Hakuna Matata - Running with the Reindeer!!!

Happy Friday Team!

Another quick post today.

Beth, Congrats on the weightloss & have a great race.

Vicky, I'm still undecided about Epic Mickey. I bought DD Kirby's Epic Yarn, Cooking Mama & UDraw.

Don't think I will get back to back runs in this weekend. Going to spin class tonight & run tomorrow. Sunday will be a game time decision based on the snow.

Sorry for the fly-by
:wave2: to all.
Have a great weekend everyone.........Sue

We are going to do a race at DisneyWorld, the place where magic is real. We must believe that our training and our fitness is going to do the job and carry us through. We just need to trust the magic and believe. When we believe something is possible then we have half the challenge won, if we doubt ourselves we are going to be going up more hill than necessary.

I challenge each of you to believe, like a warrior going into battle you must believe that you are magic and nothing can stand in your way. You have trained and it will be enough, don't doubt, just believe and you will finish. If the going gets rough then cling to that thought, "I believe".

Thanks Dave!!!

I'm going to remember that mantra next Sunday too when I'm doing my first 15K (and longest run to that point) - which puts me on Cat Hill (one of the major ones in Central Park) TWICE...and the second time in Mile 8. OY!

I BELIEVE!!!!!!

And here's my race report! :)

It should really be no surprise that I was mega-excited about the "jingle bells for your shoes" part of the description of what your entry fee got you. After all, when I was just a little thing (like 12-18 months or so), I had to wear a corrective shoe for a while - which was basically a right shoe on my left foot (or left on my right? I always forget which foot turned out too far.). So to help my mom tell the difference and make sure the correct shoe was on the correct foot, my doctor helpfully attached bells to the corrective shoe. Well, that lasted until we got home at which point my mom called my dad and asked him to please get some colored laces on his way home so THAT could be the differentiating factor. Apparently I spent the entire ride home bouncing my foot up and down to hear the bells. Hee!

At any rate, this was a 4 mile run in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. I've gone here on my own for training runs before and did my Turkey Trot in this park, so I'm not unfamiliar with the roads there. BIG advantage was it's in my borough and on my subway line, so I didn't have to get up as early as before. Woo!

For this run I was given a pink bib rather than the further back purple. Definitely a feature of there being fewer people who signed up and the title "jog" attracting more people so that the corrals were a bit redistributed. I'm sure I'll be back in my purple corral next week, never fear. Got lined up, barely heard the national anthem as the girl was either very soft or held the mic very far from her mouth, and we were off.

We started about mid-way into the park on the road that cuts across its middle. I knew the very first part and very last part were the same path, just in reverse, and it did occur to me that coming back wasn't going to be fun since we started out downhill. More on that later.

The big advantage of this starting point was I didn't realize we were basically on "the Beast" as soon as we came down the start/finish bit. For those unfamiliar with my terminology, "the Beast" is the primary hill in Prospect Park if you go to the right (we won't even go into the almost constant hill you're climbing if you go to the left), and it is brutal. It's one of those that is seemingly benignly gradual, but it's lethal in its length. Then there's a little bit of "Good I'm done" but nope...a slightly steeper climb awaits you before you're "done" and can go down for a little while. The good thing about not realizing that's where I was until I was most of the way up it is that I was able to run most of it. The bad thing about that is I wasn't really pacing myself for the hill and so I did pay for it with my legs a little later in the run. Still, I felt good about starting so strong.

I continued around the loop of the park with little to note, good or bad. I did go to a 3:30/1:30 run/walk ratio today. My legs have been very fatigued all week (girl stuff - UGH!), and the 4:1 just hasn't been feeling great, so I opted to split the difference so to speak. This ratio seemed to work well.

Overall I felt like I was able to keep up a pretty steady pace, and my garmin data bears that out. The run section that was all downhill has a pace of 10 and change minute mile, the times that I did walk towards the end has a 12 and change minute mile, and most of the other run segments were in the 11 and change minute mile range.

Per the NYRR data, my overall average was 11:56 and my chip time was 47:45.

I'll take it! Given how my legs felt all week, I just wanted to finish in less time than I did the 5 miles, and I did that by almost 11 minutes, so woo! Like I said, pretty much a consistent pace!

All in all it was a good time. And yes, I'll probably do it again next year! :)

Good Morning Everyone!

Margie: It's really fun! I just enjoy the magic aspect of it. Everyone can have professions that they do (like making clothes or jewelry) so I have a blast with those too! I'm such a girl!

Lynn: We got more snow again last night! Not enough for a snow day though. I'm hoping to start getting back into working out and going to the gym again this week. I've taken a little over a week break and I feel icky about it.

AFM: I'm still deciding if I should commit to the race or not. The bf's no help in deciding this so I need to just sit down and say yes, I'm doing this or no, I'm not.

Just a quick fly-by!

