Hand washing station at Cabanas on the Magic

While she was in dry-dock, the Magic had hand washing stations installed at the entrances to Cabanas. Now, instead of handing out hand-sanitizer wipes, a CM asks guests to wash their hands. Personally, I am torn on this. I prefer soap and water over the wipes, but the wipes seem a little easier to control. With only seven faucet/soap/towel dispensers between the two doors, it seems like traffic might get a little bottle-necked. Less considerate people might opt to skip the wash on their way to the buffet line.

On the other hand, a slower entry might end up meaning fewer traffic jams in the lines.

We went to Cabanas at odd times, so I didn't see any issues with the new system. I hope they don't decide to try it at any if the MDRs...that would really cause a traffic jam.

They were also installed on the Wonder at the dry dock that included adding Tiana's Place. It was a bit frustrating at times since young kids don't really know how to wash their hands and take a long time when they do it. It can really slow things down. I'm not sure it really improves much of anything as it takes more than just a 30 second wash to do much and that's all that most people did.

I went on the Wonder both before and after the addition of the stations. I really didn't notice much difference. There can be a line form but it clears rather quickly. I do slightly prefer the hand washing station, as at least mentally I think I got more accomplished than I do when I quickly wipe a sanitizing towel over them.

I like the hand wash stations. However, last summer the water on the Wonder was HOT! Too hot for me and way too hot for DD. I hope they have that better regulated.

It certainly was at the perfect temperature last month.

We much prefer the washing stations to the wipes. Those are not at all sufficient to prevent contamination at a buffet.

We never had an issue with excessive wait at the stations on Fantasy and Wonder, except a couple of times where previous guests were being inconsiderate : one man was washing his hands for a good two minutes and blocking two faucets. My doctor of a wife said that a was being so thorough that he was ready for surgery. The other time, a family started having a conversation in front of the sink for a long while. They looked at us and the CM with evil eyes when we both asked them to move...

Are they like the automatic washing stations in the kids clubs?

No, it’s a communal sink with four soap dispensers and faucets. There is one at both entrances to Cabanas. There are also paper towels dispensers to dry your hands.

I really like the sink set up on the Fantasy. Unfortunately, there are inconsiderate people that skip wipes and hand washing. I've seen them take a wipe and then immediately deposit it in a trash can. How hard is it to wipe your hands on the way to the trash? They are just doing it on principle.

So we always wash and use wipes but also I now carry Clorox non-bleach hand sanitizer that is supposed to kill noro. We use it after touching the serving utensils and before eating.

Totally agree. Even if people don't care if they get sick, or if they say they never get sick, it's still incredible inconsiderate to everyone else on board to go in and touch the serving utensils without washing your hands or at least using a wipe. It's why I tend to avoid buffets whenever possible. :sad2:

And these vacations cost a lot of money! Call me a germaphobe if you want but I don't have unlimited funds and vacation days away from work. I want to do everything I can to avoid illness during my very limited time off. It's not hard to wash hands - all the supplies are there and a 30 second wash removes most germs from your hand contact surfaces. It's too bad that some people find that to be too much effort.

I might be one of the people you see despose of a wipe without using it, but you can’t always assume the worst. I can get extremely bad eczema on my hands and the wipes that DCL uses can inflame my hands to the point they crack and bleed. I stop in the restrooms and wash my hands well before meals and then make sure I don’t touch anything on my way to the dining room. I usually take the wipe since declining it creates confusion and questions but then I throw it away. For what it’s worth I try to mention loudly that I just washed my hands so any looks-Loos feel better, but I’m sure some people are judging.

I liked the hand washing stations when we were on the Wonder last month. It may have caused a bit of slow down, but I felt it was worth it. However, it was a little awkward when I was going in an out of Cabanas for stuff. There were a couple times when we were couldn't get a table in the main part of the restaurant so we were closer to the pool. We have two kids that are too little to get their own stuff or be left unsupervised, so I regularly would wash my hands once (and my kids) and then go in an out of Cabanas to get food and drinks and everything for 4 people. I'm sure people were giving me the side eye at not washing my hands when I was on my 2nd or 3rd trip in a row.

I'm excited to hear about the handwashing stations! I didn't mind the wipes too much (I'd rather have my hands clean...well, cleaner...than fuss about the delivery system), but overall I strongly prefer handwashing over wipes and sanitizers. Wipes are a good middle ground because they can actually remove dirt from your hands, but I always feel like my hands have some kind of residue on them and/or get dried out. Real handwashing leaves them feeling much more clean.

Also, not everyone washes their hands equally. Most people working in the healthcare industry are going to wash for 1-2 minutes w/ soap and hot water. People like my sons will spend 1-2 seconds washing...not what I call clean at all.

I truly think the average passenger is not going to wash their hands the recommended amount of time to kill germs.

We personally disliked the washing stations on our Wonder cruise. They rarely had a CM available with wipes, so a large percentage of guests would see the wait for the washing station and walk through without washing their hands OR using wipes. I don’t consider myself a germaphobe, but EEW!

My daughter has terrible eczema on her hands so I totally get it! I think she was even having trouble with the soap at the Cabanas washing station. I carry wipes and sanitizer that doesn't bother her, among other things. I can understand the occasional wipe rejection but I have seen too many to believe that they are legitimately allergic. Same folks leave the restroom without washing. Yuck!
