Halftime Show

It was entertaining, but definitely not my favorite halftime (Bruno still wins for me). I will say though, it definitely beat the last two years. (Maroon 5 and Justin Timberlake -- and I really like both of them, but their halftimes stunk.)

Wasn't crazy about the pole, or when J Lo first came out she kept grabbing at her private area. But then I thought well, that strip of dark fabric is mighty thin, she may just be doing that to make sure she didn't have a wardrobe malfunction.

Her daughter did a fabulous job! 11 years old, getting out on that huge stage and killed it! Way to go, kid! :-)

Those who know me know in no way could I ever be accused of being a feminist or a prude, however it ( finally) dawned on me at age 60 as I was watching the 3-4 minutes of Jennifer Lopez that I could stand, how different our standards and expectations of performing are for men and women in our culture. Men can basically stand there and sing and we appreciate their talent. If they are known for their dancing ability, they do it with their clothes on. Women, on the other hand, must wear cat suits with as much skin showing as possible, mount stripper poles and generally behave as hoochie mamas in Go Go bars. Bottom line is a man can get by on his talent alone. A woman must also rely on her looks and sexuality. Now I know to an extent it’s always been this way- a woman’s face and body have always played more of a part in her career than in a man’s career (with a few exceptions of course). Any thoughts from you guys or am I just blowing smoke?

Dude, I'm not touching that one with a 10-foot dancer's pole...

Being from South Florida, that is Miami music to a tee, maybe not for an older crowd though.
I enjoyed it, very high energy.
Shakira and JLo looked amazing!!!
Loved Emme, so cute, she has a great future ahead of her.
Jennifers hair was amazing, loved the color, not sure it was all hers though.

I don’t think that’s necessarily true.

But it was a halftime show with Jennifer and Shakira.
Shaking their booty is part of their show. It’s what they do.
It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I wouldn’t have expected anything different from them.

I loved it. Other than the time delay with Shakira's lip sync these women look great and can dance. Also the stripper pole this was just jlo showing off since her hustlers movie didn't do very good.

I would kill to look like they do and I'm not even close to 50. The dancing might have seemed "sexual" but that's just today's world. Swing dancing used to me sexual too. So we all just need to hold on for the ride.

I liked jlo more but she was playing sings from my childhood so it was awesome. Also she wasn't singing over her cd tracks like Shakira.

While you definetely have a point in general, Shakira and JLo both trained as dancers. Nobody expects Adam Levine to dance while he's singing, it's not just part of this repertoire, but everybody would have expected Michael Jackson to dance during his halftime show. Just like nobody would expect Adele or Amy Winehouse (RIP) to dance.

I was curious what everyone thought because I honestly found it hard to watch with kids. My teenage niece got up and walked out of the room, she was embarrassed to watch it and my not quite teenage sons were super uncomfortable and didn't watch. It's interesting to read everyone's take on it.

I thought J Lo's costumes were had way too much skin showing. Not thrilled with all the butt shaking either, but I know that is their thing. We pretty much ignored it.

Maybe next year we can have some mostly naked men up there for the women to enjoy. J/K

What a crock of nonsense. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone forced those two to use a stripper pole and behave as a hoochie mama. They chose to do that as part of their act. I'm willing to bet there are plenty of female performers who wouldn't do that. From my memory, and again I could be mistaken because I didn't pay that close attention (the half time show rarely interests me that much), Katy Perry did the show a few years ago. I don't recall her acting like that...correctly me if I'm wrong. If a male chose to show off a 6 pack ab and muscles and dance all over, he certainly could. Plenty of male performers out there who make lots of sexual gestures, either in their act or their music. A woman doesn't have to rely on her looks and sexuality, that statement is baloney. The performers last night simply made a conscious decision to do so. If they had chosen Adele to perform, I'm going to guess she wouldn't have wrapped herself around a pole.

I watched it, didn't like it, and made me think are halftime shows to be themed for the region the game is in?

So next year the Super Bowl is in Tampa. What type of halftime show would be appropriate and represent the community?

I thought that Shakira did a fantastic job. She was high energy with lots of dancing. She looks like she's aging in reverse. Loved it.

JLo...could have done without the stripper pole and thong. She's got a great body, but I don;t care to stare at other peoples butt cheeks. Was waiting for threads to pop and it to fly off. :scared: Aside from the stripper pole I wasn't impressed with her dancing or physical activity. Felt she relied more on backup dancers.

Honestly, I was embarrassed and stopped watching. Maybe I just don't have much experience with concerts, but after all the talk I heard about empowering women, they couldn't sing without making it all about...well, something not DIS appropriate??
I don't understand this. They are talented women. They went out there and did their thing. Isn't that in itself empowering?

The most disappointing thing to me....no Pitbull!

I thought it was OK. I've always liked Shakira and JLo is holding up well. These ladies did their normal thing though and doing what someone wants to do is empowering.

I was really hoping, with the whole Miami vibe, that Gloria Estefan would make an appearance!
I enjoyed the songs last night, but the pole was a step too far for me. Both women are naturally sexy, and their dance skills are amazing, it just didn't seem necessary (although some of the guys watched with would very much disagree 😝)
