I am considering this date. I have some questions.
If you have gone in September, on a weeknight, how were the crowds?
Do we need to buy tix ahead of time?
Do they let you in a bit early like at Magic Kingdom?
I am assuming they sell alcohol...am I assuming correctly?
What is the best way to get there from Pop Century? By best I mean most efficient; assuming that would be a cab. If we stay until closing (which is what time?) will it be easy to catch one? How much roughly to go from wdw to US?

Light to moderate

No, you can buy them in the park the day you arrive.

Only people who are in the park when it closes can stay inside and get in before the regular crowd.

Yes you are

They will have a line of cabs waiting for people to depart at the end of HHN. There is a transportation FAQ at the top of this forum that has a link to a fare estimator. Hours vary from night to night but you will have plenty of notice before your chosen night as to what time it closes. They have extended hours on the fly before so the posted times aren't written in stone but if they change the cabbies will know about it.

The only dates in which HHN will be opened during September are for Opening Weekend (Friday September 24th and Saturday September 25th. If you plan on going both days, buy the Frequent Fear Pass which will allow you entry on both dates.
I always buy tickets ahead of time. If you are only planning to go for one night, you can go ahead and by the Stay and Scream ticket which is much cheaper (only if you are allready in the park during the day).
The only way of being let in early is if you have park tickets and are allready in the park during the day. If you are only purchasing HHN tickets, then you would have to be in line outside of the park and will be let in at about 6:30 pm.
Yes, they do. This event is not suitable for young children and there are alcoholic beverages sold throughout the park. It's good business for them. I usually spend about 80 bucks in booze myself.
From Pop Century, probably using Mears would be a good option.

I will be there opening weekend as well!

Sunday/Wednesday/Thursday are always less crowded than Friday/Saturday but not by much anymore. You will need to purchase a HHN ticket before you arrive at the park mainly to cut down on some of the lines. Lines start forming at 5pm so you wouldn't have to fool with the ticket line if you already had it in hand.

The only way to enter the park before HHN opens is to have day passes and are able to stay in the park between park closing and HHN opening. Otherwise...no...you will have to stay outside the main gates until 6:30pm.

Yes...alcohol is served...lots of it!

The best way to get there is to take a cab. You won't have to pay the parking charge of $14.00 and if you are going to drink some, you won't have to worry about drinking and driving.
