If you are trying to grow your hair longer, is it still advisable to get it trimmed regularly? My DS8 wants to grow his hair longer and wants to wait a longer to go for a haircut. Shouldn't he still get it trimmed at the regular time interval (about 8 wks) and just tell them not to cut that much because he is trying to grow it longer?

Yes, he needs it trimmed to keep the ends looking good.

I'm sure a hairdresser would advise that he still get it trimmed every eight weeks. The thing for me is, it always seems like they cut off all the new growth. Even when I haven't wanted to change my length, it always seems that when I go every eight weeks my hair, with what is supposedly the same style, gets shorter and shorter and shorter with every "trim". When I want to grow it out, I just let it grow and stay away from the scissor happy hairdressers.

Growing out hair can be frustrating. I would get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks to keep it neat and to keep the ends clean.

I let it go much longer between cuttings if I want to grow it out. If it looks incredibly ratty, trim the ends.

Hair grows unevenly, so only you will know if it looks bad enough to warrant a trip to the hairdresser. Keep the ends in good condition.

I don't get th 6-8 weeks ''rule".

I only get mine trimed when it looks bad. Now that I color it I get it trimed more often, when it needs colored, but before I got grey hair I would go a lot longer. :surfweb:

my hair is almost down to my butt and i don't get it trimmed very often. hair dressers will tell you to get it cut every 2 months "so it can grow faster" but it's a load of bull, they just want you to spend money.

It's best to get it cut every 2 months at least
Because there is a good chance you will get split ends and whatnot

If you want long hair do not trim it. It only grows 1/4 to 1/2 inch per month.

Getting it cut will not let it grow faster, but getting it cut will help with split ends. If you have split ends and they aren't trimmed off, they will keep splitting up the hair shaft, which of course causes damage to the hair. We aren't after you to get "more Money", its just that our names are on that haircut and we want to make sure that you look good!!:)

My recommendation for growing out hair is: If hair is in good condition (no color/perms/any chemical services), get a minor trip once every 8-12 weeks. If hair is being treated with any chemical services, once every 8 weeks.

My son grew his hair out also. He just had a slight trim done every 6-8 weeks. I really like the way it looks now. If you don't trim it, it really looks messy and uneven as it is growing out.

My current hairdresser even says that is a load of bull! Mine is layered and long and I still only get it cut every 3 months. Getting a trim every 8 weeks will slow down the hair growth process big time! Hair only grows about .5"/month (sometimes less, sometimes more) and if you get a trim, think about how much they take off.

Just get a hair cut that will grow out well. I've gone 6 months or more w/o a cut. I would only get them if I saw split ends forming or it looked damaged. That was under the advice of the hair stylist.

So no, don't fall for that talk about every 8 weeks. Only if it looks ratty do you need to do it.

my DS has really long hair for a guy. Its around his shoulder blades. He washes it everyday and uses a conditioner on it. He only gets it trimmed every 3 or 4 months and its in wonderful shape. It was really short when he started growing it and it only took about a year for it to grow out. He has had it like this for 3 or 4 years and is thinking about getting it cut over spring break.

I think we're losing sight of the fact that the hair in question is on an 8 year old boy. I doubt that his hair is being abused with excessive blow-drying, curling iron, perms or color treatment! I think you can let it go as long as you can stand it, with a little conditioner on the ends to keep it from getting too dry.

well, being a hirdresser for 27 years it is NOT a bunch of "bull" as someone here put it. To answer the question, YES..you should get what I call a "health trim" approx 1/4 to 1/2 inch depending how your hair grows, (and being your hair grows unevenly..so just even it off). The reason also being that when you get split ends, it splits up the hair shaft which will have a direct affect on how your hair will grow. that is what split ends are.

This way your hair always is in great condition and grows healthy while doing so!
