Handicapped 1br at OKW, need info

Does anyone know if there are handicapped 1br at OKW. We requested a 1st floor for medical reasons. Will they give us a handicapped room and if there is a handicapped room, what are the layouts like. Is it a good room or not. What are the differences from a regular 1br.

I have just 1 room report on a HA 1 BR at OKW-3415. That would be in the Turtle Pond area, not far from the bus stop. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the condition or view.

Most HA are on the first floors at OKW, but not all first floor rooms are HA. If you are looking for HA, state that in your request. If you just need a room without stairs for medical reasons, state THAT on your request so you don't end up with a HA bath. The HA showers are roll ins and quite messy if you don't need them. They also have modified kitchens that can be a bit inonvenient.

They have things you will notice, like raised seat toilets with grab bars next to them, roll in shower and sinks that can be rolled under. The fully wheelchair accessible units also have a roll in shower (There are also handicapped units which are not fully wheelchair accessible that have regular tub/showers that have grab bars. Those units don't have roll under sinks). The one and 2 bedroom units still have the whirlpool tub. Other things you won't notice, like raised outlets, lowered light switches and a lower peek hole on the front door. That's for the fully
The OKW handicapped units have the same general layout as the regular units (there's anough extra space in the unit that they don't have to change furniture placement to allow a 30 inch wheelchair passage space anywhere).

We stayed in a two bedroom HA. We had requested ground floor and no stairs. The HA's are totally wheelchair accessible, as stated above. The roll in shower has a seat and a shower head that can be hand held. Yes the floor can get a bit messy depending on how you aim the shower head. I finally got the knack after a few showers. The bathroom counter is lower with fewer cabinets so that a wheelchair can roll up to the sink more easily.
If you need the wheelchair accessiblity then be sure to ask for it. If you only need the ground floor to avoid stairs then specify that. Remember the newest buildings have elevators so the steps are not an issue.

"New" is sometimes a relative concept. In this case, buildings 62, 63 and 64 were the last added at OKW, but they are now over 5 years old. They were open and sold before VWL, BCV and SSR opened. They were built on the site of the original DVC sales center- unneeded once it moved to BWV- and were part of the original plan for the resort.
