Has anyone done this recently? What would be the best routes to take, to avoid major cities and travel problems. Never done this before. Are there many places to get off the highway for ameal without straying too far from the main run?

Thanks

We drove from NS years ago. We took 95 down through Maine and into Mass. then took 495 out around Boston to 90 then to 84 to Scranton, Penn.; took 81 south through Penn, WVirg. and into Virginia; took 66 east across Virg and cut down on 17 about half way through there to Fredericksburg the 95 the rest of the way to Daytona and then 4 to Orlando.
You can take 95 south from Maine right to Daytona then 4 to Orlando. But we didn't want to go through NY, Baltimore/ Washington areas.

Take lots of time! We drove from Cape Breton last August and we really enjoyed it, but it takes a long time. We did stop often and visited some sites on the way down (Washington DC, shopping in Freeport, etc.) and we arrived by noon on the 5th day. We stayed at motels just off the I-95 which was really easy. We stayed on the I-95 the entire way down and we really didn't hit too many problems. In fact, the only time we were delayed due to traffic was in New York City and we expected that. On the way home, we did take some of the smaller highways around the major cities rather than going through them. We ordered a tripkit from CAA and bought a portable DVD player to make the time pass quickly for the kids (who are older teenagers). We were gone over three weeks (were at WDW for two weeks) and it was very relaxing with our own vehicle. We stopped at a rest stop in each state for pictures. There are lots of rest stops and welcome centers for a bathroom break, snack, or stretch. We didn't book any hotels before we left because we weren't sure where we would stop for the night. There was no problem finding good places to stay as long as you stop early enough. We always stopped by 6-7 p.m. but by 9 or 10 the places were filled.

It is an adventure but lots of fun! Ask any questions and I'll try to answer them!:goodvibes

I have used the 95/495/90/84/81/66/95 rte from here in NB one tip i can give is stay on our time for the trip down and back that way when you stop to eat the resteraunts wont be as bussy because you will be 1 hr ahead of the rush you will have a choice of what to eat at all most every exit with in sight of the highway and lots of clean rest areas for bathroom brakes if you are not allready a member join the CAA You can get trip ticks from them which give you turn by turn maps and directions and tour books which will tell you where resteraunts and hotels are along the way ( with a discount on most hotel rooms ) + their famous road side service if you break down

We just got back but only drove as far as Boston and flew from there (dirt cheap!!!) We really enjoyed the drive to Boston and will do it again for next year. We went via the Houlton route.

Hi Dennise,

How was your trip? Ours was terrific...we may be driving down or back in the near future as well, we've found a good deal on a sports car and of course Klaine wants to buy it so we may fly down and drive back or drive both ways because there is also a horse trailer I found sooo cheap as well...but it likely won't be til the fall. Let me know any tips you find!

HeatherA:

We had a very good trip, spent 3 days in Kissimmee at the Calypso Cay resort, 4 days in Treasure Island on the beach and the last 4 days on I-drive. Met with friends for part of the time. Did lots of shopping for the grand kids, ate at lots of good places. Had tickets, but didn't do parks this time. Just wanted to relax. We are thinking about driving next year. glad your trip was great.
