Okay kids, probable long post warning here!
Dave~ Great job in your race!
Vicky~ Let us know how you did!
Regina~ My wife is doing the 24 week training plan from The Complete Book of Beginning Running by Amby Burfoot. She shredded her ACL in her right knee last fall and had it surgically replaced. I think she is on week 11 with running 10/ walking 2. Similiar to what you are doing. She has only done one race which was the Everest Challenge at WDW in 2008. We have a couple more scheduled so far this year, the EEC again in June and a 5K adventure race in May.
I've run on and off for a few years now. I became more serious about it last year, completing my first 10K at WDW last fall. Then I was diagnosed with colon cancer and had surgery on 12/29 to fix me up. All is well now! But, I had to start training all over again. I will be doing the Donald in 2011, my first half marathon, if I don't go nutso and sign up for the Wine and Dine. I'm doing the Running for Mortals 10K run/walk program right now and upon completion will start the Marathon for Mortals half marathon program.
If you are getting blisters, then yes it's time to find some different shoes, also technical socks might help too. Find a running store near you, or make the investment of a long drive if you have to. They should be able to fit you with a shoe that not only fits, but also is catered to your running movement. They should watch you as your run to see how your feet and legs move. Different shoes can make a huge difference, and I have my personal favorites.
I tend to pronate (roll) my right foot alot. I think I may have one leg longer then the other. Also, one foot is a half size larger. No, I'm not a mutant!

Penguin in the Park 5K:
I took me about 3.5 hours to reach Decatur, IL. I drove down Friday afternoon (Liz had to work

) picked up my packet, checked into my hotel and went to the movies and saw How to Train your Dragon in 3D

. Great movie, although I'm biased as my family is originally from Denmark and Norway.
Before the race started, I got there really early, I got to talk to John Bingham for quite awhile! He wrote the For Mortals books and has had some columns in several running magazines. We talked about alot of stuff, and told him my cancer story and how his program is helping me get going again.
Really great guy! Tuns out his brother lives about a mile form me. It's a small world after all.....

There were 398 racers and the course had some challenging hills, but I ran the whole way. I finished 197 with an official time of 30:09. My watch said 29:19 which I believe is more acurate, as they turned on everyones timing chip all at once. (Not as you crossed the starting line). I started way back in the pack. My official pace was 9:44 a mile. Not bad considering I'm still about 20lbs overweight, compared to last fall.
After the race there was an indoor awards party in the gym at Millikin University with food and drinks. I ran into John again, and got my books autographed and a picture taken with him. He spent alot of time talking to alot of people. When he did his inspirational talk before the awards, he started talking about me, and my post cancer comeback! Luckily he didn't call me up there! Later on he came running across the gym to ask me to talk to a local tv reporter!

I agreed, and looked on ther website today, but can't find anything on the race. Oh, well, I sounded like a dork anyway!
I had a great time and will go back next year, the people were great and they put on well organized race. Next year, Liz is going with for sure!
First race of the year under my belt, Mike
