From what I have read so far, it seems that the Trick or Treat parties will be worth attending just to see the guests who are in costume. Do most dress as Disney characters or can we expect to see a lot of original creations?

I'm sure there will be a lot of Disney characters, but other costumes as well. A lot of groups/families dress up in theme. I know one group going this year as characters from Peter Pan, my family will either be the Princess Parade (with DS being Gus-Gus from Cinderella) or we will all do characters from Cinderella. Its up to my two oldest girls if they want to wear their Aurora and Ariel Costumes or something else. I may decide to be the Fairy Godmother pushing Cinderella and her mouse in their pumpkin carriage (aka my double stroller!).

Yeah, some people are awesome!

Some that I remember from the last two years:
-a family (maybe 5 or 6) as Beauty and the Beast characters, including the duster/maid, the armoire, and Mrs. Potts
- a group of near 7-10 dressed up as crayons. All had matching solid colored leggings and t shirts for their respective colors and a funnel type thing on their head, as well as the crayon logo on their pants
- Wall-E and Eve

I'm sure there are more but my brain's foggy right now (just got off a 12 hr shift). Hopefully my group will be one that people talk about this year... we have at least 9 adults going as Wizard of Oz characters, including the flying monkey :)
