Hi guys, my family is a bunch of halloweenies with myself as the self proclaimed "queen of halloween". Every year we do an annual Halloween bash. This year will be no exception, but it has to be extra special and spectacular. We are moving to Dallas in November and this party will be sort of a last hurrah and saying goodbye to friends and family. We plan to host trick or treaters and have our cute kiddie bash on Halloween night and then have the big blowout for the adults only on November 1. I need some great suggestions for food and treats, games, music and decor, of course I know we can use our old stanby's, but I want to really knock their sox off this year. :stir:

Thanks
Kim

I LOVE Halloween parties! Since my DD's birthday is on October 21, we always do a Halloween birthday party for her. We have the old tried and true games like Bobbing-for-apples and the Doughnut Hang.

I have a Halloween cookbook at home that has all sorts of great and fun recipes for appetizers, main courses, desserts, soups, beverages, etc. When I get home from work tonight, I'll post some of these recipes for you!

I'm assuming that since you're the "Queen of Halloween", you have some great Halloween party music. That's always my favorite part! Each year I seem to find more and more Halloween-themed CDs. We have the "kiddie" type CDs which includes songs like "The Monster Mash", "Ghostbusters", "The Addams Family", etc., etc. The "grown-up" CDs basically contain horror movie themes like "The Exorcist", "Halloween", "Poltergeist", "The Amityville Horror", etc., etc. I also always love to play the Peanuts theme music, "Linus and Lucy", in honor of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"

Well, I will post those recipes for you when I'm home and I'll do some searching for great ideas in the meantime. :)

The first recipe is for a sweet dip - one that you can serve with cookies (such as Ginger Snaps) and/or fresh, sliced fruit. The second recipe is for a savory dip that you can serve with pita chips, crackers, etc.

I think that using pumpkin as a main ingredient for a dip is pretty unique and it definitely "goes" with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Autumn.

The following is a recipe for "Brain Dip" (using a hollowed-out load of bread). I guess the dip is supposed to resemble brains. The suggestion (in the recipe) is for a kids party, but I think that the adults would get a kick out of it, too.

Another similar dip recipe called "Dip Head"

I think I'm going to pick up "The Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack this year so I can play the "This Is Halloween" song at my DD's party.

I always find my Halloween CDs at Walmart in their Halloween section.

This isn't music related, but another thing I do while DD's Halloween birthday party is going on is to put a DVD on (usually "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown") and I mute the volume. Since we have one of those ridiculous wide screen TVs, it kind of adds to the background decor.

OMGOSH I love halloween!!!!  I tried to hold my DD in till the 31st, but she wanted out on the 22nd. :rotfl2: . We had a huge 1st bday Halloween party for her. We did the trick or treat thing. I had about 6 different stops (so you will need as many helpers for this). The kids started at the back door to my house and 5 at a time walked through the house which we turned into a mini haunted house with ppl poping out at different points and blk lights and "fog" and spooky music playing :scared1: . Once they got through our haunted house they would start trick-or-treating. We had 6 ppl at different point of the frount yard going around the side and into the back again. Kids loved it, and it was much more fun than just handing them a goodie bag. Also we had the old costum contest, and a arts and crafts table full of fun Halloween theme craft, you can find a tone at Oriental trading. Lets see what else....:scratchin oh for games we did the pin the nose on the pumpkin, oh and the "what body part is this??" game useing fruit and raw veggies ( my DH is kinda a gross thinker so he had a ball with this:sad2: ) and the pinata of course. Good time had by all party: If I think of any more I'll let you know. I know if you google it many party ideas come up.

Hope this helps
:ccat:

This "game" always stands out in my mind. I remember doing it back in the early 80's at my babysitter's Halloween bash and it still comes back to me...

She had a huge box with holes in it where one can put their hand into it. She had various items in the box, that you would feel with your hand only and you had to guess what it was inside. UGH, I remember there was like something slimy and gross and it was a mashed up banana. It felt so gross. Then one box had candy corns in it, and one had a pumpkin. It was fun and kinda scary to put your hand blindly into something not knowing what would be in there! Have a great time.

Thanks so much for the replies. I have large and huge collection of halloween paraphenalia, but honestly I am so disappointed with the selection of halloween stuff at the local Walmart this year. I was planning on buying a new Airblown inflatable this year but they don't even have any. I keep telling myself that maybe they don't have everything out yet but I am not sure that is the case. The party on the 31st for the kiddos is going to be pretty tame, we'll probably take all the kiddos trick or treating ( our neighborhood is a two street culdesac) and then come back for some treats and games. My kids have requested bobbing for apples, and toliet-paper mummies, and I am thinking of putting together the haunted boxes again. The adult party is going to be an all-out gore fest. I need to find some really great gross recipes for them.

Fantasmic23- Thanks for the recipes!! If you are looking for some really really spooky Halloween music look for something called Midnight Syndicate. I will share with you my all time favorite Halloween adult and kid playlist.

