Halftime Show

That was a good game to watch. I did enjoy the half-time show. I thought both women did a great job, and enjoyed the entertainment. I didn't notice if anyone was lip syncing because I was enjoying the show so much. I don't want to hear out-of-breath performances because they're dancing all over the place. Loved Shakira's dancing and hip shaking. It reminded me of how much my dad used to enjoy watching her dance on the Spanish language tv shows (he passed away in '05). I also enjoyed J-Lo's performance, didn't notice the cages, and when she came out in the white(?) outfit wondered how I missed her changing her clothes. Some half-time shows will focus on the singing, and some will focus on the dancing. I'm glad for the variety.

Having said that, even though I was by myself, I did not like the lewd (as said earlier in the thread) suggestiveness that J-Lo exhibited. Her clothes, black outfit, had such a focus in that region that I had a flashback to the Basic Instinct movie with Sharon Stone & Michael Douglas. I personally did not think that the Superbowl Halftime show was the right venue for that or for her hand going down towards her crotch area. It was distracting to me from the performance itself. If she hadn't done that I wouldn't have thought anything about the pole dancing because she showed some skills there, and it was good.

What was up with commercials? They all were kinda blah. Best one was the Jason Mamoa Rocket Mortgage commercial.
I must’ve missed that one. My favorites were John Krasinski and the other Bostonians on parking the car, and Bill Murray reprising Groundhog Day. :hyper:
I enjoyed the commercials. I liked that one, especially, where the little boy actually ran on the football field before the game. I laughed at Jason Mamoa - good sport.

Be careful what you wish for

.I don't remember any complaining about half-naked Adam Levine last year.
Ewww. No, I don't appreciate the guys doing this either. Not the venue for it.

I'm seeing a lot of folks completely missing the messages of the show. The dancing was extremely culturally relevant for the Latinx/Hispanic population, and also included Middle Eastern and African dance. Certain things within the show were meant to be social/political commentary, and as an artist and dancer I thought they were well executed. Did I love every minute of it? No, nothing is perfect. But I looked at it as a whole picture and message and think it was extremely well done and entertaining to boot.
Agree with you for the most part. I thought they did a great job except for what I noted above.

I was going to mention the same thing about Madonna - I grew up with Madonna and then was a teenager (16) when Britney hit the scene - what I saw last night was incredibly tame. I didn't think twice about it until I read other opinions.

Same.

I‘ve been like, “DId I watch the same show as some of these people?”

I don't understand this. They are talented women. They went out there and did their thing. Isn't that in itself empowering?

The most disappointing thing to me....no Pitbull!
Great performances. IMO

I was also very disappointed...no Mr. 305. What was up with that?

Wow, lots of prudes here, huh? The dancing was very on brand for 2 women with the cultural and ethnic backgrounds they have. A LOT of the dancing was very traditional moves. As for the pole...have none of you ever seen a Cirque du Soleil show? Those are like 75% pole acrobatics. It is an extremely difficult feat to pull off and didn't think J Lo was doing ANYTHING sexy on the pole. She was simply showing off her skills in that area, cause she worked hard to learn it.

I can't believe anyone was offended by this show, yet has no issue with the cheerleaders on the sidelines literally doing nothing except jumping around in skimpy clothes, shaking what they've got, and wearing so much makeup they look like clowns.

I enjoyed the show, I think it's the best one in a while. I'm not a dancer but found myself moving a bit in my seat to the music. I thought Shakira was great start to finish. I thought J-Lo did a great job dancing but not sure the vocals really came through the music. Disappointed in the guys they had ... who were they and how sad were their voices .... WHY WASN'T PITBULL there between the two of them! He's even from Miami. But it was non-stop, transitioned well, dancers awesome, kids were great, full of energy and never a lull.

We hosted last year in Atlanta and it was quite sad that our show didn't represent our city nor all the incredible talent that calls it home. It could have been anywhere. Miami put on a show that represented the Miami vibe and community. The got it and they pulled it off.

I thought their attire was just fine. Shakira was more covered up than most cheerleaders from minis to college. J-Lo had on a body suit, that wasn't her skin for the most part. She was more covered up than just about every school age dancer, cheerleader, drill team or teen at the pool. If your child participates in these activities, wears a bikini or cute summer clothes ... they likely show much more skin.

