Halifax local willing to help visitors where I can...

I know it's not native to that part of Canada, but my DH would love to get some poutine! Is there anywhere near the pier that would meet his fry/cheese curd/gravy needs??

I'm not a foodie but my friends recommend either Willy's (http://www.willysfreshcut.ca) which is just a few blocks up the street or Smoke's Poutinerie which is right along the boardwalk close to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

I second the request! This is my must do snack whenever I visit Ontario.

Also, some good pub recommendations? I've heard the Old Triangle is good (someone I met in Ireland recommended it).

The Old Triangle would be my recommendation as well.

Thank you - we are on the only Canada cruise this year in 20 days! We plan to drive to Taylor Head Provincial Park. Any suggestions on a good spot to stop and get a lobster roll or other lobster on the drive back to port? (And thanks for the info on a wine store close to port - that might come in handy!)

I would recommend you wait until you return to downtown as there is not a lot out by that location. I responded the following about lobster rolls previously and would recommend it again:

When it comes to seafood there are many good places but McKelvie's is always a local favourite. They may be a little more pricey but it's said to be worth it. Full disclosure...I do not consume seafood but many of my family and friends do. McKelvie's is very close.

Posts like this just prove yet again how friendly people from Canada really are. I'm from Boston, and there is a sports radio host here that has often joked that Canadians are "too" nice haha.

My wife, my daughter, and I will be on the NY to Canada cruise in three weeks and can't wait to check out Halifax. I feel we may take a walk to the maritime museum and check out some shops. The city looks beautiful from what I've seen online.

Thank you for the nice compliments. The city is beautiful (rain go away!) but one word to the wise is it is hilly. Great walking town but of a challenge in spots due to incline.

Is there a grocery store nearby that would sell Kinder Eggs and other candy, like Cadbury? (Yes, I know you can't bring them into the US but you can open them on the ship and bring in the prizes and it's a silly law. Write your congressperson.)

Halifax is VERY busy when the ships are in town. I work downtown and you can always tell there is one in town even before you see the ship. Peggy's Cove is always a crowd pleaser and I would give yourself time to walk the boardwalk and visit the shops along the way. Citadel hill is a nice historic experience if that's your thing. Your driver will know some great places as well. Have a great day!

You will find a large selection of candy both new and old. You can also find kinder eggs and typical chocolate at any drug store. There are a few on Spring Garden Road (Shoppers and Lawtons) as well as a Lawtons on Barrington Street.

Your ship also docks VERY close to a Super Store which is a large grocery store. They will likely have what you are after too.

Thanks for the suggestions! We never got a chance to have lobster roll, but did get some poutine. Went to Superstore after we dropped off the car and got beer and a ton of candy! Picked up the big Halloween boxes right inside the door. I'm set for a month. Here's a sample of my haul. Not shown are the Kinder Eggs. (opened them before disembarking) and the Fruit and Nut Bar I ate already.

Just got back from the cruise and we loved Halifax. Such a beautiful city! My wife and I were saying how nice it would be to live in one of those newer condos by the water.

Also wanted to chime in and say that we just disembarked today and Halifax was our (for me and my mom) favorite port. We went out to Peggy's Cove which I *highly* recommend and did the Titanic grave site and also explored the city and harbor walk area in the morning. We were blessed with great weather this cruise and loved it. I hope to return with my DH and DS one day!

By the way, for others following, the fall foliage was actually a little behind this year and had not peaked yet. On our drive out to Peggy's Cove at the higher elevations we definitely started to see more fall foliage which made the drive so beautiful.

Any one visiting is in for a treat
