My DD1 had hers in for just about 8 weeks and it was always very clean we just washed it like we did the rest of her hair. It was put in at the top of her head, but her hair is _SO_ thick when she asked for me to cut it out (it was still firmly in there) so she wouldb't have it in for her Irish Step Danceing recitle you couldn't even tell that I had cut her hair. So it is the sort of thing that you milage with vary with type of hair.
