. We lost a lot of time trying to get that playground shot and I didn't stop my watch. :rotfl:

Did the run wearing my fun INKnBurn tank top that was the mystery top from May the 4th and Cinco de Maya. C3PO and Sugar Skull mashup! Love it.

All in all, I was pretty pleased with the run. 10 miles is the furthest I've gone since hurting my knee back in April, so it's nice to feel like I'm back on the road to normal solid training again even if my pace has suffered a bit. Tomorrow my plan is to do 12 and if I'm feeling good enough even try to get to 15 since that's what the group mileage calls for. But, it's going to be brutally hot and humid again, so I'll just listen to my body and do whatever I think I can manage.

So glad you are feeling better with that dang knee! 10 miles at the pace ya'll did...well that is a goal of mine so I think its great!
Looking good in that InB shirt, can't wait to see the Red Robot. I had to go ahead and order that new Serpentine capri they just put out-dank InB!
Loving your TR ZellyB!

Thanks for continuing to read along! I'm pretty excited for Red Robot. I was REALLY tempted with the new capri but it has some similarities to Mermaid, so I managed to resist. But it was hard!!!

10 miles is nothing to sneeze at - awesome job!! Cute group selfies, even if they did drop your pace down a bit. :) The stair running is a great idea, I could totally see how that would help you on hills.

That's awesome about your dad!! I really admire that. :)

Thanks. My dad is pretty amazing. I hope I'm still pushing and working out when I'm that age. #lifegoals

TRAINING WEEK 7/17 - 7/23
Somebody turn down the heat!!!

Sunday 7/17 - Rest day. Happily I was feeling pretty good after the 10 mile run. The knee is doing great and very nearly back to normal. Very happy about that!!
Monday 7/18 - Nautilus circuit training today. I finally got myself to go back in, but I just am not loving doing it. I need to probably figure something else out for some strength training. I also walked about a mile on the treadmill waiting for Chris to finish up.
Tuesday 7/19 - 4 mile run. Nothing too special here. Just our normal 4 mile training route. Still doing our :90/:30 intervals although I'd love to push these shorter runs to 2:00/:30, but with the heat and humidity the way they are, I think I just need to be content for now to get it done. Overall pace was 11:14.
Wednesday 7/20 - Stair running. We managed to do the full 3 circuits this time around. Chris and I both took the day off because we had an appointment, so we had some extra time to be sure and do the whole thing. Saw a bat hanging out on the wall at the top of the stairs. Chris propped the door open at the top to give him an exit. I was worried that once the day heated up he would die in there. I don't know if he took advantage of the escape route or not, but I hope so.
Thursday 7/21 - AGAIN with the heat. :sunny: My alarm went off at 4:30 and I checked the temperature - 78 degrees already. BLECH. My plan for Saturday was to run 12 miles but I was secretly hoping maybe I could do the full 15 that the marathon training group would be doing, so we decided to stop at just 3 miles today in hopes of saving some energy for Saturday. It was a hot, sweaty slow run. Overall pace 11:26. Felt like running through molasses.
Friday 7/22 - Rest day.
Saturday 7/23 - Our run was set to start at 6 AM and it was already well into the 70s. I wish our group leader would start us at 5 during these hot days and long runs, but she just refuses to start before 6. It really stinks especially when you consider that our groups are pretty slow. With this late of a start the slowest groups wouldn't be done with their 15 miles until around 10 AM. Anyway, we started out with a pretty slow pace to be cautious of the heat. We had a pretty good group and I was doing pretty well until we were approaching the finish of the first 7 mile loop. It's an uphill finish and I just kept finding myself a bit further and further behind the group. At the turnaround, I gave Chris the directions and told him to go on and that I'd work on finishing out 12 miles but slowing down my pace. I managed to keep the intervals and a decent pace going until about mile 9 and then the heat just started to really beat me up, so I slowed down even more and did more walking and did manage to finish out my 12 miles with an overall pace of 12:59. Around mile 10 or 11, I started beating myself up a bit and then managed to shake myself out of it. My original plan was 12 miles and that's what I accomplished. It was nearly 85 degrees by the time I finished, so with Galloway's suggested slow down of :30 per every 5 degrees over 65, I was pretty well where I was supposed to be, so I decided to be satisfied with what I accomplished and then work on my planned schedule to get back to marathon mileage. I just kept thinking how much faster and better I will feel once fall temperatures arrive!!

Chris and the rest of the group came in a short time later having finished out their 15 around an 11:30 pace which was great under the conditions. A couple of the others cut their runs short as well. It was just a brutal day and sometimes it's best just to back off rather than push and end up hurting yourself.

So, a pretty good week of training and I do feel like I'm starting to get back to some normalcy in my training. Now if the temps will just cooperate!!

After we got home, we headed out to my parents' lake house for the rest of the afternoon and night. My son and his girlfriend came along (my girls are still in Virginia with their uncle and grandparents). We waited until early evening to head out and had a nice ride on the boat and the kids and Chris did some innertubing behind the boat and then we took a nice swim. Sunday morning was spent sipping coffee on the deck and looking at this view...

Pretty gorgeous, right? Chris made some pancakes later and I got a special plate of them...

Gotta love a man who enables your Disney addiction, right?

That's it for this week's training update. Hoping for another good week this week!!

Gotta love a man who enables your Disney addiction, right?

Nothing wrong with enabling a Disney addiction. My wife likes to make fun of me for mine, but then turns around and enables it. I keep telling her she can't have it both ways.

Glad to see your training is getting back to normal. I keep struggling with cross training as well, even though I need it, especially core work. It seems no matter where you were, Saturday was just a brutal day for running. Good job on getting out there and getting it done.

Good to hear your son decided to join you as well. It's always fun to travel with the whole family. My son is coming along too, but at 7 months he doesn't have much of a say in the matter.

Yay for the knee getting better, and yay for getting your stair running in!

That stinks that you aren't enjoying the circuit training, hopefully you can find something you enjoy/look forward to more. :confused3

Way to finish your 12 miles!! That is an awesome accomplishment! As we have been talking about, this heat is no joke!

Ah, yes, the good old days when my kids did what I said and stayed where I put them. I remember that fondly! :)

No kidding. Pure misery. I think we are supposed to get a little bit of a break this week. It's been raining all day today, so maybe we'll get at least a little bit of a cool down.

When I read "Nautilus training" my mind immediately went to 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, but I don't think that's what you were referring to :)

I commend you on 12 miles that day because I was going to do maybe 2-3 and I punked out because it was just so hot and my training wasn't starting yet.

Annnnnnnnd now I want a mickey pancake. Because everyone knows they taste better than regular ones.

Sounds like a great training week! Glad the knee is doing well!

This is what I keep telling myself. Over and over and over.

Mickey pancakes absolutely taste the best!! With the heat and humidity lately, it feels like I'm 20,000 leagues under the sea. Ugh.

It has to cool off eventually, right?

I'm afraid I would be like your group run leader and refuse to get out before 6. I am so not an early morning person. I get what you mean about the high temps though! I think it's amazing you got in 12 miles with the heat!

TRAINING WEEK 7/24 - 7/30
From Boring to Miserable

Sunday 7/24 - As I shared, we spent the morning at the lake and had a nice restful Sunday.
Monday 7/25 - No strength training again. I'm not sure what is going on with me, but I'm just in an incredible funk about training. We are having some family challenges and stresses right now and that's part of it, but I'm having a hard time with motivation. :(
Tuesday 7/26 - 4 mile run. Once again just a normal maintenance run. Hot and humid, but we got it done.
Wednesday 7/27 - Planned to do stair running, but again my general lack of enthusiasm kept me in bed. Chris got up and did it though with some friends.
Thursday 7/28 - Chris had an early meeting this morning, so we cut the run short at just 3 miles. Pretty sluggish again today, but at least we did it.
Friday 7/29 - Rest day.
Saturday 7/30 - The weather this morning was slightly cooler with around 70 degree temps at start time, but the humidity remained ugly. This was set for an 8 mile run with the group and we had a good number show up. It's a pretty easy 4 mile loop that is pretty flat and easy to run with one hill with only a slight incline although it goes on for a very long time. Part of this training run are part of the marathon route we will be running in November. The first loop went pretty well for me and we were right around an 11:00 pace, but around mile 6, I was having a hard time keeping up with the group. I told Chris to go without me and I dropped down to a :60/:30 interval and reset my watch. As I went on I just struggled more and more and mentally I was just D.O.N.E. Not really sure why I felt so lousy, but I eventually went to at :30/:30 interval and even skipped some run intervals at that. I just wanted to have it over with. By the end I was incredibly discouraged. The group is set to run 17 next week and I need to do at least 15, but after that run I'm not sure I can do that at all. I'm pretty bummed about it. My hamstring has been a bit sore since the run as well, so I'm trying to baby it a bit. The only good news, my knee feels fine! :)

So, where to go from here. Well, first thing is stick with my plan. I really want to run our local marathon and obviously no way I'm not going to be ready for Goofy, so now is the time to just buck up and get 'er done. I'm thinking I may just continue to try and do the first half of these group runs with our normal pace group and then drop back on interval and pace for the second half and hold on for fall and cooler temps.

I also told Chris that I want to go back to weight training with him again on free weights. He has a work out designed for women that I think I need to try for awhile and see how I do. I'm also going to go back to fueling more like I used to on runs. With the ketogenic eating, I'd gotten where I just wasn't fueling at all during runs other than electrolytes. I'm wondering now if some of my struggle is just not enough fuel. We've not been as good about being strict on the diet, so maybe that is all catching up to me as well.

How's that for a depressing training update? ;) Hoping for a better week this week.

Here's a good reminder of why I'm putting myself through this. Your RDP...
