:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

party: Happy Birthday Lynn!! party:

:bday:

Hope you're having a fabulous day and Scott is spoiling you rotten!

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Hope the weather stays good for then next few weeks for your training. If you come up with the mango buttercream let us know, we love anything with mango! Again, doesn’t matter to us whether it is a key chain or ribbon. We have some snow on the ground, but the main problem is the blowing and drifting snow - it is always difficult here to say how much snow because of the drifting, some places are bare, other places have 1 to 3 foot drifts. I do not think we got much snow, just covering the ground, but it is sure blowing. thanks for the birthday wishes - yes, Scott is spoiling me rotten!

Kim - No more marathons for us - the most we can handle are the 5K’s and they need to be done at a fairly slow pace, but cycling is great for the knees, my knee does not bother me even on the longest rides, and it will hurt if I do not get on a bike almost daily. Once you retire, it is much easier to find the time to exercise LOL

Dave - Dogs all have their own personality. I also like the “Flee” repeats, but my problem was with my dogs wanting to fight other dogs, not the dogs coming after me, they would come up to us expecting to play, and Taiya would jump them. I do like your definition of marathon! Sounds like a fun workout - much more fun than “interval training”.

Tandy - I never had dogs I could demand feed, all mine would eat everything put out in one sitting and then want more. Have fun with your new toy. Good job on the 95 on your test!

Emily - Good job on your first turkey!

Rick - Be sure to post pictures after the weekend!

AFM - No walk this morning - snow, wind at 28mph, temp 20F translates to -12F by our weather station! Weather dudette says we hit our high temp already, just going down from here. Guess it will be an inside day for sure! I do not plan to leave the house unless I have to. Yesterday I did get in an hour on the spin bike and some pushups and planks.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning Vicky and Lynn.

Happy Birthday Lynn, I must say that years have been good to you, you look at least 10 years younger than you are.

I'm wondering when we are going to experience some global warming. Our last three winters have been record cold. I sure hope the early cold spell here isn't an indication of what's to come. It was 28 degrees here this morning. I really would like to go to Disney and wear shorts this January.

I'm resting today, 14.5 hard miles for the last three days. Tomorrow I'll be back at the track for a hard workout and maybe Saturday an 8 miler.

Have an awesome first of the last month before the Disney adventure.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team. I have a rare opportunity to post in the evening.

Rick: Wow! How are you feeling? I hope that stupid driver didn't seriously hurt you. I am always amazed at how oblivious drivers are to walkers and runners. I have had to give people some very mean stares to keep them from 'going for it' right over me.

Dave: Good idea to take a break today. Get out there and hit it hard this weekend. I am actually kind of happy about the cold. I didn't realize how overheated I get running until this summer. Unfortunately, I get to go walk the dog tomorrow in the low 20s. Yuck.

Lynn: Happy birthday. Any big plans for tonight?

AFM: I am hitting the homestretch for this semester. School next week and then, FINALS WEEK!!!! I did my oral presentation in Comp today and hated it, but did well. I only have 2 finals, instead of 3, so that's great. I'm planning a party in my anatomy/physiology class. We're going to have snacks while we take our final.
Ran 2 miles with Harrison today. It was kind of funny, because I feel like I didn't do anything today, only doing 2. I'm going to run 4 or 5 tomorrow and the same on Saturday. Then, 12 on my long run Monday.
I was hoping to get decorating done this weekend, but I think I'm going to focus on studying, and do it another time. As long as it's up by Dec. 24th, I'll be happy. I'm still trying to get shopping done, but at least I have all the out of town stuff done and mailed.

Tandy: It must be exciting being so close to being done for the semester!! You certainly have put 110% into your classes so I am sure you will reap the benefits of all that effort!

Thanks for your support! I just got home about 1/2 hour ago and am getting ready to ice my hip and go to bed. Right now, it is sore to the touch but no pain with movement. Tomorrow morning will be interesting to see how the body feels. I plan on spending time in the Jacuzzi at the club tomorrow before work.

Hopefully, it will not be an issue. My show is tomorrow night and nothing is going to prevent me from doing that!

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Thanks!

Tandy - Thanks for the birthday wishes, no special plans. You are doing good to have your out of town gifts mailed already!

Rick - Feel better soon!

AFM - We did get out for dog walk in the frigid weather yesterday, then got 50 min in on the spin bike. Today was very cold and breezy again early, so I did not walk dogs, but hope to get out a little later. Another snow storm due in tonight and we are headed to Denver (and DL) tomorrow.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning team. I hope everyone is enjoying the fact that it's finally Friday!

Lynn: I hope you have a fantastic time at DL. And, I hope you're able to fly out with the impending storm.

Rick: Good luck with the play. It sounds pretty amazing. Hope the hip's ok today.

