:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 58 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

:yay: The Biggest Loser Challenge! :yay:

We'll weigh in every Friday and there will be one winner for the biggest percentage of weight lost. As well, everyone will get points for the week and the person with the most points will be another winner :) Everyone will be responsible for keeping track of their own points. I like to use an Excel sheet because it makes it easy to keep track of the points.

And so long as there's interest, we can have this go on until the end of August!

Here's how the points will be awarded:

30 minutes of exercises daily - 1 point
Drinking 8 glasses of water a day (8oz each) - 1 point
5 servings of fruits and veggies daily - 1 point
Trying a new food/dish each week - 1 point (ideally this should be a healthy food) :)
Taking a daily vitamin - 1 point
Each pound of weight lost - 1 point (ie. 5lbs=5 points)

Bonus points
Person who has the biggest percentage of weight loss - 1 point
Successfully avoiding the week's temptation - 1 point (up to each inidivudal)
Completing my exercise of the week - 1 point x day

You can bank your exercise minutes so for example if you worked out for an hour on Monday and used Tuesday as a rest day, you'd still have 30 minutes over two days. I know people like rest days so I don't want to penalize anyone.

My exercise for the week is the plank. Let's try for 3 planks of 30 seconds each, rest for 2 minutes in between each plank. Do this each day for a bonus of 7 points for the week!

Lynn - 138 lb (0%) / 5 points (5+0)

Happy belated birthday to Regina and Kyle!!

party: :bday: party:

Hope you guys had an awesome weekend!

Good morning group.

Regina: Thanks for the welcome. I don't know how long we'll be staying in Europe, but we'll definitely have to do more than Germany. I really want to go back and see more of Italy and I've always wanted to go to Greece and Spain, but who knows?
I'm glad you liked the HP movie. After the first one, I haven't seen another, because I didn't feel it did justice to the book. But, I've heard from more than one person that this last movie did, so I may have to see it.
Eating is the hardest part of being healthy for me. I could work out all day long, but it's hard to do all that planning and shopping ahead. ;)

Dave: Congrats on winning your race!!!! I can only dream of a win. I did place 9th overall 2 months ago in a 5k, but I will never get any faster than that 22:03, no matter how hard I try. Glad you enjoyed your winning dinner.

Kim: You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. You've made positive, healthy changes this year. You are working hard. Be proud of what you've accomplished and go for it in the challenge! :thumbsup2
How was the dancing? We love to go out dancing, but my hubby just hasn't had any time lately. :sad1:

Emily: I'm sure you'll do great in the half marathon. I always lose motivation when I get about a month out. Just so much training.

Lynn: Great job on your bike ride. 41 miles is awesome!:thumbsup2
Where in Missouri are you going? I love camping over there, especially in southern Missouri.

AFM: Got back from Texas last night. We had a great time, and the 107 degrees wasn't bad. I forgot that they don't have any humidity. I didn't get one run in though, so I'm having to make up for it this week to get my 3.5 hours of exercise in. ;)
Made it through finals with 3 A's!!!!!!!:cool1: Now, I have 3 weeks until the worst semester of my life.
Got a 5 miler in today. It felt so good to get out there and get some running in. I have zumba tonight and am hoping to lift a little at some point today, but we'll see.

Hope everyone's staying cool.

Hi everyone! I can't believe it's August already! I feel like it was only a little while ago that we were talking about Canada Day and the Fourth of July! Time flies!

Kim/Saylan - Happy Simcoe Day! Hope you ladies are enjoying the long weekend!

Regina - I'm so sorry I forgot your birthday! Happy belated birthday to you and Kyle! I've been busy myself so I haven't had a chance to see HP. How did you like it? Yikes on the 11 hours days! Do you get OT pay? I have a few recipes that I can dig out for you. I think Lynn and Scott have done ABD - I'm wanting to go on the African Safari trip but that's super expensive!

Dave - Congrats on your race!! Sounds like you put your gift card to good use! The BBQ pizza sounds yummy :)

Emily - No worries on posting your weight! And definitely no need to be embarrassed! I'm up 10 lbs from where I was last summer. So I've got work to do as well :) And we definitely want you in the challenge!! I'm glad you've got cool weather! We still have Florida like weather up in Canada - it's nice for the patio but not so good for running.

Lynn - WTG to you and Scott on all the miles! Are you guys planning on a camping trip? I wish there were more organized bike trips around here with pancake breakfasts!

AFM - I did a 15 miler on Saturday and was it ever humid. I did ok with keeping hydrated although I would have liked to have more water instead of Gatorade. My Garmin died after 13 miles so I used my phone to estimate the remaining miles. The last two miles were a killer though. There was very little shade and it was uphill - so I took a few unscheduled walking breaks but I finished! Yesterday I tried to run a 5 miler but got out late. It was so hot and I was still sore from Saturday so I cut it short at 2.5 miles. This morning I got out early to the gym and did a workout with my trainer.

How's everyone doing with the challenge so far? I'm usually not good with eating dairy on the weekend so I really had to force myself to have a yogurt for a snack Saturday and Sunday. How are the planks working out?

