Haircuts at the Beauty School?

Has anyone had the nerve to try this? I drive by the local beauty school all the time, and they have a sign up that says "Haircuts $7". You can call to make an appt. apparently. I'm tempted to try it! Would that be crazy? I have straight hair. It's pretty thick, and honestly most of the time I just trim it myself over the bathroom sink:rotfl: I figure that the beauty school can't do much worse than what I'm doing:eek: Anyways, I'd love to hear from anyone who has gone this route...

I've been doing this for a few years and I love it! I had been spending $100+ for a cut and highlights, and my stylist just kept getting it wrong - too short, too many highlights, etc. So finally one day I said "If I'm not going to get what I want, it might as well be cheap.":rotfl: A friend of mine went to a local cosmetology school and recommended it, so I tried it and they did a great job! The instructor supervises very carefully, and in fact took over for a haircut once when the student wasn't comfortable (I was her first curly-headed client). The only bad thing is that it takes *forever*. Literally, I've been in the chair 4 hours for a cut and highlights. But I'm really happy with the service, the price ($25 for cut and color), and the fact that I'm helping students prepare for a good job. :thumbsup2

I usually go to the beauty school for my haircuts and the kids. Here they have one day a week that is cheaper still - Tuesday women's cuts are like half price and Wednesday men's cuts are half off. They are supervised, and a supervisor has to come over and check out your cut before they finish. Generally, the supervisor does a little bit more and helps teach the student. For the most part, I've been very happy with my experiences. I don't really mess much with my hair and have a very simple wash and wear style. It's a huge savings for us. I figure it's just hair, and even if I hate it, it will grow back quickly!

This is so funny.. I actually took my DD to one near us last month for her
haircut. She didn't want me spending a lot of $$ on her hair. There's a beauty
school near Kohl's (near me) and I was always passing it. I passed the idea by my DD and she was all for it. We couldn't call to make an appt., but had to show up and sign a sheet (first come/first served). All the technicians are "sr. techs" meaning they are getting ready to graduate from the program. They had a supervisor there to oversee all the technicians. My DD has long hair, no syle per se, but wanted it layered. The woman we got was fantastic!!!! She washed, cut, and styled my DD's hair and it only cost $8!!! I gave her a nice big tip though (not required). My DD could not have been happier, really. The only downside is that now when(if) we go back that girl probably won't be there. We were there for quite a while though...she reallly took her time washing and cutting DD's hair. I say go for it! The school near us had all sorts of services available - manicures/pedicures, hair coloring, etc.

I've done it several times at the local high school here. As a PP mentioned...it does take a long time but I've always been very pleased. :goodvibes

I have been going to our local college FOREVER!!! Over 20 years!!!! The girls have to be at a certain level before they can work on you. How else can they learn? Now my husband and daughter go also. My husband went last night (1/2 price) and got a cut and beard trim for $3.00. It is only hair and it will grow back if they mess up but I have had good luck there. Think of how much money you will save for Disney and the good you can do for the girls.

The school I go to has "boys" as well. :)

Been going to our local school for about 30 years. As said, they are more-advanced students and fully supervised. Never had a cut I didn't like.
Only downside is ours is first-come first served as well, can be a line. (Particularly on seniors discount day :))

I haven't had the experience of the cut taking really any longer than going anywhere else. At the end you do have to wait for a supervisor to be available to grade it though.

Took my son there once because one of our friends recommended it. It took a long time and my poor ds was asked so many times "what happened to your hair? Did you give yourself a haircut?" so I am willing to pay a little more for a better haircut. You get what you pay for!

I used to go all the time. Then, one day I made a HUGE mistake. I said I was bored with my hair and the girl could do whatever she wanted. I had boy short hair by the end, and after 18 months, it's just now long enough to tuck behind my ears. We are talking SHORT!!!!! I stopped going because I'm growing it out, but I'd go back. It wasn't her fault. It does take a long time though. At least twice as long as a regular stylist. They have to keep getting it checked by their teachers.

Thanks for bringing this up. We have a school nearby, and I never really thought about going there. I especially think it would be good for my husband to go; he's really not very picky and his hair grows really fast.

Question here: one poster mentioned she left a tip which she really wasn't required to do, but I wonder do most people tip, or does it just depend if you're really happy with the service? My first thought was that this was part of their education and you shouldn't tip. Just wondering what is normally done.

Absolutely, even colors :goodvibes the students are never unattended. The instructors are always around and are always keeping an eye on their students. If you are looking for a red carpet look, then you are out of luck, but they are absolutely fantastic, never had problems-hence I keep going back.
To tell you the truth, unless you go to middle class hair salon, any of the "official" salons that are more affordable, are usually staffed by ladies who have never actually gone through school. Scary isn't it. I didn't know this until my sister in law who's a professional hair dresser, told me.

No, it's not something you should be doing, and won't be accepted. I had the same question and was told the students would have to turn you down. I think it makes sense when you think about it. I think most students you meet would be to worried to be seen accepting a tip.

That is completely untrue. It is also illegal. No salon will just hire you because you woke up and decided you want to play beauty salon. They can lose their business license and be fined.

This is also untrue. I have my license. I went through school. I worked on clients at school. Everyone tipped. The school had no issue with us accepting it as that is the nature of the business.
Would I get my hair cut there? No. I did when I went to school there so we could learn from each other. I also knew who was really good at what they learned and who...not so much.;)

I've had my kids hair cut at a school and they did a good job but then I tried to have mine colored there and they royally screwed up. After having me there for almost 11 hours in their chair and me leaving with tears and hair that was brittle and the color of Big Bird's feather, it will never happen again. The student knew the color I wanted but her teacher kept saying that wasn't what i asked for and they bleached my hair out so bad. The student tried to not ruin it but the teacher wouldn't let her stop the treatment and ugh !! I would rather pay the big money than go the cheap route and get crud and tears for months.

I've always tipped (and have seen others doing so as well.) I figure students can always use a couple extra bucks and I'm happy enough I'm past the "student" stage in my life and can do it. :)

Perhaps it depends on the school, but I'm usually needing to pay for the cut at the desk, then get change to give the student as the tip. Have never had anyone at the desk say it was a no-no.

:eek:Really? I just assumed that you had to go to school to become a hairdresser. Holy smokes...how do they even know what to do if they've never been to beauty school:confused:

I never once said it's legal, but that's what happens. You can ask any hair dresser for a licence, and I guarantee you, a very large number if not most will not have an actual licence.

It's called on site training. Hair salons probably start them up on easy to do jobs and make them work their way up? who knows but why would they not? the government visits to verify licences are few and rare, why hire someone with a license when you can pay someone who "knows" how to do the same thing for a fraction of the price.
She's been in the hair industry for years, and is very respected by the customers she has, and runs her own salon. She's been in the industry for years!!