AFM: I had a great run today. I scrapped the 5 mile plan and opted for a HIIT workout on the TM. I ran 3 miles of intervals and managed a 7:29 pace! I like interval workouts because they seriously kick up the metabolism, plus, I needed the speed work. I like to do 30 second intervals and I think I did about 17 of them today. I would like to get some lifting in, but it probably won't happen. Too much school work. This weekend starts the cramming for finals.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Tandy I concur with the higher intensity workouts. If you can't find the time for the long stuff then do what you can with more intensity.

I had a good strong mall training walk, 4 miles in 46:09 after a .8 mile warm up.

Have an awesome friday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Hello team!

Lynn - Happy Birthday!

Tandy - I'm awful about keeping up with firends, too. I hadn't seen this friend for 2 years even though we don't live very far apart. WTG on your test! You work so hard, I'm sure you'll get your average up.

Vicky - My 11 miler was a bit rough. We ended up running it on a Tuesday evening, we've never done a LR during the week. I got through it ok, but afterwards I hurt. My knees were sore for about 2 days. I hope my LR this weekend goes better. Pumpkin mac and cheese sounds interesting. I love making recipes with pumpkin, I will make sure to try this one. That's horrible about your credit card, I'm glad the order did not go through. Any medal is fine with me.

Regina - WTG on your 14 miler!

Kim - WTG on the weight loss!

Sue - Glad you enjoyed Mary Poppins. I saw it in NYC a few years ago and thought it was amazing.

Rick - That's so cool you are in a Klingon Christmas carol! My DH likes to watch Star Tek so I'll have to tell him about it. Hope you are still feeling ok after your run in with the SUV.

Dave - It sounds like your training is going very well! We're arriving Wednesday evening, but probably won't get to WDW until Thursday afternoon/evening. We're planning to go to Kenneday Space Center on Thursday.

AFM - I can't believe Disney is only a month away. I still have a lot to do. We finally bought airfare. We'll be there Wed - Tues, but we won't get to WDW till Thur becusue we're going to Kennedy Space Center first. So, we need to adjust our hotel reservations. I thought it made more sense to head for the coast when we arrive as opposed to having to drive from WDW the next morning.

I also need to figure out my race outfit. I bought a silver sparkle skirt at the DL expo in hopes of wearing it with my WISH shirt. But my WISH doesn't fit so I need to figure something else out. I'm thinking I might wearing a black top and the skirt over black capris or pants. I might try to talk DH into wearing the WISH shirt. I thought about doing an Ariel themed outfit but think I should use the skirt I already bought.

We used one of our runs last week as our turket trot. We went for a run Friday afternoon. It was an easy run since I was still recovering from our long run the prior Tuesday.

We put up our Chirstmas tree over the weekend. We still need to decorate our patio. We also saw the Muppets movie and both really enjoyed it.

Wednesday night we had a bad wind storm. There was a lot of damage from fallen trees around town. It was very loud all night, I didn't sleep well at all. We came through ok since we're in an apartment. We were also lucky not to lose power.

Today, I have to run some errands and then work on Christmas gifts for our friends' kids. I'm making them each a fleece hat and scarf. Tonight we're going to the ballet. We have a 12.5 mile LR this weekend.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Emily

Hi, everyone,

It has been hectic around here so I've stayed off these boards but I tried to keep up with all of you on FB.

Rick: hope the hip is okay.

Emily: let us know what you decide about the running outfit. I need to start thinking about it too.

Tandy: congrats on being so close to the semester end!:thumbsup2

Lynn: have a great trip!

I'll check in again after my long run tomorrow.

Hi Team!

Lynn- I’m not sure if a call to the company would get the address accepted or not. We are going to give it a try here for a couple of them though and see what they say. I saw Scott post on Facebook you guys were having an Adventurer’s Club get together. Glad everyone had a great time! How was your birthday? Did Scott get you something nice? Great job getting in pushups and planks! Have a safe trip to Denver and DL!!

Tandy- Yes we live in a very remote place! I hate it! Fed Ex will ship to us. Once, I had something set up to ship to us through UPS and it somehow ended up at DH’s work. So, I don’t think UPS will ship here. I have 6 on Sunday and 13 on Monday. It’s a cutback week for me before my 18 and 20 mile runs in the 2 weeks after that. That’s awesome you got a new Kitchen Aid mixer! How did your bread turn out? 89.96% is so close to an A, I am sure you will get there! Glad your 6 mile run went well! I hope your weekend runs go well.

Vicky- Well, if it’s not sent through the postal service, they will not deliver to the post office. But, having it shipped to a friend might be an option now that you mention it. Good idea. Haha, 2.5 hours is still a long time!! But you’re right it’s much better than 3 or 4 hours. Good luck on your runs this weekend! How was The Muppets? I haven’t seen it yet either- been wanting to but it hasn’t happened. Your cookies on FB looked delicious!

