Hakuna Matada - Racing into January!

Good Morning Team!

Robbie - Welcome to the group!

Vicky - The MS team meeting was to plan fundraising ideas, the MS bike ride for WY is in August. Last year was our first year doing it, and we joined a team not knowing anything about it. It is a great group of folks, so we are more involved this year. Great looking beignets!

Dave - Good job on the training! Sorry, can’t help on free dining, we eat most of our meal in the condo, so we do not use any of the dining plans.

Tandy - We will be in South Africa for 2 weeks, Scott is, as we “speak”, booking us on a bike ride in Cape Town on our “free” day there.

AFM - We got out for dog walk in spite of the wind, temps were nice. Today will be warmer, but still rather windy. Tomorrow the wind is supposed to die down, but will be colder again. After the walk, I did get down on the spin bike for about 20 min, and did a few push ups and sit ups.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Thanks for the welcome

Vicki- yes it is the Blue Nose that I will bee running in. Have you ever done it? And yes, I am planning on at least doing Goofy, but since I am there, I am thinking I might as well tack on a 5K warm up run Friday morning to become Dopey.

I like that this group has some peeps that have already done Goofy. I am kind of nervous about the prospect of running a full marathon, let alone a half and a full back to back! Before I ran my first half marathon, I felt pretty confident as I felt I had plenty in the tank after any 10-15K run…but my legs feel pretty sore/tired after running a half marathon or any training run over 13 miles- 20K really. Pretty sure the problem is I go too fast, even in training runs…Guess I really need to learn to pace myself better

My trainer drilled into me that my Saturday Long Slow Run is just that -- a very SLOW run whose purpose to train the body for "endurance" (not speed) and to utilize fat burning for fuel. It was hard for me to learn to run slow on those long runs, but it does really help in the 'long run' (pun intended). ;)

Welcome to our group! We have a lot of knowledgeable, experienced runners here who are great advice givers to those of us who are new to the sport. And everyone here are supportive and 'cool'.

Robbie, I did my first marathon and first goofy at the same time :thumbsup2 figured just get it over with at the same time.

Mike, Rick: Looks like there may be a Chicago road trip in the works....yipeeeee

Lynn: When do you guys leave? I am sure I seen it just can't remember.

Ooopss sorry gotta run will continue the check in later.

Happy Monday team! I had my post typed out and then my browser crashed. B'oh! So I'm just going to do an abbreviated version.

Kim - What's summer without a road trip? :thumbsup2

Rick - Great reminder about the LR. It's there so your body can get use to the mileage. I'm one who sometimes rushes the LR because there's other stuff that needs to get done on the weekend.

Robbie - I did my first Goofy this year and it was my second full. I can tell you that I didn't feel any worse on Sunday having done the half the day before than I did when I did my full by itself. Just make sure you get in a few back to back LRs and you'll be fine :thumbsup2 A few people here ran their first full together with their first Goofy - Tandy, Kim and Regina would be the ones to talk to about that. Sue probably has the most Goofys under her belt and Dave is our resident race walker and he's done Goofy a number of times too. Mike did his first Dopey this year and PR'ed the full! :cheer2:

I'm the opposite on pace, I tend to start out slower and go faster as the race progresses. But I'm not that fast to begin with. Tandy, Mike, Eva and Sue are the speedy ones in the group.

I haven't done the Blue Nose Marathon before but it's on my list. I'd love to travel out to the east coast one day. It looks like a nice place to vacation in the summer!

Lynn - Good job on the workouts! I think we got a bit of your snow and wind here tonight! Do your pups stay at a kennel or with friends when you travel?

Tandy - I guess everyone was in the mood for donuts this weekend! I had help eating the batch I made, otherwise I would have been in so much trouble. My trainer asked me what I had been eating recently... um... not much (that's good for me) But I promised to clean up my eating!

The psychology stuff sounds familiar but it's been a while since I've looked at my first year psych stuff. Does it explain why almost everyone ran Goofy in January

How did your run go? Hope it was pain-free!

Elizabeth - pixiedust:

AFM - I worked out at the gym today and did the usual leg work along with some core work. I also did 3 miles on the TM afterward and had two of my 1 mile splits at 8:55 m/m Not bad! I did have to take walk breaks but I think I'm ready to get back into it... Good thing too because I saw Kim post about it being day 1 of training for the Goodlife Half. Yikes!

I also promised my PT that I'm done with the junk more or less so I have to go back to clean eating!

I finished at the gym and found my car covered in snow. I spent a good 5 minutes cleaning it off (I have short snow brush  ). It felt like that was another mini workout!

That's it... not much else is going on! Have a great night everyone! :wave2:

Hello team! Just checking in, sorry for the lack of posts. Things are going ok here. Work is already keeping us busy this week and it's only Monday!

On Saturday, we finally went for our first run since the DL half. I didn't intend to take that much of a break, but I gave myself a week off and then I got a cold. I'm feeling much better now and the run went alright.

Vicky - Can you add the DL half to the calendar for me? Patrick is also running it.

Robbie - Welcome!

I'll try to come back soon and catch up on everyone's posts. Hope everyone is well. Have a good night!

I understand about the busy Emily. It seems like we have several full time jobs sometimes.

Thanks for the info on the Free Dining y'all, I hope they do it and if anyone sees anything let me know. Lynn I know you guys like to cook and I do also but our room at most only has a microwave and coffee pot. I'd like for Sally to get the thrill of being able to sample the deserts and appitizers that we normally couldn't afford since that makes a dinner at a good Disney place very expensive. I remember several dinners form the last time we had the dining plan that was well over a $100 for the two of us.

Training will be a pleasure today since the weather will be warm and sunny here today. I'm either doing the track or the hills today haven't decided which yet.

Hope everyone else has a magical Tuesday. Febuary starts tomorrow.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Pups stay in a kennel - they love the kennel, and the kennel folks seem to love them!

Dave - We really so not do that much “cooking”, we do simple things, and for rooms with just microwaves, those new microwave meals that are not frozen are not too bad. We also do soups and sandwiches when in rooms with only microwaves and fridges.

Kim - Catch you later!

Emily - Glad you are feeling better!

Robbie - you will get lots of advise on the Goofy here!

AFM - Still windy, but did get out for dog walk then on the spin bike for a bit. Wind is calmer today, if not too cold, I think we will get outside on the bikes today!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Welcome, Robbie!

Hi, everyone else,

I'm still in pain and not doing any exercise. However, there is improvement; your pixie dust is helping:thumbsup2. Next visit to the doc is tomorrow morning. Keep your fingers crossed that I'm cleared soon for running as the Princess is fast approaching.

I'll check in tomorrow morning but wishing you all a good Tuesday!

We are keeping you in our prayers for a positive meeting with the doctor tomorrow!

I had a great 4 mile training walk this morning. I'm lovin the warm weather at the end of January. This is the winter I have been hoping we would have, I need it to get the best start on the year.

I hope everyone gets healed up and feels better soon. I was puny this time last year and couldn't even begin to train till march.

Tomorrow will be another 10 miler with my group, last week was a tough walk since we worked on speed the last 3 miles of it. I'm sure this week will be just as tough or tougher.

Have a great day y'all.

Good luck tomorrow. I had a few minor medical issues that kept me from training/working out over the past couple years...it can definitely be frustrating I know. Hoping everything goes well

Well January is over, and I am happy to say I am one of the 10% of the population who stuck to my New Year's health and fitness goals a month out. Many of them are race/time related which is still TBD, but another one was to lose Christmas holiday and November Disney trip weight I put on. So far it has been 31 days since I drank any beer or ate any junk food whatsoever and am 9 lbs lighter than 31 days ago. I am also pleased with the amount of outdoor running I got in this January. I did not think I would like cold weather running, but since my 2012 running goals are loftier than last year, I really wanted to start training earlier....it is not really that bad once you get going. The only thing that does stop me and puts me on the treadmill is days where this is a lot of ice and slush on my running routes. Does anyone else have early 2012 success stories to share?

Good morning team. I hope everyone is doing well.

Robbie: Great job on the weight loss and I'm sure you'll keep it going. I am on my way to my goal weight as well. I still have 7 pounds to go, so not far at all. As far as winter running, it does take some getting used to. I hate the cold, but really enjoy running in it, for some reason. Yes, slush and ice stink. I'm okay with snow, except that no one ever shovels their sidewalks here.
Oh, and like Vicky said, a lot of us ran Goofy along with running our first full. It was a great experience. As long as you train properly, it's very doable!