Also, I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find a small coffin. I have had a little black cardboard coffin since 2002, it has always held little halloween prizes for kids, but this year it must have gotten moist in the attic and I think I am going to have to throw it out. Let me know if you have seen one.

Thanks and keep the ideas coming if you have them.

Kim

Articia13- Thanks for reminding me about oriental trading, looked at it again, there are literally TONS of stuff there that I need for my shindig. I had forgotten about pinatas, I found an eyeball one I liked, I am going to fill it with gummy worms, as a "trick" and then give the kiddies the real treats.

Thanks
Kim

HAHAH i was due on halloween and I came out on the 22nd too! My daughter mariska was due on halloween and i ended up having her on Nov12th!

I LOVE halloween. We are actually having a halloween party for my daughters first birthday. Here are some of the things I have done and/or planned. I think I actually posted some of them prior to this for a thread on a kids halloween party. Most i got from good old Martha LOL

For decoration

I made these glitter pumpkins. They were easy to make and gorgeous!
ml1004_1006_glitterpum_l.jpg

Use a medium-size paintbrush to spread a layer of white glue over the surface of a small pumpkin. Hold pumpkin over a paper plate or a sheet of newspaper to catch excess glitter. Sprinkle powder glitter over pumpkin in several colors covering completely. Let dry for about one hour; shake off excess glitter. Coat stem with brown acrylic paint; let dry. Pumpkins will keep for months.

I made a huge pumpkin snake for the front of the house.

This was really easy, although a bit pricey.. but it was soooooooooo worth it. Everyone ooo'd and awed over it. It last about a week, but we had an unusually warm oct last year.

I have a ton of other ideas, but I really did get most of them at martha stewart.com :) i wish I had the time to add them all!!! good luck and if i have time i'll post more!

I am also known as the Queen of Halloween! How funny! I also have an annual Halloween Bash every year. I do an all adult costume party and everyone brings a "snack" to share. The very best thing that I do at my annual party is I always plan a Halloween themed scavenger hunt. I make up a new one every year. Our circle of friends talks about it all year. I've already got friends asking me what I have planned for this year . . . but it's always a secret. I don't even tell my husband, that way he can participate in the game too. One year I made up "Monster Hunt." I have five named teams and I have five team captains and they had to take turns drawing names out of a hat to pick their team members. Then I gave each team captain an envelope which held the first clue. Each team then had to "find" five famous movie monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Werewolf, The Mummy and The Wicked Witch of the West. I had five envelopes hidden in different places around our immediate community and at each point in the game the teams would get another clue, until they had found all five "monsters" (which were actually just pictures of those five famouse movie monsters attached to each consecutive envelope). The first team back to my house with all five "monsters" got a prize. I bought little pumpkin trophies at the local trophy shop ($5.00 each) and gave each winning team member orange plastic jack-o-lanterns with a different classic Abbott & Costello Movie (you know, Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy, Abbott & Costello Meet Dracula, etc.). Last year I did a new game called Ghost Hunt, along the same premise, but the teams were sent to different spots in the community, where I had left "Ghosts" (stuffed and decorated sheets) and they had to get someone to take the entire team's picture with the Ghost. The first team back with pictures of their team with all five "Ghosts" were the winners. My theme this year is going to be A Sock Hop In Rock and Roll Heaven. My scavenger hunt teams will be seaching for dead rock stars! I'm working on it right now and I can't hardly wait - it may be the best one yet!

I could go on and on. If you want more info, just let me know. My Halloween party and scarenger hunt really is a big hit with our friends each year.

I am by far not the most crafty person but I do make this spider cake every year. Make 2 rounds of chocolate cake. Cut a whole out of the middle of one of the rounds about 5" in diameter. This will be the head. Put the hallowed out cake round on the platter and fill it in with cherry pie filling. Put the other full round ontop of the cherry filled one. Place the smaller round next to it. Ice with chocolate icing. Make little eyes out of M&M's or whatever you have. I use kit kats for the legs. It looks so gross when you cut into it but it tastes so good. I love chocolate and cherries! Here are two pics, one before cut and one after. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

We have a party every year to carve pumpkins. People get very creative. Maybe you could a table set up to carve and have a contest.

I don't know if you were planning to serve wine at your adult party, but Michaels has these cute Halloween wine bottle labels. I just bought a pack. You just stick them over the regular label. Here's a few wine names: Goblin Grog, Swamp Cider, Witches Brew by Gravehill Vineyard. So cute!

OOoo I'm not sure if you have them, but at my Dollar Tree I saw the wine labels too. They have them for both wine and 2 ltr bottles of soda. Much cheeper than Michaels but just as cute. I think the ones at Michaels are Martha Stewart so they are kinda pricey.

I'll have to check it out at my Dollar Tree. I'm sure the Michaels are more. I paid $6, I think, for 6 labels.

They really have lot's of stuff for Halloween there. I bought many of my party favor and treats at the Dollar tree. What can I say, I am a bargain shopper. :ssst:
