Halloween and Satan......

Once all these kids that are not allowed to celebrate certain holidays grow up they are going to be asking their parents why they were such fun suckers!

We used to live in Virginia, and in our town several families did not celebrate Halloween - we had to drive from house to house for trick or treating, that's how rare it was to find a house with the lights on!

And dd's school (she was in kindergarten then) did not mention the holiday at all.

So I was surprised when we moved to Texas and found that her public school here did talk about Halloween and do art projects, etc.

I understand why people might find some of the haunted houses, decorations, and costumes to be excessively morbid. I don't like those myself. But people who do like them aren't necessarily morbid either. I enjoy lots of crime shows on TV, and I don't think it's a symptom of some kind of inner fascination with murderers or anything.

I tell my children that some people don't celebrate Halloween, the same way some people don't celebrate Christmas. We've never had anyone tell us that the holiday was evil - I'm not sure how I'd address that.

LOL at the bolded part! My DH is sure I am singlehandedly responisble for all of the Law & Order spinoffs add Crossing Jordan, Cold Case Files and American Justice and you would think I was either planning the perfect crime or trying to solve one.

I like clowns as long as they talk. I hate any character that doesn't talk--mimes, clowns, you name it :rotfl: However, I still think they are a long way from devil worship. :rotfl:

Whenever a crime is reported on the news, dh turns to me and says "well Miss CSI, who did it?"

And I remind him not to get on my bad side because I do know how to make it look like just another burglary gone bad.

My birthday is the day before Halloween, and when growing up I always had a halloween birthday party. As I got older I realized that Halloween isn't exactly what I thought it was. Now that I am a mother, we do trick or treat, but I do not allow her to wear costumes I concider being demonic or having to do with witchcraft. We do Disney Princesses or cheerleaders, ect. She is perfectly happy with that. We only go to family and friends homes to trick or treat too. Being a Christian I feel that there are things in this world that have been down-played so much that it has been accepted as being normal.....and thus downplayed. For instance, teen pregnancy, homosexuality, divorce, cheating, ect. I am certainly not telling eveyone that what ever they do....they are going to Hell. In Jesus' eyes a sin is a sin....whether you take the Lords name in vain or murder. We are all sinners!

Now that I have said my peace about that.....I was told that the reason the dressing up got started was that on this night the demons walked the earth and would enter into those who were not weraing costumes.....It tricked them into thinking you were one of them. The trick part comes from pranks being played and the treat part comes from the goodies you recieved. I am not sure about all of this as being true. But, as I see more and more of the, what I would call demonic, costumes....the monsters and gouls and witches they have all around I just choose not to participate in that sort of thing.

As for Halloween parties go....I think that it is o.k., as long as it doesn't go into that extreme. My DD's school has taken the Halloween parties out of the school starting this year. They are focusing on the Christmas and Valentine's holidays. They have also opted to take all cookies, candy and sweets out of all classrooms as well. For parties, no sweets will be given. Snacks, no sweets. And in the past the teachers have PAID the students when they are rewarded with candy or sweets...no more! I think that it makes it a little difficult to give only fruit and veggies for these sorts of things....especially for Kindergarteners! And economically speaking it is easier to buy a box of little debbies, for instance, rather than spending more for fruit or veggies with the dips amd the cups and spoons to use them.

We are actually going to the MNSSHP this year, so NO I don't think that cutting it out completely is the anwer. I do however think that it needs to be toned down way more than it has become....and will continue to get worse I am afraid!

You can take it to either extreme...it is just up to your personal believes. :lovestruc

I don't that it's demons that supposedly walk the earth but it's the dead.

But either way, I always loved Halloween and the scarier the better even when I was very young. However I NEVER associated the holiday with Satan just like I know better than to associate witches with anything evil. Many of these images are false and should be taken only as fantasy items.

Now, my son has the same fascination with spooky things and I see nothing wrong with it. I'm teaching him the truth about the folklore and the portions that I consider reality. I don't want him to grow up superstitious which I frankly see a lot of on this thread.