Dave: Yes, we are all REALLY lucky this year with the weather. Of course, I'm a little worried about what that means for this summer.

Elizabeth: I'm happy to hear that you're better, but hope you get fully healed soon. Good luck with the doctor's appointment.

Rick: I just wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying your blog. You have had such an inspiring journey to health. :thumbsup2

Lynn: I'm not sure I could handle doing the MS bike ride in August. But, then, I'm assuming you guys aren't as hot there as we are. What distance is the ride? Ours is 150 miles over 2 days.

Emily: A break from running can really be good for you. You can come back much stronger. Hope things slow down soon.

Vicky: Yes, I believe groupthink is the reason for the Hakuna Matada Goofy extravaganza this January! ;) Very good.
I bet your trainer is just being picky. You did such a great job last year with your weight loss, so I wouldn't worry much. I'm cleaning up today too, so we'll be in it together! :thumbsup2
Great job on the running speed. I bet you'll get that half marathon goal of under 2 hours soon! As long as you just keep up the smart training.

Kim: Hope to hear how things are going soon. :)

AFM: 3 runs this week, and my knee doesn't hurt! I did the 1 mile on the TM, then, ran 1.75 outside, and then, another 1.5 with Harrison yesterday. Oh, and Harrison ran his fastest yet. He managed a 10m/m pace, which for him, is fabulous. I pushed the speed a little the day before, and managed 8 m/m for the whole run. So, I'm hopeful that I'm healed fully. I'm still icing the knee when I get done running or walking, but that's just to make sure. ;)

Didn't lose any weight this week, but I'm fully committed today to stick to clean eating. I am trying to plan out dinners, which I hate doing, but am excited to get back on track. Of course, Frank asked me if we could go out with friends for italian food this weekend. That will involve lots of bread, pasta and wine. I would hate to say no, but I know it'll be hard to resist my very favorite foods!

I hope everyone has a great day.

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Hope your 10 miler goes well today!

Elizabeth - More Pixie Dust for you!

Robbie - Congrats! You are doing great!

Tandy - Looks like you posted the same time as me - it can get warm here in August, but there is not the humidity you have in KC. Good luck with Zumba.

AFM - We did get out for a bike ride yesterday - 10 miles in just under an hour - of course, the wind picked up when we left and stopped when we got home, but it felt great to get out on the bikes! Dogs also got their walk around the block. Might make it out again today before snow hits tomorrow.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day

Happy Wednesday, everyone,

I'm cleared for running again! Still have quite a bit of PT scheduled for the month but I'm so happy to add running back in. After all, it is 22 days until the beginning of the Princess half weekend.

Thanks for all the well wishes and encouragement. Your posts really helped me stay positive and kept me from doing something stupid by running too soon.

Glad to read about the good weather, weight loss, and great training going on. Enjoy the day everyone!

I have such a hard time loading the DisBoards with it being very slow-loading. Usually only at work but sometimes at home too. Makes tying to catch up really annoying! /rant :lmao:

Kim: I'm in for *grumble*Goodlife*grumble* and the Women's Niagara. I'm still debating on mudruns in general but I'll take a look at the one you mentioned in Uxbridge (I have no idea where that is!). It'd be cool if you could do the Midsummer one with Vicky (and most likely me). Oh, and the grumble is nothing to do with the race, just the name Goodlife. They and I have history, not pleasant history, that means I won't ever join their gyms again.

Ugh, I really hate standing on one foot (like lunges) exercises without pain. I can't imagine doing them with PF.

Tandy: You and me both. I need to work on my running before I work on my flame jumping, I think. I'm sure you're going to rock the Honors! Sounds like your arm routine is great! I've never really considered Zumba but I may have to the way you're recommending it. :thumbsup2

You're inspiring me to want to go back to school for a degree in something that will lead me onto a career path that will satisfy me.

You and I have the same favourites (Italian foods) so I feel your pain. Cutting out on grainy-carbs is something I just can't seem to pull off.

Sue: Thanks for the car tip about the zoo race. I'm still debating on that one, but I'll definitely keep that in mind if I sign up for it. I was last to the zoo when I was 5 so um... my memory of the place is sketchy at best, lol.