Went to see Tangled over the weekend. Great movie. Wonderful in 3-D.

Everyone who wanted a medal. Please send your $5. I am expecting to recieve the medals this week. I want to get them out to you ASAP! Thanks!

Gotta start making cookies and closing out the account books and...man, :surfweb: the end of the year is sure busy!

See ya - Connie

Good Morning Team!

Saylan – One good thing about scheduled races is that they force you to keep up with training, it is much easier to skip training if you do not have anything planned!

Connie – PM me your mailing address and I will get you Scott and my money in to you.

Margie – Projects almost complete, finished the needlepoint, need to get it blocked then make it into a pillow, last afghan just needs final row of trim – maybe an hours worth of work. Then I need to put together the Christmas baskets the familys are all getting this year. My plan is to have everything done by the end of the week (except for maybe the pillow), so that they can be shipped out Friday or Monday.

Beth – Great race report!

AFM – Did not get much in the way of exercise this weekend, yesterday, did get out for short dog walk in 30mph wind (but it was not cold), and 40 min on the bike. Warm and windy again today.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Good Morning Team!

Wow is that cold today! We had a variety of weather this weekend.
Sat. was very mild. I was way over dressed for my run & didn't even need gloves. On Sun. we had pouring rain/ freezing rain/ very wet snow/ snow & then the temps. dropped about 30 degrees.

Margie, No clue what my bib#s are. Some people were able to find out before they pulled them due to "errors".

Beth, Congrats on another great race!

How is everyone's Christmas shopping going?
All the gifts I've bought are wrapped but I still have all the tough to buy for people still to do with no clue what to buy them.

This will be my last January race for some time. I know I said 2010 would be but with yesterday's weather & this week of really really cold temps. I'm done.

Have a great day everyone........Stay warm........Sue

Hey everyone!

Thanks! :) I felt good about it overall.

Yesterday I managed to slam my leg just below my knee cap into the bedframe. I've had the bed since July and haven't managed to do that this whole time, then WHAM three weeks and 6 days before the Half I hit it. OUCH!!! I was scheduled for a rest day yesterday and definitely took it - along with icing the area off and on all day. And some friends suggested some bruise cream, so I got some of that. I think it'll be ok...just a little sore still.

Today's my 9 reps of 4:1. I am really considering skipping the last writing class - it's been a sucky experience, which is sad because I'd loved my experience with Gotham to this point, and I'm just not sure I can deal with going even this last time. If I skip, I'll go run in Prospect Park. If I decide to be dutiful and go grudgingly I'll hamster around the park close to my apartment. Both my training runs are slated to be 4:1 this week. My long run, which will be my 15K race, is to be 3:2 per the schedule...I'm debating making it 3:30/1:30...but I'll see how I'm feeling closer to the time and make that call.

Hope all are well!!

~beth

Hi everyone!

Just a quick check-in to report on my progress. DH and I ran on the indoor track at our gym yesterday. Winter storm was starting in our area with wind chills in the single digits! :cold: I'm happy to report that I got in 8 miles! My quads were screaming and my right knee felt a little wonky, but otherwise okay. Stretched afterwards, came home, showered and spent the evening on the couch catching up on shows on the Tivo. Next weekend I will go for the 10 miler!

Went to my chiro today and he said he thought I was in pretty good shape, much better than two years ago when I did my first half. He said he was concerned as to if I could even finish that one!

Checked on bib numbers and mine is 43023. DH (Ken) is 32514.

Hi Team!

Lynn- That’s cool you got to keep the beach towels. That’s a pretty neat thing to get to keep. Do you water your trees year round?

Vicky- Well it’s the county that clears the parking lot and I doubt it would help. One of my coworkers is out for 3 months because she tripped over some broken pavement a few months ago and they didn’t even fix that right away. She had to have surgery. You would think they would salt but surprisingly they don’t seem to. We got some rain over the weekend so now the roads are pretty clear, but we’ve had pretty heavy fog the last 3-4 days. How’s it going with the softer landing while running? That’s great your knee is feeling ok.

Nikki- I hope you feel better soon!

Margie- The Leapster Explorer sounds like a great choice. I would get tense too if I broke my ankle! What projects did you do with the kids today?

Saylan- I’m glad you enjoyed your snow days!

Dave- I’m not going to marathon weekend this year, but well said on reminding us to tell ourselves “I believe”. :) I found your words very inspiring and encouraging.

Beth- Congrats on your race this past weekend!

Connie- I’m glad you liked Tangled. I’d like to see it sometime in the near future.

Mary- Way to go on the 8 miles!!! I’m glad you’re feeling pretty good! That’s great news.

AFM, I’ve been busy with Christmas stuff. Almost done with shopping- just a few more things to get this weekend. We finally watched Toy Story 3 tonight. Is anyone planning on running the Disneyland half this next year?

