Hakuna Matata - Marching in like Lions!

Happy Friday Team!

I need to make it quick. The Friday afternoon work panic is setting in for a few people.

Everyone racing this weekend. Enjoy & have a great race!

Vicky, It's all going to depend on the wind & what direction it will be blowing off Lake Ont.. First 10k should be good. 10k (Woodward Ave.) through 17k (Beach Blvd.) you will have wind off the lake.
Remember to save something for the end. 25k Spring Garden Rd. (small little hills) through Valley Inn Rd (the big hill). You might also run into wind once you are back on York Blvd. Don't let the reaper call you home.;)
Have a great race. Can't wait to hear your race report.

Need to run.......Have a great weekend everyone........Sue

Regina, Yikes! I've had a couple of dog experiences but none where it was Doberman. Most were just annoying chasing little dogs. (Note: I am a dog lover but there is such a thing as poorly trained ill-mannered dogs).

Margie, I always love your kudos and positiveness! How is Hagen?

Kirsty, Sorry about Pittsburgh and that your still having chair trouble. Glad you were able to get in a work out.

AFM, 4.25 miles in 38 minutes today. I'm feeling fine now and the weather is gorgeous. Tomorrow is my track babies' first meet.

Best,
Jennifer

Jennifer - Thank You!
My Little Hagen is better, but he still does not feel good.
Track Babies First Meet :goodvibes
Is tomorrow your Birthday?

Dave, I think one of us might have misunderstood 'our little Energizer Bunny.' :upsidedow

I think she was saying we are just reminded to change our workouts periodically so our bodies - muscles to not become accustomed to the same repeated exercises, especially if you are trying to lose weight.

I don't know about you, but I work hard at toning and strengthening all muscles for endurance. It would be nice, but I do not have the time or energy to do full body workouts all at one time...I split it into three different ones upper body, lower body, and ABS -I try to get each in twice a week. Some weeks getting those 6-hors in is a stretch! Maybe it's because I am older, but all my muscles need it! :sad2:

- Body Builders want to achieve muscle growth as opposed to focusing on gaining strength, power, or endurance. What I have observed at the gym is they do the progressive overloading.

Good evening everyone. :cheer2: Good luck in your races Mike, Liz, Dave and Vicky!!!:cheer2:

I just returned from the gym and doing my 9/1 run/walks and I'm feeling pretty good. :) The only problem is that I am starting to get blisters, with the worst one on my first toe next to my big toe but it seems like maybe I'm only getting it when I run on the TM??? I'm still trying to figure it out and pin point the issue. I'm thinking maybe I need new running shoes?

The other good news is a work friend offered to run with me when DH is at work so I am excited about that. Of course, I will NOT be running in the neighborhood next to mine again.

Margie - You are right they could go after a child next time and that would not be good. Maybe I will program animal control into my cell phone so I have the number handy just in case I need it. Is there a reason you've been struggling with the excitement of working out? When did you notice it was more difficult for you?

Dave - I haven't heard your flying dog story. Will you share it with me?

Kirstie- How was WDW? Anything exciting going on over there?

Mike - It sounds like being charged by a dog may be a right of passage for a walker/jogger/runner which is unfortunate! I guess I just need to pay attention to where I'm running and what neighborhoods have dogs running loose and which ones don't.

Vicky - Loose dogs in the neighborhood have always made me nervous. It seems like a lot of them don't intend to bite, but unfortunately when they bark and charge me I cannot tell the difference and I am not inclined to wait and find out what they will do when they reach me! :sad2: I have an F1B labradoodle. She's 10 months old and she was a present from my DH when she was 8wks old.

