Halftime Show

Honestly, I was embarrassed and stopped watching. Maybe I just don't have much experience with concerts, but after all the talk I heard about empowering women, they couldn't sing without making it all about...well, something not DIS appropriate??

I was curious what everyone thought because I honestly found it hard to watch with kids. My teenage niece got up and walked out of the room, she was embarrassed to watch it and my not quite teenage sons were super uncomfortable and didn't watch. It's interesting to read everyone's take on it.

Did you feel the same way when Adam Levine took his shirt off last year? If not, the problem wasn’t the performances...

So would I

I have a difficult time telling if something is lip synced. But many are saying Shakira definitely did it and perhaps J-Lo too.
I saw a picture showing shakira’s mic was turned off. I’m not sure if it was real or photo shopped though. I’d much rather watch a band or singer stand still and actually sing than what happened last night. If I wanted to watch a music video I would go on YouTube.

I don’t remember whether I watched last year’s show or was driving home between the first half of the game and the second.

From the pics here, I can at least say I would not have been swooning last year and complaining this year, as I’m not fond of large tattoos in the first place.

But I consider the actions a bigger problem than the amount of skin showing anyway. If Adam was also grabbing his crotch and dancing around a pole, I would have been just as bothered as I was this year.

If you know who Shakira or Jlo is you also know they are always showing off their incredible bodies. Women empowerment is not about women covering up or not dancing sexy. Women empowerment is about women doing whatever they want to do at whatever age they want to do with out society or especially other women judging or telling us its wrong or shaming them.

Women can do whatever they want, I don't want to watch it with my kids. And I hope my kids don't feel empowered slapping women's behinds while dancing. It's not the message I want my sons to have.

If you bothered to read anything else I posted, my issue wasn't with their clothes or necessarily with the show. My issue was that my kids don't typically watch the type of show this show was, and I certainly don't try to watch that with them.

Maybe next year we can have some mostly naked men up there for the women to enjoy. J/K
Just kidding? Ha, who are you kidding. I'd probably win if I put my money on you couldn't wait to see Magic Mike.

"We" don't sexualize women. Lopez and Shakira and all the other female performers sexualize themselves. It's really silly when you look at who buys their stuff, women. They sexualize themselves and their performances and it's the women who want to see them. Men are just stuck because we take our women to see them. For the most part we couldn't care less about these performers. I don't know a single man who've gone out and purchases a song by JLo or watched one of her movies on their own rather than because their other wanted it or wanted to see it.

Stripper pole stripper pole stripper pole. It's all I've read about so far with the sexualization. No mention of Shakira wrapping a very thick bondage rope around her and around her wrists. So far not a single note on her bondage rope in this thread. Only the stripper pole triggered y'all.

And I'd bet everyone here on this thread probably has a post years ago raving on the thread of Magic Mike or 50 Shades of Grey. Just like in a local town, a bar was having Girls Gone Wild there. Massive amount of women protesting outside of the bar. Same women who were fighting in line 6 hours prior to get into Magic Mike to see Tatum with his shirt off in a skimpy speedo. Yup, understandable how women are up in arms about sexualization. No problem with Channing Tatum and Matt Mcconaughey wiggling around 95% naked though.

Double standards? Yup, every second of the day with society.

I'm not into crotch grabbing but see pole dancing as an art form and serious workout. About a decade back, I belonged to a gym that offered classes in it and yes, it's very body empowering. Most of the time I felt like a kid scampering around the monkey bars. Really defines your muscles as well.

I noticed the rope. I felt it wasn't very prominent, done and over with but I can understand being uncomfortable if one was at the motions of it. I think the thing with the stripper pole is it was a very large part of the routine and for a while of time that it's probably why it's getting more people talking.

FWIW I don't find your comparision analogous. I think when people talk about sexualizing women it's not necessarily a lack of clothing, though that can be part of it. It's much more into the whole thing--how we're looked at sometimes, how we're valued at sometimes, how we're perceived our roles are supposed to be sometimes, and many more things. Sure some women do sexualize themselves but there def. can be a case many-a times is it the chicken or the egg example.

And no need to stereotype people into a category of Magic Mike or 50 shades lol.

I also saw plenty of FB posts from men wishing there would be a wardrobe malfuction so sure maybe you can make the case that men are dragged out to see performances by the women in the lives..or you can make the case that men also are hoping something else happens while they are on stage who knows..that of course would be stereotyping men in how they view women.

And you don't have to watch with your kids if it makes you uncomfortable. Just change the channel. I'm sure most kids see more skin when they are at the beach anyways. It is meant to be big and extra. Mostly everyone knows who J lo is and i almost never see a pic of her with much clothes on so i knew that she would most likely be almost naked up there. This was a show, a performance and they dressed for it.

And please do not take my comment about empowerment and make it into something else. I was most definitely proud and empowered that two Latin artist and two women at that were up there.

No, that bothered me too, but I was uncomfortable specifically mentioning it on here.

I've not seen nor read either one.

What you like is a singer. Shakira and JLo are entertainers. Nothing wrong with preferring one over the other but there is a difference.

Personally, I prefer an entertainer. I can turn the radio on and hear them just sing. Just a difference in preference.

Yeah come on guys, this is what they do. Shakira at 43 is just beautiful and such an incredible dancer, and J Lo is gorgeous at 50 years old, and even tho personally J Lo could have toned down her outfit and looked even better IMO, I loved seeing more "middle aged" women being appreciated for their talent and beauty. It was what you would expect from them and good for them!

I agree (I'm a NYC girl too). If my gym offered a pole dancing workout, I would be first to sign up and pay. I use to do the Hot Yoga Barr, which was great for defining the muscles but the pole dancing would be a fabulous workout (and I'm in my 50s too).

I loved it- not even upset about the lip syncing because well, I think it would be hard to actually sing when you were giving such a high energy dance performance.
Not sure if anyone here has been to the beach lately, or watched figure skating on tv or gymnastics but I think the costumes last night were pretty similar.
Nobody was stripping, therefore that was not a stripper pole. It was a pole, and she did some gymnastic like dance moves on it.
The way Shakira held that rope I said to myself... "Thank you Lord for having Shakira use that rope and not a real snake." That is a pretty thick rope to tie into knots. Just sayin

It was the best half time show since Prince. I think Shakira could have carried it alone, but whatever.