The pole dance ..... does anyone go to the circus or Cirque du Soleil? Lots of dancing on poles, both straight ones and round ones. Google image it and you'll see that what she was doing was no different than many families have gone to watch for years and years. The "showing of the crotch" areas? Cheerleaders, gymnasts, dancers all do it ............. why is that different?

Two beautiful women that many their same age would love to be shaped like. Both can dance and sing and entertain and they did just that.

Didn't see your post before I posted mine. YES!

I’m generally conservative, but I liked the performance. And I appreciated how they didn’t try to politicize the performance.

It was about what I would expect from both Shakira & J-Lo - I wasn’t surprised at all.

Shakira literally has a song called “These Hips Don’t Lie,” & has everyone forgotten J-Lo‘s iconic green dress?

Both have Latin roots & were celebrating their Latin culture w/ fun, sexy, upbeat “club” type music.

They were in Miami. It was the Super Bowl. I don’t expect the halftime performances to be tame. It’s one of the reasons why when my husband & I were youth group leaders we turned the TV off during the halftime performance during our youth group Super Bowl parties.

Maybe I’ve watched too much Dancing w/ the Stars, but Latin music IS sexy & suggestive. The costumes are risqué.

I didn’t see it as a “stripper pole” - it was just a pole. She wasn’t stripping. There are classes all over that teach pole dancing.

I liked how J-Lo’s daughter sang w/ her & how the different girl groups came out to perform at the end.

I thought they both did great!

And I didn’t find the performance demeaning to women. Did anyone find Adam Levine’s performance demeaning to men when he ripped his shirt off?

My daughter who is a budding feminist said, “Demeaning to women? Shakira & J-Lo choreographed it THEMSELVES. They can dance however they want to.”

If I looked as good as J-Lo, I’d be buying my groceries in a bikini.
If you missed the blatant political overtones, the entire performance went over your head.

I havent read any of the over 200 replies, so I imagine its a hot topic.

I loved it, and I think its great in today's world women of a certain age are sex symbols still, and a i know a lot of good people feel it went to far, maybe so, I liked it, The half time shows are always edgy, and next years show will be too, so if it really bothers you make other plans for halftime

Have you seen Zumanity?

Sure there's pole acrobatics done there but with a much different tone and vibe than say KA or Mystere for instance. Now I'm not saying JLO's performance was on Zumanity's level at all (because it wasn't quite that sexual like Zumanity is) but I don't think your comparison rings true (my opinion no disrespect meant). Cirque has a very risque show with pole acrobatics and Cirque has much more tame/family friendly shows with pole acrobatics.

I agree!

Pole dancing has been recognized by the Global Association of International Sports Federation. There is actually a push for it to become an Olympic sport. Maybe it's time to realize that we need to get over some stereotypes.

How many times did Michael Jackson grab his crotch in his halftime performance?

As I said earlier in the thread, the cheerleaders wear less than J Lo and Shakira did last night. Do those of you who were offended by the halftime show feel the same way about the cheerleaders and their dances? Offended by the crotch shots? Don't blame the performers, blame the camera crew.

:rotfl2: an Olympic sport. That's a good one.
I will say, there is a difference between “pole dancing” in a club and “pole fitness” as an exercise/art. It takes incredible strength to do many of the tricks... And no I’m not referring to simply grinding, climbing, and sliding down.

Offended by the crotch shots? Don't blame the performers, blame the camera crew.
You can't blame the camera crew when the performer slides towards the camera with her crotch thrusted out to the camera, or when the performer turns, bends over, and thrusts her rear end into the camera. Nor can you blame the camera crew when it's all choreographed and it's your job to follow the choreography. Pretty sure the camera crew isn't filming impromptu and thinking, "I'm gonna get a shot of her crotch, maybe they'll use that..."

I saw a movie from the 1920s recently and the opening scene has Joan Crawford dancing the Charleston into her underpants ("Our Dancing Daughters").

Well, I think it’s time we have some guys up their dancing like they do and wearing similar outfits.....

empowerment indeed.

Not sure what your age is but you might have missed the "moment": Chippendales, home of drunken women at bachelor parties and birthdays. Very enlightening watching women act "monkey see, monkey do":;).

They’re still dancing, at a theater near me this month.