Jennifer - It seems like some of those little dogs can be more aggressive than the bigger ones. Isn't there a term for some of them....ankle biters maybe? When I was taking my dog through off leash training, the little dogs had the worst aggression out of all the dogs in class (over 40) and seemed to belong to the owners that were least inclined to correct the aggressive behavior. (I don't necessarily think that's always how it is, but it happened to be that way at the time I went through) Granted, seems like they would do less damage if they actually bit me though. I am a dog lover as well and truly believe if a dog is having behavior issues it is because the owner is allowing it. The best thing I ever did for my dog was take her through off leash training and expect good behavior from her. It was amazing to see my dog's behavior change over 10 weeks, as well as all the other dogs in the class that stayed until the end. Worth every penny! ::yes:: Of course the training was teaching me how to be a better pet owner, rather than my dog how to be a better pet. :rotfl:

I'm off to relax and enjoy what's left of my evening. Have a wonderful evening everyone!

Good Morning Team! :wave2:

Gerry

If you told us I missed it and did not have you on our Team Calendar...I am sorry!

Good Afternoon Team!

Snowing and blowing here - wind up to 45 mph, 30-40 sustained - not fun out! I am afraid the dogs will miss their walk today!

Good Afternoon Team! :wave2:

May Lynn & Scott - Disney Alaskan Cruise / Many Miles!

Margie - this is great, but the Alaskan cruise is next year! :lmao: This year is the Europe trip and Baltic Cruise - so still many miles!

My dogs do not play well with other dogs, and we live in the country, so there are always loose dogs, most of them are not aggressive, most just want to play - but if they get too close to mine, mine will try to fight with them. I do not let this keep me from walking, but I will sometimes go out of my way to avoid areas where there are often loose dogs. I have found that most will respond to my yelling at them, and most that are loose have owners not far off who will call them back in.

Scott and I both take multi vitamins plus vit c, b complex, b12, gincko (sp?), omega 3,6,9, and several other things daily.

Dave - good luck on your race Sunday!

Anyone else racing - good luck also!

Have a great week all!

Lynn & Scott-
Thanks, Lynn
I will move the Disney Alaskan Cruise
When is your trip to Europe?
The Baltic Cruise?
The Bolder Boulder?

Good Evening Team!

Today was sunny with a little chilly wind. Got out for a 20 miler & did spin Fri. night. Not sure what I will do tomorrow. It will depend on the weather.

Regina, Nice to hear you found a running partner.

Have a great Sunday. Get out and enjoy your training.

Need to sign off. We are getting ready for Earth Hour...............Sue

Cheering our Hakuna Matata Team Weekend Racers! :cheer2::cheer2:
Today…March 28th
Dave – Run for Children / Half Marathon
Vicky – Around the Bay Road Race / 30K

Sue-WTG your 20 miler yesterday!
I hope you know how much you inspire me!

Regina- Ouch, Blisters :headache:
First check your shoes-
I use lots of Body Glide-
Some people use the sock with toes in them-
Could try wrapping the toes that have a problem-

And yes, I know when I started struggling with my motivation & excitement :upsidedow
Several reasons, but the two biggest ones are:
DD has had a rough year dealing with serious medical issues and needs my extra time.
So I have not been able to register for races with the knowledge I might not have the time to train or go.
Then I was really sick for 6-8 week after coming home from WDW.

Later...:flower3:

Just heading out for my walk. Just wanted a quick shout out to my teammates Vicky and Dave!!!!!!

Margie, I was under the weather after coming home from Disney also. But this winter has made me stronger in a lot of ways. Reminds me of a Beatle's song, 'I get by with a little help from my friends".

The first half marathon of the year is in the bag. The official race results show my time as 2:36 but by my watch and the time clock at the end I did a 2:45 so that's what I'm claiming. Not sure how they got the times off so far but they all looked like they were off. It showed a walker doing a 30 min 5K and he is one of my students and I know he isn't near that fast unless he was running.

The race went wonderfully, pacing was perfect with 5 miles at 1:03 and 10 miles at 1:06 so another reason that I'm sure of my watch time, besides one of my walkers was doing it with me and his watch matched mine. We were surprised at the hills on the course, it was through farm country so I expected it to be a little flatter than it was.

I could have gone a bit faster but it was my first half that I wasn't helping pace someone else to finish so I planned a 2:45 to see how that felt. It was plenty challenging and I had all I wanted. Temp cooperated, 30 to start and 50s at the end with sun the whole time. It poured rain the day before and it's back raining today. God looks out for poor old panda lovers I guess.