Good Morning Team!

Sue – I spent all day yesterday shopping – not much fun – still have not decided what to get Scott. Have almost everything ready for presents that have to be shipped. Jan. races are tough, we just went into them under-trained.

Beth – Pixie dust for the knee, baby it for a day or so.

Mary – Great job on the 8 miler!

Regina – Yes, we have to water year round here – which I did not learn until half way thru my first winter. Because there is no snow cover and lots of wind, ground loses moisture year round, so every warm day (usually at least one or two a month) we all go out and water all our trees and bushes. I will try to do it again today as it will be getting cold tomorrow (not as cold as the mid west but still too cold to water). We are going to the DL half - but have not yet decided if we will walk it or volunteer - but we have our hotel reservations made!

AFM – Since I spent the whole day shopping, just got a short dog walk in. Then it was time to get dinner ready. Today I am not leaving the house, so I will catch up on cleaning, working on Christmas packages, laundry and more exercise!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Lynn I have been reading your's and Scotts posts and it appears that we are colder than you guys. It's currently 1 degree here, that is the coldest temperature for this year which has been record cold. It does seem as though the weather patterns are changing, maybe in a few years they will move WDW from freezing Orlando to balmy Cheyenne.

Sally and I are taking a few days off since it's so bitter cold outside and the mall is impossible. We probably need to rest a little bit anyway.

Have a magical day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team! It's another bitterly cold day in the big city! You know it's cold too when you see several people in the office surfing sites looking for winter coats. Maybe I spoke too soon about those Canada Goose jackets, they're starting to looking pretty good right about now. Unfortunately, they're waaaayy out of my budget so the search for a down coat continues! Waiting 30 minutes or more for a bus that may or may not come in 8F (-13C) weather is not fun :(

Dave - Hope you and Sally stay warm! If it's this cold where you are, a warmer January in FL does not look good.

Margie - Sounds like it was a fun day yesterday! And the cookies turned out wonderfully! I ate two  because I had to test them out but plan to give the rest away. I'm probably going to make another batch to give away since they were so easy! My bib number is 7548 - I've heard that the link for the waivers was released prematurely so if anything changes, I'll repost my bib!

Lynn - You're keeping very busy! Is your next trip the cruise in January?

Regina - That's awful what happened to your coworker :( Was she able to get any kind of compensation to help pay for the surgery or the physio afterward? I'm not sure how to run lighter - someone said I might have to get the Vibram shoes to practice in but maybe I'll just try actual barefoot running since it would just be on the TM. And I owe you an email  I've just been caught up playing Epic Mickey!

Mary - Keep warm! Sounds like you've been getting the same weather we have. An indoor track sounds like a good idea. Good luck with the 10 miler next weekend!

Beth - I did something similar to my right knee a few years ago. pixiedust: for you and I hope it's feeling a little better today!

Sue - Thank goodness for the underground path on days like today! It's a little bit longer because it's not direct but I don't mind spending the extra time walking indoors. I'm pretty much done my shopping - I'm waiting for a few things in the mail but that's about it. I bought Christmas bags this year - I didn't want to bother with wrapping stuff :)

Connie - What kind of cookies are you making? If they're simple, can you post the recipe? My money is in the mail and on it's way to you :)

Saylan - I'd say do the race but only if you can get the okay for the vacation to do it. Otherwise there will be other races and Disney will still be there for the Princess next year.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Hi everyone! :santa:

We're definitely cold here too, and the wind isn't helping matters!!!

I did get my run in yesterday. Pulled out a new pair of shoes. Other than the really short laces, I liked them. They're the "new" Asics GT-2150 - the GT-2160! My legs were happy - though whether that's the shoes or the full rest day on Sunday is anyone's guess. My knee felt a lot better. It's still a little sore to the touch, but running on it was no problem. Thank goodness!!

Waiting to hear about the NYC Half. We're supposed to hear tomorrow. People on runnersworld's forum said that there is usually a charge that shows up a day or two before the announcement, and if that's the case I didn't get in. BUT given how much of a mess this lottery has been, I'm not being totally sad yet. I'll wait until tomorrow's announcement.

Sunday's the 15K. I'm starting to freak out about it a little. I shouldn't. It's essentially the long run in my training plan. AND it's in hilly Central Park. So I should be able to look at it as definitely a good prep - if I can do 9.3 miles on hills, I should definitely be fine in flat Disney. I think it's just seeing that 15 there that's EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! :scared1:

And Margie, no. I was very bad and didn't go to class last night. The topic was "the industry", and given how jaded the teacher has seemed to be (yes, I let them know that on the anonymous internet evaluation I did) I didn't think I'd get a lot out of it. I'll keep going on my own and sometime in the future either revisit playwriting (which I loved) or novel writing (which I now can since I've suffered through fiction 1).

Hope all are well!!

Hugs!!

~beth
