For those of you who like to think ahead, and work on projects with your kiddos, and make gifts for Christmas - I came across this GREAT gift idea.

http://www.prudentbaby.com/2010/02/diy-gift-kid-art-trivet.html

A little pre-planning using a Michae'ls coupon(s) could let you get the cork and Modge Podge for 40% or 50% off. I don't konw about the tiles- I think you can get just a few at a home improvement store, and they aren't that expensive.

Sorry for tossing this out to you in Feb - I will not remember this idea in the fall. (DD is waaaayyy past the age where she would find this idea "fun")

Very cute.

I've used the same technique to make trivets that say "Martha Stewart does not live here" for the women in our family from Santa. I also bought a print from target that I turned into a trivet. (It was of the Lion outside of the Art Institute in Chicago and I made it to celebrate our daughter's getting hired there.)

Personally I say save you money. I would not want a trivet.

Maybe that makes me a Scrooge but I find that I could care less about other people crafting, I would rather not have a gift and have a personal time together. Maybe a lunch or a coffee together. That means a lot more to me then junk that i will donate.

If it's from the kids I would much rather have them write a letter about themselves or how we are friends.

I think those are very cute...they make cute gifts for the FE on disney cruises, I would have to worry about the weight - but super cute idea!!

For the last couple years I have been making gifts for the women in my family for Christmas so this is perfect idea!

Thanks,

I may make these with my 4-H group!

No need to worry. I wasn't planning on making you any.

Thanks for sharing this idea!
Great idea to get a head start on Christmas craft.

Thanks for the great idea! My sister and her daughters(20 & 21) love getting handmade gifts from my DD. Maybe it's because they always made things for me when they were little and I still have some of the things floating around the house.

Rather than doing the modge podge thing, couldn't you just paint directly onto the tile?

Some of us treasure those handmade gifts as well as our memories of time spent together. Those wouldn't be a waste of money, or cared less about, or donated, in our house.
OP, thanks for a great gift idea, perfect for the Grandmothers in our family.

You would need to fire it to seal it in then.

A thought I had is that you could also do this same method with wrapping paper or wall paper. This would be a great way to use up old scraps of things left around the house.

:thumbsup2. I was thinking the same thing....or Christmas cards. I get some REALLY pretty ones and they would make really pretty holiday trivets! Wonder if a photo would work?

What is "FE?"

I've tried it with photos. Tried a collage from old pictures. It worked better to make a color copy of them on regular xerox paper. The old pictures had a variety of types of paper and that called for too many coats of modpodge to try to even it out.

I did a collage of her grandkids eating and it has lasted my Mom 5 years. But, I think she is very careful with it.

I think coasters would be nice too, especially for older kids who can do smaller work.

In our family, we each have an assigned coaster near the kitchen sink so we can keep track of our drinking glasses. We always get comments what a good idea that is, so my kids have made them for grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.

FE is a fish extender.. On the disney cruises, us fellow disers tend to get together and put little pocket hangers outside the cabin doors and we leave each other little trinkets, doo dads, etc.. If you did a search for FE or fish extender, Im sure you'd find some pictures.. When we went on our Disney cruise a few years ago we participated and I got some really cute things.. some homemade magnets, a cd, some things from where fellow disers live, etc..

OP-- cute idea!