Oh and if anyone has healthy recipes they'd like to share, post away :)

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good morning and happy Aug.

Yesterday was an active rest day so today was back to the track for speed intervals.

2 mile warm up, 4 X 200m average time 64 seconds with 600m recovery after each sprint. (Decent walking sprints)
Then walked brisk 2 miles for cool down and endurance on legs worked hard with the speed drills. Then stretching and ice for my sore achillies.

I'm still getting stronger and faster each week. I believe I can keep improving as long as I respect the effort and recover properly after each workout.

Vicky, the BBQ Chicken Pizza was awesome, best I've ever had. I have had some yucky ones also. If they use to much sauce it's soupy instead of flavorful.

Have an awesome monday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Good job on the 15 miler! Thanks for the new thread!

Kim - Good luck on your weight loss!

Dave - Glad you had such a great dinner with your race winnings!

Regina - We have camping on the schedule for Tuesday night - just to test out the camper, we have a longer camping trip later in the month. We have done AbD to Peru - had a great time, yes, we are planning on more trips, just waiting for 2012 schedule to be announced later this month! We went on one of the “Adults Only” trips, and are looking to do that again! There are threads on the different trips - you could check those out for recommendations on different trips. We are looking at China, Galapagos and South Africa - maybe Egypt later if it gets more stable. Scott tends to make his birthday celebration a week or more long!

Tandy - We were in north central Missouri, near Marceline (boyhood home of Walt Disney) and Brookfield. This time we did not camp - too hot! We all stayed with Scott’s parents - on mattresses all over the floors!

Emily - Glad that your weather is better than the rest of us!

AFM - Yesterday we did a “recovery ride” meaning is was casual for Scott (they are never casual for me) of 12 miles on the bike path. Today we got in 16.5 miles - Scott did a few sprints for his time trial training for the Senior Olympics. Tomorrow will be a short ride, we have an appointment in Colorado for bike tune ups at 10am, so we will be out early for a few miles before heading down there.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

No time to check in just wanted to subscribe hope everyone is having a awesome day

Hi Team!

Vicky- Thank you very much for the belated birthday wishes! Lol, no need to apologize! I really liked HP. It was really intense though- non-stop intense since the whole movie was the battle. Yes, we get OT pay so that helps a lot. The African Safari trip is super expensive!! Awesome job finishing your 15 miler! Clever improvise after your Garmin died. I haven’t done your planks yet, but I have to say I am very excited it is the exercise of the week! I’m a little bummed I didn’t see the post until late Sunday!

Tandy- It sounds like your trip will be a lot of fun. I agree, the movies do not do the books justice and left a lot out, but I also loved to see how people portrayed it on screen too. Congrats on your great final grades! What makes the next semester the worst one? I’m glad you run today went well.

Dave- I’m so glad to hear how well your training is going! BBQ chicken pizza does sound yummy. I’m glad they gave you a good gift card!

Lynn- Have a safe camping trip tomorrow! I hope the camper works well for you both. I’ve been surfing the other boards to see what people thought about AbD. I read Greece is going to be announced for 2012 so I’m waiting to see when the dates are. It’s going to take us some time to save up for it but it is the top of my list! We are also interested in South Africa, Egypt, and Australia as well. LOL, one of the people I was recently at training with has a birthday “month”, so a week to me still sounds very reasonable! I hope your easy rides get a little bit better for recovery as you continue consistently riding.

AFM, I ran 3 miles today. I am so out of shape, so I kept it slow and steady with 3min run/3min walk. It was a pretty good day. I also went to the chiro and he gave me some warm up activities to help with my lower back since it’s also been hurting since the accident so we’ll see how that goes. It is really hard for me to drink 8 glasses of water a day! I really had to work to get there.

Good morning team.

I'm heading out for a nice 4 miler on the rolling hills of the park course. I like to workout in a park because since the trees produce oxygen and take in the carbon dioxide then it stands to reason that the air is fresher and more oxygen dense than on the road side.

I need to find someone to do the Goofy with. My walking bud from Nashville has decided to let age and bad knees have there way and give up doing races. Anyone planning about a 13 mpm pace for the half and or the full?

Glad to hear that everyone is doing well and staying upright. Slow steady progress will carry us through to good marathon finishes.

Dave:hippie:

Hello, Team! Happy August!

Just a head's up in case anyone didn't see it already but the waivers (and thus bib #s) are out for the Disneyland Half. I'm still trying to find where I saw what the total number of racers was but I've seen a nuber up to 139## so I'm thinking at least 14000.

DBF and I were stuck out in Mississauge picking up and driving home my grandmother so we couldn't check our numbers right away (his BB doesn't do PDFs). We were trying to guess what numbers we'd each have. He thought if it was out of 14000 he'd have around 11000-12000 so he was really suprised to be in the lower 7s. I'm in the 5s so I'm super excited.

Good morning.

Saylan: Getting the #s is always super exciting. Now, it's real!

Dave: I hope you get some takers. I won't be going, but it sounds like lots are. I couldn't have made it through the full portion of my Goofy this year without Vicky, so I understand the want for a partner.

