DS9 has been begging to have his hair braided all summer. He's biracial, and has very curly silky hair. He had it braided last summer and it only lasted about 5 days because he went swimming. So I took him today (he wanted it done for the first day of school). I took him to a new place, my best friend warned me that most of the West African shops in our area were really painful (I'm not sure why this is...she gets her hair braided frequently and this was her opinion..) Well...it turned out great I really like the style, the stylist suggested adding some extensions in to make it hold a little better. The only problem is DS is in sooooo much pain! I don't know what to do for him. He had tears in his eyes the whole time we were there, but didn't want her to stop. When we left his shirt was soaked with sweat and he's holding his neck like he was in a car accident. I gave him some Advil..any other suggestions? How long does this pain last? My friend's out of town for the weekend, so I can't ask her. Thanks for any info.

Yikes! I dont know. A g/f of mine stopped going to a specific shop because of that, though.... they just did them waaaaaaay too tight, for her.

Hair grows every second....so honestly I imagine by tomorrow morning he might be okay, if not by end of day....

Side note - he's CRAZY handsome!!! Good lookin' kid you got there!

No advise, but his hair is simply gorgeous in the picture. It is so sad that he is putting himself through such pain to more than likely fit in. I would also be afraid that this tight braiding might damage his hair. I think the Advil idea it best for the pain that hopefully will be gone by tomorrow. Hoping this works for him as he planned. I''m sure he looks great for school.:cool1:

My daughter just had hers done. It is painful the first night, but after that it does stretch while sleeping. I gave her advil the first night...She loves it, so she suffers..

Hope it gets better soon for the guy..

I get my hair braided in an African shop and yes they braid TIGHT.
Since many women leave their braids in for awhile they want it to last.
As much as it hurts, I'd be upset if I spent $90-$150 on braids and they started to come out in a week or two.:sad2:

The pain should go away in a day or two. As his hair grows out, the braids will loosen up a bit. I'm sure his neck hurts from holding his to one side while he was getting his hair done.:grouphug:

No advice here...but your son is just a doll!!!

i'd imagine that his neck hurts from having to strain against them pulling his hair, so his head wouldn't flop around. pretty common and he'll probably feel better by tomorrow. my neck hurt after my japanese straightening, which was primarily 5 hours of having my hair pulled and stretched.

good looking boy too! looks like that really cute little boy in "heroes"

If it is his neck then maybe some ice or a heating pad might also help. If it is just his scalp then I don't know, but my kids swear by ice for everything. Maybe a ziplock bag filled with ice cubes to put on his head to help "numb" everything for awhile will at least give him some relief?

And he is ADORABLE! What a killer smile! You need to put in a photo with the new hairstyle!

Braiding hair does hurt to some times. But You should not be in the much pain. Tell them loose up on braiding tight.

WOW 90.00 to 100.00 dollars for braiding good lord.

I only charge 25.00 dollars to 50.00 dollars. The 50.00 dollars is for extra long hair.

I am lucky everyone in my family can braid and charges about the same rates I do. If talking about adding extensions now that different story.

That's what I'm talking about.:thumbsup2

My son has naturally wavy silky hair, (he's racially European/Asian), and he went to an African Salon to braid his hair. He said it hurt so bad, he had tears in his eyes the whole time, and Fatima told him if he has to cry, then cry! She did a very neat job, and it lasted about 2 weeks, before his scalp started itching, and he practically ripped out the braids. He paid $75, and is glad he tried it, as he had been wanting it done for several years.

yes, it happens. sometimes as long as 2 weeks. I've been getting my hair braided by the smae lady for 3 years now. SHe now knows just how tight to do it to avoid those painful headaches. It depends on how tenderheaded your son is! Keep up the advil, it will help lessen the pain

Oh my,that sounds very uncomfortable.

Just out of curiosity, are there any creams, gels, conditioners etc that people with braids avoid because it loosens the braid too much? I would bet on some kind of de-tangler that might make the hairs slippery enough to slide out of the braid a bit.

Thanks for the comments. DS said he feels much better today. It just hurts a little at the back of his neck. I paid $65 which I thought was reasonable with the extensions. I'm going to attempt to add a picture, hopefully it'll work and it won't be too big :)

what a handsome boy!! Glad the pain is subsiding!!

they did a great job and he's so cute:goodvibes

Glad he's feeling better:thumbsup2

I am glad that he is out of pain.

I agree with everyone who said he was a cutie! Adorable!

Hopefully the hair will loosen up without coming undone. :)

I love it too! He is so cute that he looks great either way. I love those braids. I had no idea is hurt so badly.

He's absolutely adorable! Glad he's feeling better!

My DDs had their hair braided at Universal Studios a few years ago, and they were in pain; don't remember how long. (And it cost a mint, but Dad's a weenie and said "but of course you can get your hair braided!" :sad2: )

I sure do wish braiding like that looked good on middle-aged white women, because I've got one helluva mop of hair that has made me crazy my whole life, particularly in good ol' hot muggy Florida in August.
