Halftime Show

Not to mention your comfort level changes over time. When the oft cited MJ halftime show occurred I was 9. I'm sure I didn't watch it and wouldn't have cared what he did if I had. But now I'm an adult with 3 kids, two of whom are girls that are starting to form a picture of who they are and what their moral code is. For that reason alone I can have found MJ's performance acceptable at the time while Taki g umbrage at Jlo's nearly 30 years later without being sexist.

No, not really. You can say you didn't see the issue with it at that age but to find his acceptable and hers not on the basis of the "crotch grab" or lack there of would definitely be sexist.

Even though you were 9 at the time, with many videos of the performance on YouTube and it always popping up on FB around super bowl time, I am sure you have seen it since then. Very easy to compare the two. But one would really need to think about why they find one ok and the other not (if that is how they feel).

See I have 3 kids too. I have a 21 year old daughter so have been there when watching stuff with her. The ONLY performance I have ever taken exception to was Robin and Miley. That one crossed a line. But, we had a short and sweet talk about why it was bad and why it crossed a line especially when compared to an actual dancers routine. But we didn't lay all of it at Miley's door. Robin is a grown man, wasn't like he didn't know what was happening.

I make darn sure my dd has learned that there are things that are inappropriate out there. But if they are inappropriate for one they are for everyone. There is no double standard. There is no "its ok for guys but not for ladies" bs.

The point is, the halftime show didn't make a sharp U-turn from Carol Channing to J Lo. The SB halftime show has a long history of outrageous performances. This year just continued an already established trend.

For what it's worth, I didn't care for the choreography while she was in the black outfit. But I wouldn't call her performance "inappropriate for a halftime show".

Good lord you're being obtuse. I specifically said found it acceptable at the time and not now. You're intentionally trying to find things to argue with and ignoring what you can't take issue with.

For your information no, I haven't seen MJ's show because I am not a MJ fan in any way and do not like to watch him grabbing his junk either and I know that's a thing he frequently did. And as far as Robin and Miley at the VMA's no, I haven't seen that either because all it took was one still shot to tell me I did not need to see a middle aged man grinding against a girl barely out of her teens. And THAT's how I saw that so feel free to refrain from calling me sexist because you only choose to read a fraction of what I post.

Totally. And I don't think you've said you found what occurred for MJ's performance acceptable at that time because he was a male and you found JLO's performance unacceptable today because she is a female. If you did I missed it. You may have your own viewpoint on code of conduct or moral code but that doesn't necessarily mean you find no issues with male performers on the basis of their gender and yet find issues with female performers on the basis of their gender.

Nope. I said I might not have had a problem with the move then but I do now, regardless of gender.

I also said way up thread that I thought both women looked and sounded great I just could have done without a few of the moves both women did. Some posters like to read things into statements that aren't there.

I don't think anyone has said the opposite is true but there would be no point to this thread at all discussing this year's half time show if people weren't able to you know discuss this year's half time show..the positives, the negatives and all the inbetweens.

Not one single person has made any comments about J Balvin grabbing his crotch while performing with J Lo. And he did, several times.

The guest music star who performed with J Lo during the halftime show.

Was he the Tin Man looking guy in the shiny sparkly silver outfit?

Regardless of the gender of whoever it was doing crotch grabbing, I don't think it belongs on a Super Bowl half time show. I never watched any half time shows with Michael Jackson in it, but I saw plenty of other MJ performances on TV in which he was doing that and it was gross and unnecessary.

Oh...and that TV performance between Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke? That was a total turn off. But I don't have high opinions of either of those performers. I don't have any nice things to say about either of them.

I'll be honest I didn't notice the first time around because it wasn't as "in your face" so to speak and I wasn't watching because I had no idea who it was but yeah, now that I reached that part and looked for it...... ew. And double ew to the grinding and spanking.

Maybe I should just watch classical concerts from now on. I'm clearly not with it enough to enjoy pop music performances.

Your comment doesn't have anything to do with your prior comment nor pertains to my response to yours.

You're absolutely free to discuss your above comment, though quoting me I'm not sure why, it however isn't the same as saying essentially the years of the past are just as scandalous as this years which is what your prior comment was.

I was commenting on this year's show.

Do you watch The Masked Singer? They often throw shade at Robin Thicke, he's definitely knowledgeable in the music world like he can pick up people's style of singing, their pitch and range, but yeah as a person he's left enough out there for people to pick apart.

:magnify:

I actually do wear glasses. I have a so so television. Maybe Summer2018 is right. Maybe that's why I didn't see what was underneath. I don't know, and I don't care. I mean seriously?! Why am I wasting time replying to this nonsensical thread? I don't know. I literally could stick a fork in my eye right now.

Guys, I wasn't looking that closely. Good Lord Louise! I was watching her dance. I wasn't examining her costume. I assumed that her costume was made of pantyhose type material with the silver stuff attached. What I didn't see was the nude shapewear or underwear or leotard or whatever you costume experts call it. I legit thought there was nothing underneath besides her privates and skin...hand to God.

Feel free to continue to comment about my comments. I've got better things to do.
I had NO idea you'd responded to this thread or thought about a poster on this site having the same moniker! You sound awfully peeved with me and not my intention at ALL.

Thought the reference was to a political activist/commentator of the same name who probably wrote about her take on the show somewhere:

Puhleese don't stick a fork in your eye; sounds painful and not a way to get better vision. 😚

It just shows a pattern of men getting a pass and women getting sl.. shamed for the same behavior.

No Michael Jackson got heat for it...I specifically remember even Oprah Winfrey asking him about it an interview, about why he has to grab his crotch. So, it's not just because someone is male or female, its because its really over the top (for a family performance that is...in a club, in your bedroom, whatever - go to town)

However, it does show that in this thread men are "invisible" when they do it.
