Hairdresser Tipping Question

I'm getting my hair cut in an actual salon for the first time in ages and have a quick question about tipping. I've googled and am having trouble finding a consensus answer.

The hairdressers at the place I am going are like independent contractors where they rent their chairs from the salon and set their own prices. In this kind of situation, do you tip them the standard 20% or is there a different deal since they are setting their own prices? Not trying to get out of tipping - I just want to make sure I follow convention.

You tip based on the service you receive. It doesn't matter if she gets free rent, if she pays $30,000 a month or if she is on a salary. How she pays or gets paid makes no difference in the quality and service she provides to a customer

Well, sure. I just want to have an idea of how much I'll need to have with me just in case I'm thrilled with her. And I know sometimes what percentage is considered a good tip is different depending on the circumstances. If I'm completely thrilled, I don't want to think I'm giving her a good tip when it's actually a cruddy one. That was all.

If I get a normal haircut that I'm happy with, I tip 18-20%. If I get one that I absolutely LOVE, I tip closer to 30%. But, my disclaimer is that I'm insanely picky about my hair, and one of my friends cuts it. So my numbers may be higher or lower than what most people do.