Elizabeth: I'm glad you're cleared to run again. Remember to pace yourself though. We want to see you being able to compete for many years to come.

Vicky: Your beignets looked delicious! I might break my no-sweets and no carbs rule for them.

I'd love to work on speed before Disney in January 2013 so I might pare it back a bit. Right now I'm thinking of a race a month or so, depending on length. That doesn't seem too bad and offers a little wiggle room in terms of recovery and maintenance. Not all of us can be Mike, I guess.

What did your trainer say about the obstacles? I find trainers are prone to insanity, myself, so I'm sure he just shrugged and said "no biggy!". :rotfl2:

I'd love to make it down to a 10 minute mile by January.

Oh, that's so sad that the leader wasn't correcting the forms, especially on planks. Those can be terrible if done wrong. And I know what you mean about having worked with people so the forms are well known to you. I always cringe when I see people working alone at the gym, knowing that they aren't quite right. I often point things out and ask my trainer if there's something wrong there, just so I can at least learn from others and avoid mistakes when on my own. She also has me doing rowing on a machine and I have to say I really struggle with keeping my breath steady. I'm sure the actual thing is much more challenging!

I'm with you on cleaning up the eating. My trainer has said I need to work on that to get over the plateau I'm at. I have the muscle there but the fat stores aren't going because I'm still grain-carbing and sugar-carbing too much. I just really struggle with veggies and particularly getting enough to eat while at work. Any tips you come up with, I'd love to hear!

Kim/Vicky: Road trips are awesome! DBF is on board for having a Saylan-free weekend. Now to find out if my friends mind me missing the WD.

Though, if we start calling ourselves the Three Canadian Cabelleros, can I be Donald? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease? :rotfl2: I totally have his temper so it's perfect!

Robbie: Belated Welcome from one Canadian to another (and there's so many of us in here now)! My bff recently moved from Halifax where she was studying at Dalhousie. I was always jealous of her being able to live on the east coast. Those provinces are so lovely!

We're like the Haunted Mansion, there's always room for more! You may find you're not nearly as solo as you thought. As you get used to us, I'm sure you'll find we're horribly caring and devoted to our members. :rotfl: Team meets are optional, but I'll speak from experience that I feel I missed out when I couldn't make it to them this year. This is a great bunch of people.

Grats on sticking to your resolutions. It's not easy!

AFM: I'm struggling, as I mentioned above, with cleaning up my eating. I'm finding I can't seem to cut out the grain-based carbs as much as I need to and I can't find an easy way of bringing more vegetables into my meals. I'm making progress on my level of weights but I can't seem to get my weight to budge (it went up about 5lbs between Disney and Christmas). It's really really frustrating. :sad1: I'm not really about the weight, but more about the toning and I hate that I can't seem to get this right (even though I'm also painfully aware it's a fair bit to do with my stress and hormone issues lately).

I registered for the *grumble*Goodlife*grumble* and the Niagara Inaugural Women's Half in June so those can be added if you want to, Vicky. I might wait on Midsummer until the next credit card billing cycle. I was disappointed to see over 15$ in processing fees/taxes on the Niagara race. :headache:

There's a race weekend locally in mid-April at which I was hoping to do a half but I might cut it back to the 10K just to ease back into things. I have until really close to the race date to register so I'm playing it by ear right now.

Also, a good argument for running? My father (61) was carded trying to buy alocohol in Arizona. First time in over 40 years, and it only happened after he did his first race. If that doesn't encourage people to keep up with their running, I dunno what will. Apparently, Ontario licenses aren't considered valid ID at Target, either. :confused3

We saw an ad for the Brazil Butt Lift work out videos while we were at Riverside in January and (in true DBF style), DBF unprompted said "You definitely need to try that!". I swear he suffers from perma-foot-in-mouth disease! Anyway, we got back, he downloaded it, and I've been trying it on my non-trainer days. The first couple of days? Let me just say, 'Ouchie'. My poor tush! These are definitely not beginner videos, no matter how they market it, and like Vicky's dragonboat boot camps, unless you've spent some time learning how to isolate, you won't get nearly as much out of it. If you have, they will probably leave you with very sore muscles, at least the first time through.

And apologies to anyone on FB who may have been offended by my driving rant, also. I used some harsh language but I was seeing red by the time I got home. I hope no one was upset by it.
