Haiti Earthquake - is there a thread?

Im not telling you guys to do it or not.... i just posted what i saw:sad2:

Why just post what you saw?:confused3:confused3

This is how lies start to be believed. I am not saying this is a lie but I never forward anything that I am not 100% sure is true and if true actually makes sense to do.

I pledged to one of the charities this morning. I didn't think to start a thread about it. sorry.

I've been glued to CNN and the other news sites... my mom is in Haiti on a medical mission trip. Communication has been horrid. I think she's injured, but do not know for sure.

There's a donated private jet sitting in Miami, poised to fly into Haiti and get her group out tomorrow (please, please, please).

I'm told that several of the people in her group of 12 are injured, 2 of them "seriously". But no information on the nature of the injuries or which of the travelers are injured. We haven't been able to talk with any of the mission team directly.

Information is so hard to come by, the coverage on CNN and the social networking sites today was all we really have.

For now, all we can do is pray and wait for them to be on the US-owned plane for some reliable information.

As more informaiton and stories come out in the days to come, I imagine there will be a lot more for people to talk about.

Hope she is ok!

This has hit me hard too as my parents were missionaries there and lived there for a few years. I was grown already, so I didn't live there the whole time, but did spend a fair amount of time in Haiti. My heart is just breaking, those people just never seem to catch a break, the extreme poverty, the corrupt government, they just don't have a chance, and now this. :sad1:

Another very reputable place to donate is through the Mennonite Disaster Relief...you can be assured your donation will reach it's intended recipients! You can go to mcc.org to donate.

Yes - definetly make sure you do your homework before giving to just any charity for the Haiti people. I would NOT give to a charity that gives the money to the Haiti government. They are EXTREMELY corrupt and have been so for a long time.

I agree with AndreaDM - its tough for the average Haitian down there. I lived in GITMO in the late 80's/early 90's and we had the Haitian crisis spill over to the base where temporary shelters were setup. There was huge Haitian political struggles where literally gangs were taking over the government and thousands of Haitians became refugees. Many died trying to get away in capsized boats, etc.

I fear lawlessness is going to make a huge come back down there during this crisis. The UN was there to keep the peace and they themselves are dealing with the crisis within their own ranks. If troops/more police do not get down there soon its going to be VERY scary.

Kathy I hope you receive good news soon about your mom:hug:

This is a message board, not real life. Someone who takes the time to donate to the relief efforts in Haiti is doing a small but significant act that will help and affect people in need in real life.

I am in no way trying to to detract from those posting about this on the DIS. In all fairness, however, the above bolded statement makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

I agree and honestly what is it that we should be discussing :confused3. I'm pretty sure that we are all aware of the situation and are keeping up with the updates, I have had the news on all day. I just didn't think I needed to come here an post something about how I feel about the situation, or how I feel for the people there. Its pretty much a given how we all feel and that these people are in our thoughts and prayers.
I don't think there should be anything negative said about those who don't post, or those who post about donating something. What is it we are expected to post here in this thread? If its just for prayers and well wishes then start an official prayer thread.

And please don't tell me that you didn't post but you gave this much money to donate to haiti. This isn't SMALL TALK, as a poster described it in another thread. This is a nightmare!

I would rather people be doing something, instead of posting on a message board. I and several others I Know have already done so, and none of us posted here.

People really think that makes some of us un-caring? That we didn't post on the DISboards?

Prayed yesterday, prayed today, will pray tomorrow.

Lovemygoofy, right you are that even though there aren't daily threads supporting our military, many of us do keep them in our thoughts/prayers. And since I am typing a message to you already, let me throw this in there as well: Thank your dh for me

What attitude? That's my usual response whenever my high horse is mentioned. :confused3

On the topic of Haiti, I heard that the banks and records offices have been destroyed. Birth and death records, as well as financial information, is gone. I don't know how they'll be able to recover as a country without major major help, which will probably lead to the ousting of their president.

What bank accounts!? :confused3 80% of Haitians earned under $2 per day.

That's what I thought, too! But it was just reported on the news. I guess the ones (govt and the business people) were who they're referring too. :confused3

OP, yes there was a thread, but it had to be bumped, so that tells you how important it was to some people. Please forgive me if you were unaware of the ENORMITY of the situation.

I believe that action speaks louder then words. I think people know about the enormity of the situation, some have already gotten together to help those in Haiti, financial or otherwise. I would commend those people first then someone who freaks out about a bumped thread in the internet.

Do you have any idea how many Haitians-Americans send money to family members in Haiti?

Many of the Haitian adults living here have children in Haiti. They send money back home to care for the kids Haiti and other family members.

Why it hard to believe that that money would end up in a bank?:confused3

I would guess that many here don't have any idea. You and I both know many many Haitians personally, we live among them. Every corner has a store where you can send money "back home" to Haiti.

i personally know many haitians and they all work to send money home(via banks). the people in haiti ARE poor, but they aren't natives walking around with loin cloths as some people seem to think.
what they are going through is unimaginable. what haitians outside of their country are going through is also unimaginable. :sad2: what these poor people go through over and over is just so awful. when will life ever change for them????

Before I say this I'm in no means trying to lessons what those poor people went through over there. It's horrible I can't even image there suffering

I did howver hear on the news that the poor were really lucky when this happend since they weren't living in homes. The didn't have to worry about there homes falling in. Most of the people who did died were the rich because there house did fall in on them.

I'm sure this people would love to have a house but this one time in a million it actually worked out for them

Are you kidding? Who would think such a ridiculous thing.

First of this before I get flammed up one side and down the other. My heartbreaks for this people. My hometown lost a teacher that was over there working with Orphans.

I have nothing but sympathy for this people. I just just sharing what I heard on the news.

I'm not blaming you for what you heard, I am just incredulous that they are talking like that. It's another result of the 24 hour news cycle. Since they have to cover the stories for hours and days in a row, they have to fill the time with talk and more talk. I have to imagine they are not thinking straight. Honestly, which reporter would say this?

I hope you hear more from your mom soon and she gets home safely. The hugeness of this tragedy as a distant thing is so horrifying adn I can't imagine how much more difficult it would be knowing someone personally and to not be sure of their safety.

What a really bizarre thing to say. :confused3Why should anyone care that you don't deem their donating money to be "good" enough for you.

If anyone is looking for a reputable place to donate to, World Vision International is a good one. Our pastor is involved with them and knows several of hte leading people personally.
