Does anyone have a good recipe for ham soup that does NOT call for the ham bone? I stupidly threw out the bone and now I am kicking myself.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Kristen

What kind of beans? I just made Goya Split green Pea soup yesterday and the ham made it just fantastic.

not sure what kind of recipe your looking for, I usually just add the ham or bone to whatever beans/soup I'm cooking. gives it a good flavor
the bone just gives more flavor on top of the ham.

in my house cooking is mostly trial and error.

Yes! I actually just made it today! My grandmother made it with the bone, but I never got her real recipe before she passed  so I tinkered around with what I knew and I have a great copycat without the bone. Here it is... sorry that it's not in better measurement form.

3-4 big handfuls of green beans-- the kind you buy from the market that need to be snapped.

About 5-6 large Idaho potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks.

A package of ham cubes available in the ham area of your grocer's fridge section-- I use Old Kentucky, the largest pack they have. It's about 2 cups of ham cubes.

Snap the beans into the size you prefer and put them in a large pot full of water. Boil them until they are bright green, then drain. Put the beans back in the pot and fill the pot up with as much broth as you'd like, I make my large stock pot about 3/4 full.

Bring to a boil and add a bay leaf, rosemary, and parsley as well as salt and pepper. Add 2 tablespoons of butter.

When it reaches a boil, add your peeled and cubed potatoes. Continue to simmer until potatoes are almost done but not all the way.

Add the ham cubes and simmer for about 10 minutes longer for the flavor to impart and the potatoes to finish. Don't leave it on too long or the pre-cooked ham cubes will toughen up.

This soup is DELICIOUS and even better the second day. I serve it with cornbread for a comfort-food type meal and my husband just loves this family favorite of mine. :)

I hope this works for you!

Awesome, I just had mine for lunch (without the meat) and it was so good the second day. :) I hope you post if it came out for you!

I make this every time we have ham (about 2x a year! lol). This is a very PA Dutch recipe! It is yummy and EASY!!

Wow, I guess ham and bean soup can be different. I soak one pound of dry navy beans overnight and throw them in the crockpot with a meaty ham bone. Add water to the top of the crock pot, lots of garlic powder/salt,salt and pepper, diced onions, some shredded carrots and cook all day on low. If I don't have a bone I buy either a slice or two of Cook's ham and ham hocks.