Emily- Glad you and DH had a good Thanksgiving. And congrats on successfully cooking your first turkey!! That’s great! Enjoy the Nutcracker Ballet. It sounds like fun! Your silver sparkle skirt sounds pretty! Good luck on your LR this weekend!

Kim- Sounds like you have a busy, but fun weekend ahead! I hope your 8 miles went well.

Rick- Glad you’re okay after your run-in with a vehicle. That is very scary! I can see how you would be more in shock and how the anger would not register immediately. I hope your hip feels better.

Dave- Good luck in your training this weekend.

Elizabeth- Hope you’re doing well!

AFM, I finished 4 miles on the TM tonight. It went okay and there were no major issues. I am down to 32 days until we arrive in Orlando! I am also very excited we only have a few weeks left of training. I’m ready to get on with it. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

The good news is that after taking some ibprofen and icing the hip (fell asleep with the ice pack on), it felt much better this morning! Still sore but far less than yesterday. Had no problems walking on it today at all.

Tonight's performance of A Klingon Christmas Carol was amazing and totally fun! Getting the makeup and costuming done really got me into the part of being a Klingon. My scene was so much fun to do! I got to instigate one of several fight scenes in the play!

Mike and Liz came to see the show and seemed to really enjoy it! It brought back some great memories for Liz as she is a thespian herself. Hmmm.... maybe she and I should audition for full roles in the show next fall?

I cannot tell you just how special tonight was for me, doing that show. Merging my love for theater with my love for Star Trek, plus being a Klingon! It was like the perfect storm!

If you want to see some photos of me as a Klingon, click here.

Tomorrow, when Mike and I have both gotten some decent sleep, it will be time for our 11-mile LR. Looking forward to that!

Qapla!

Good Morning Team!

Tandy - The storm should be over by the time we get to Denver, the fun part will be the drive to Denver.

Rick - Glad to hear your first performance went well. Great pics!

Elizabeth - Have a good run.

Emily - Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Regina - Birthday was low key but fun, trip to DL will be the time to celebrate.

AFM - Got sidetracked with packing for trip yesterday, so no exercise, had a party to go to last night. We got about 2-4 inches of new snow (hard to tell the way it drifts), we are going to head down to Denver around noon, early for our evening flight, but that will give us time to go slowly. Have a good few days everyone if I do not get back on here until I get back. I am sure Scott will keep posting on FB.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning team. Just got back from 5 hours at school studying with friends.

Lynn: Hope you have an awesome time!

Rick: You pics look amazing. How fun! Glad you were feeling good enough. Good luck on your 11 miles. Hope it all goes well.

Regina: The bread was pretty good. It didn't rise enough, but it had italian herbs in it and the flavor was terrific! Good luck on those runs. Hard to believe that after this weekend, only 2 more long pushes and then, taper. I'm so excited for all of you who are going.

Elizabeth: Since I'm not on FB, I'll just say that it's good to see you check in here. ;)

Emily: It sounds like you've been super busy. I am going to the Nutcracker for the first time this year and am so excited. My mom is coming in for the holidays from Denver, and we're taking her. I think she's going to love it. Of course, she wants to get really dressed up, but I don't think they do that anymore for the ballet. I still haven't gotten out to see the Muppets. I feel guilty about that. ;) Your skirt sounds cute. I have to admit, I LOVE running skirts. I don't have any cute sparkly ones though. If I do Goofy next year, I'm going to come up with some fun outfits, instead of my boring old running clothes. Sorry your 11 miler didn't go great. I cannot mix up my routine or I will suffer. Something I've definitely learned over the years.

Dave: Glad your 4 miles was super speedy. Are you guys getting excited for Disney yet?

AFM: No run today. It is pouring and Harrison didn't want to. He said he'd do it tomorrow, when it's colder but not raining. I'm so mentally drained at this point, that the rain just makes me want to get in bed, so it works for me. :thumbsup2 I think I'm going to grab all of my books and pile them in bed and maybe study til I fall asleep. I never take a nap, but it sounds like a good plan right now. We're just having leftovers tonight, and we can decorate the house tomorrow.

Today I had a very good Long Run, accompanied by Mike! It was a lot of fun speaking with him as we ran a total of 11.96 miles. We ran the entire time in the rain; it wasn't as bad as I had feared (running in the rain, that is).

After the run, we ended up having a tasty lunch at a restaurant called Around The Clock. My son Ryan came with us and we all shared good conversation and lots of laughs.

Today was a great day! I cannot wait for these next five weeks to be passed us so we can be at Disney, running our races, enjoying the parks, and meeting up with our fellow Hakuna Matada/WISH team members.

I look forward to finally meeting all of you!

Full report of our Long Run can be found here.