I had to work after the race so I was sore by the time I finally got to bed last night, but I feel awesome today. I am resting though, except for work.

Everyone have an amazing day and live every minute of it.

Dave:hippie:

WTG KIds great races results,

We gotta get out today, wond has slacked some and the skies are clear.

We will miss the Bolder Boulder, and a local 5K because of the Europe trip and cruises.

Okay kids, probable long post warning here!

Dave~ Great job in your race!

Vicky~ Let us know how you did!

Regina~ My wife is doing the 24 week training plan from The Complete Book of Beginning Running by Amby Burfoot. She shredded her ACL in her right knee last fall and had it surgically replaced. I think she is on week 11 with running 10/ walking 2. Similiar to what you are doing. She has only done one race which was the Everest Challenge at WDW in 2008. We have a couple more scheduled so far this year, the EEC again in June and a 5K adventure race in May.
I've run on and off for a few years now. I became more serious about it last year, completing my first 10K at WDW last fall. Then I was diagnosed with colon cancer and had surgery on 12/29 to fix me up. All is well now! But, I had to start training all over again. I will be doing the Donald in 2011, my first half marathon, if I don't go nutso and sign up for the Wine and Dine. I'm doing the Running for Mortals 10K run/walk program right now and upon completion will start the Marathon for Mortals half marathon program.
If you are getting blisters, then yes it's time to find some different shoes, also technical socks might help too. Find a running store near you, or make the investment of a long drive if you have to. They should be able to fit you with a shoe that not only fits, but also is catered to your running movement. They should watch you as your run to see how your feet and legs move. Different shoes can make a huge difference, and I have my personal favorites.
I tend to pronate (roll) my right foot alot. I think I may have one leg longer then the other. Also, one foot is a half size larger. No, I'm not a mutant!
------------------------

Penguin in the Park 5K:

I took me about 3.5 hours to reach Decatur, IL. I drove down Friday afternoon (Liz had to work :sad2: ) picked up my packet, checked into my hotel and went to the movies and saw How to Train your Dragon in 3D :3dglasses. Great movie, although I'm biased as my family is originally from Denmark and Norway.
Before the race started, I got there really early, I got to talk to John Bingham for quite awhile! He wrote the For Mortals books and has had some columns in several running magazines. We talked about alot of stuff, and told him my cancer story and how his program is helping me get going again.
Really great guy! Tuns out his brother lives about a mile form me. It's a small world after all.....
There were 398 racers and the course had some challenging hills, but I ran the whole way. I finished 197 with an official time of 30:09. My watch said 29:19 which I believe is more acurate, as they turned on everyones timing chip all at once. (Not as you crossed the starting line). I started way back in the pack. My official pace was 9:44 a mile. Not bad considering I'm still about 20lbs overweight, compared to last fall.
After the race there was an indoor awards party in the gym at Millikin University with food and drinks. I ran into John again, and got my books autographed and a picture taken with him. He spent alot of time talking to alot of people. When he did his inspirational talk before the awards, he started talking about me, and my post cancer comeback! Luckily he didn't call me up there! Later on he came running across the gym to ask me to talk to a local tv reporter! I agreed, and looked on ther website today, but can't find anything on the race. Oh, well, I sounded like a dork anyway!
I had a great time and will go back next year, the people were great and they put on well organized race. Next year, Liz is going with for sure!

First race of the year under my belt, Mike

Mike, Congrats! How cool that you got to meet John Bingham.

Dave, What a fast moving Panda you are!

Yesterday was the first track meet of the season. I probably logged about 3 miles while coaching. The girls did pretty well. We were competing against 5 and 6A schools and we're only 4A so we were a little out of our league. The placed 5th overall and I had individuals medal in the 100, 400, 800, and high jump.

Today was "long" run of Recovery Week 1 6.2 miles in 55 minutes. I wanted to go farther SOOOOOOO bad, but I'm trying to force myself to truly recover.

Best,
Jennifer
