Hair Issues - HELP!

I am having major hair issues. The hair on the very top of my head is "gunky" - it feels kind of clumpy, like I have mousse in it (but I don't). I have been coloring my hair for a long time now and haven't changed what I'm using there. I did buy a flat iron and I noticed my "funky" hair not long after using it....but it doesn't feel damaged....more like there is gunk on it. I thought maybe it was the heat seal stuff I was using, but I have washed and washed my hair and still funky hair. I even used just plain old soapthinking it would be harsher and strip the gunk when trying to get my hair back to normal. I'm hoping it's something simple to fix - but I'm a little concerned it might be hormonal (I just had a miscarriage in April) or something else medical (I had tons of hair falling out when my thyroid went totally bonkers). So any ideas? It's making me CRAZY!!

Could the combination of the extreme heat from the flat iron and other hair products you are using could be causing this? Flat irons are one of the worst things for you hair due to the extreme heat.

Well - at this point it could be anything I suppose. But the gunky part is really close to my head on the very top and I hardly touched it with the flat iron. Throw in that I use it on a lower setting I don't really think that is it because the hair doesn't look "damaged". Does that make any sense? I mean it's on the top at the back. And only like an inch of the hair at the root....the ends are not worse than they were.

Does it itch, hurt or look red? If so, check w/ a Dr. just to make sure you didn't develop an allergy to something you are using. Maybee try a "clarifying" shampoo and let it sit for a bit before rinsing. It could be a build up of product. You could also check with your stylist, she may have seen something like that before. Good luck.

Sounds like build up. Try mixing in some baking soda with your shampoo and really working it through that area to break it up.

I agree with the previous post. You have shampooed but did you use a clarifying shampoo like Paul Mitchells Shampoo Three. The product you are using will cause a build up. Also, hormones will effect the hair. Try to eliminate one thing at a time and see how that works. The shampoo you are using could be leaving a wax build up I know that there are a few that do this. I a hair stylist and have seen similar issues. If still not satisfied consult your stylist.

Nope, no itch or pain on my scalp....just my hair is gunky. I don't know when I'll get in to see my stylist but was going to ask her. Any recommendations on a clarifying shampoo?

Out of curiosity....I was using Paul Mitchell Heat Seal....has anyone had it leave their hair gunky? That was really the only thing different I was using.

Sorry we must have been posting at the same time :)

Baking soda or rubbing alcohol will strip your hair of any built-up product. Rubbing alcohol is really drying, though.

Couple of cheap easy things you might try tooright before shampooing brush scalp really good front to back, side to side then back to front an from other side to other side which should break up some of that build up.

An old fashioned hot oil treatment might help break it up too cheap olive oil works or even cheap salad dressing massage it into the scalp area where the gunk is at put plastic shower cap on clear is good then go sit in sun awhile or do some heavy house work. If you have an old brush do the scalp brushing now or wash your brush after the brushing to get the oil out of it.

Massaging scalp good while shampooing helps too

I have tried apple cider vinegar. It works great to get rid of build up. I wash my hair and condition as usual - then I pour the vinegar over my hair and scalp and let it sit for a bit and rinse. worked great for me.

Neutrogena anti residue shampoo works great

I agree!!! Just got out of the shower from using it. I don't do every shampoo using it but maybe once a week or when my hair just doesn't feel right. I have fine hair and have noticed a huge improvement to the quality :thumbsup2.

Thanks everyone. This morning I washed with a cheap clarifying shampoo I had stuck under the sink mixed in some baking soda and then rinsed with apple cider vinegar. I smell like a salad....but it seems to have done the trick :rotfl:
