DS 11 started middle school this yr., and now isn't sure if he even wants to dress up for Halloween (worried about being too old, and not "cool" I suspect). But I think he will change his mind later in the week, since we go to an event at the local college in the student center w/his best friend from another school, and if some friends are going trick-or-treating, etc. I was trying to come up w/some easy costume ideas we could throw together that might appeal to him. I was hoping some of you might have been through this and have some ideas that worked for your DS. He was a mad scientist last yr., and a vampire the yr. before. We have Darth V., and other SW, but he's not interested in that. Any help is appreciated!

I went as "Fancy Ketchup" a year or two ago. Take posterboard and decorate it like a ketchup packet and then dress "Fancy". I wore a top hat (lol, I just happen to have one of those) and some old glasses with a white button down shirt and a blazer.

Somewhere about that time frame - my DD went as a rubic's cube. Started with a square cardboard box, and then used electical tape to outline the squares, and then painted the colors with acrylic paint (the cheap bottles from Michaels).

Zombie. Face paint and old, tattered clothes. The worse they look, the better.

DD11 is going to be panda bear - wear black/white & throw on some ears. DS9 is spiking out his hair w/gel & using black/red hairspray. Then painting his face black & red. He has an old black robe from a previous year and we wrapped black & red electrical tape around an old sword that he strapped to his back w/a belt. I'm not exactly sure who he is "supposed" to be but he loves his costume.

I would just look around the house to get some ideas & let him have fun figuring it out.

DS(11) is in a wheelchair so our costumes are a bit different. But last year he went as a robot. Big cardboard box. Covered it with tin foil. Took some battery operated lights and poked holes in the front and placed them in rows so it looked like it was scanning or thinking. We also had a side access panel so we could help him drive his chair. :)

He may go as a trash dumpster this year. Box, paint it, glue/tape some trash around the top. :)

I went to a trunk or treating event last night and one of the tween boys came as "A bad day at the office" he had a dress shirt and tie wrinkled and blood covered and his hair all gelled every which way and white make-up on his face!

ds11 is going as something scary. He has bought an axe already (fake one). We'll probably get a Scream costume for him. Or we might buy him a scary mask. Not sure yet. We probably should head to the costume shop today.

I think it's all about being scary for the boys at this age. Please don't put some cute panda ears on your son!!! lol.

DS10 is going as a werewolf this year, just old torn up jeans, a flannel shirt, and a mask. That's all he wants.

The painted face post made me think of a crazy sports fan. If he has a sports jersey and such, he can dress the part with the team colors, maybe a sign and other accessories based on the team.

A couple of years ago, DS wasn't sure he wanted to dress up anymore, and I didn't want to spend time/$$ on a costume he might not end up wearing. So he wore plain black sweats and hoodie, and we attached glow sticks in the shape of a stick figure. Out in the dark it looked really cool, especially from a distance. If you google glow stick costume or glowman costume, you'll see lots of ideas, robots, etc. He got a lot of attention and was happy with it, because he wasn't technically "in a costume", which would not have been cool, I guess.

My oldest in the past have found cool accessories at Hot Topic -- ski mask with bloodied face, crazy animal hats. We usually buy them when on sale and then mix & match wearing all black or black robe. I have no idea exactly what he ever is, but it often works as something scary looking.

AC Moore near us had times to go in buy a $2.50 t shirt and then they would let you decorate with fake blood for free.

When my son "dressed up" in middle school, he was always an athlete - throw on a jersey (professional or a team he played on) & there you go. All his friends did the same thing.

My DS14 is somewhat of a class clown so for the past two years he has gone as a banana. My DS12 was a zombie last year, I'm not sure about this year. One of his friends is being "Waldo" (from Where's Waldo).

I remember that first year that DS did not think he wanted to dress up. I was pretty sure he may change his mind. I bought a gorilla mask, a little scary but not evil which we do not do, and knew he had a brown warm up suit that he could wear. When he did indeed (at the VERY last minute) decide he wanted to dress up I "found" the mask and suggested the warm up suit. That mask has been pulled out many time in the last 10 year as a "last minute idea"!

My DS10 also does not want to dress up, very embarassed! We're from LA so this year I said he could wear his Saints jersey and we'll put some black liner under his eyes. If your son does a martial art he can wear his uniform.

As some other posts, DS11 is going as Troy Polamalu from the Steelers, all I did is order the wig, which he will wear again to games, and he had the jersey and wearing sweat pants.

Last year, he went as a Penn State fan and bought him a blue/white wig, which he still wears to football and basketball games, so the past 2 years I have bought very cheap costumes that he can use again!

Last year my ds (then 10) was a soldier. This year he will be a zombie soldier. All we need to do was shred last year's costume, and spray on some red paint. Zombies and anything scary are what it's all about. For about five minutes he wasn't sure if he was going to go trick or treating or not - then we walked down the candy isle at the grocery store and he reconsidered. :lmao:

We just had our school Halloween dance last Friday. DS10 originally didn't want to dress up but then he realized most of his friends were dressing up. Pretty much EVERY kid in that age group was either, a) something scary, or b) some type of athlete, namely baseball or football players. The theme with the scary costumes seems to be the more gory, the better. My son ended up choosing the 'Scream' mask where you can pump fake blood through it. BIG hit!!!