Regina: It will be a bad semester because I'm taking 11 credit hours plus a full certified nurses aid class, which is another 5 hours. I will be in school, physically, from 8 to 4:30, 5 days a week! If you add in homework/study time, I'm going to be drained. But, the CNA course is only 5 weeks, so then, I'll only have 2 days a week for the rest of the semester. :thumbsup2 You may be out of shape for you, but a lot of people will never be able to do 3 miles. What type of accident were you in?

Lynn: Sorry, I must have put the trip to Mo in with all the camper stuff. I really miss camping, but we just didn't have any room in our new neighborhood for the camper, and got really sick of paying to store it. So, we just cabin it now. Works out, but it's not the same.

Vicky: It sounds like you're doing great on your runs. It's smart to call it quits when you could hurt yourself. I'm enjoying the challenge. I won't get a temptation point this week, because I'm eating everything under the sun, but I'm doing everything else. I love planks, so those are great! :thumbsup2

AFM: Decided to walk the dog today instead of running, but now, I'm thinking of getting on the TM. I need to up those miles and it's already too hot outside. The dog was grateful. He loves to walk, but hates the heat.

Time to go be productive! Have a great day everyone.

Good Morning Team!

It's been so long. I can't believe I haven't posted since March & it's now August. Work & life have been crazy busy.

Glad to hear everyone is doing well.

Welcome, Tandy!

Dave, What great race results. You sould be so proud.

Vicky, We need to get together for lunch soon!

I just get started on a post & must rush off for work..
Have a great day everyone...........Sue

Great to see you back Sue. Can I come have lunch with you and Vicky?

Great training walk this morning, 4 miles 47:53 and that was with the first mile slower to warm up.

I keep wanting to say Happy Monday but it's not LOL

Sue - Yes, a lunch is definitely in order! I will send you an email :) We miss you!!

Dave - Of course you're welcome to join us for lunch! The more the merrier :) Maybe try posting a thread on the main board looking for a walking partner. Who did walk with at the races this year? You are doing awesome with your training!

Saylan - I love getting the waivers and knowing the bib numbers. Are you running the race with DBF?

Regina - I've done a birthday month before  It's actually a bit nicer because you can spread out all the eating instead of cramming it into a day. I was talking to my trainer yesterday and he was saying his BIL is from South Africa. He said his BIL still thought there were parts of South Africa that were dangerous to visit. I wanted to travel there but that's the third person that I've heard that from. Greece would be cool! Can't go wrong with Greek food :)

And you're definitely not out of shape doing 3/3 intervals! Most people I know can't even run for 3 minutes, never mind 3 miles! I find with running, you'll get your fitness level back in a few weeks. I'm glad the chiro visits are helping!

Tandy - The hot weather is crazy! On Saturday, I checked the temperature reading at 8AM and it was 22C. An hour later it had already gone up to 26C! I've been thinking lately of doing a few miles outside and then switching to the TM inside for the rest. And with the full, if you weren't there, I would have probably run back to my room as we passed by the Poly

Lynn - The camping trip sounds like fun! Do you take the pups with you? Say hi to Scott :)

Kim - :wave2: Are you going to Taste of the Danforth this weekend?

AFM - I had an hour of training yesterday - deadlifting, hamstring curls, pushing the stupid sandbag around the gym floor and some TRX exercises. The trainer thought I'd lost weight - I think it's water weight from running 15 miles in the heat on Saturday but hey, I'll take it. He asked if I was still going to the wedding and I said yeah probably ... but when I went to go look for my reply card, I couldn't find it. Maybe it's a sign not to go...

I picked up a new pair of shoes on the weekend. Does anyone run in Asics 1160s? I did 10 minutes on the TM in them and they seem okay. I don't love them though. I guess I'm still stuck on the NB 769. I also tried out a pair of Brooks but they seemed heavy. The girl at the store didn't seem to have any Saucony shoes she wanted me to try either.

Today's my rest day and I probably have enough minutes from my 15 miler to cover my exercise for the week but I figure I'll go out for a walk. I miss just going out and just walking ... everything lately is training runs! Last month, I put in 78.12 miles. I'm thinking it should have been higher - I skipped a bunch of my weekday runs  We'll see how bad that comes back to bite me on my 30K.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

I did the half last January with Sally and she really doesn't want to do it again this january and I was sick so I did the full by myself. Normally a buddy from Nashville does the races with me. I used to do them with my ex before that.

I guess I'll just play it by ear and chat with the DR and the Wish folk I run into.

I agree, the waivers are so exciting!

Vicky: Yes, we're going to try and run together (though not side by side, just in the same race).

I used Asic Kayanos this year and I'm trying to track down a pair for under 200. No one has them on sale anywhere it seems! I started out in NB ones but they also have nothing on sale in my size/style. DBF picked up a pair this weekend though for 50$ which is amazing because he wears size 15s and he's ever had a foot assessment for running so they did it on the spot. He pronates and they had one pair left for pronators that was on sale in his size. Lucky him finding a pair for 50$ lol

Where did you get yours at? I've tried everywhere online and offline in the area that I can think of but most only have the Kayanos (16 and 17) for 200. It amazes me that they can sell older models are the new models' prices. :sad2:
