Walk into Hotel, "What's the rate?" That's the rack rate right? Ah, a discount! Yes but what's the absolute best rate? I hate haggling, reminds me of Morroco, but it seems to be the American way for room rates, especially at quiet periods. Anyone had any experience of this & what discount did you achieve? (never done it myself)

I find it easier to use www.hoteldiscounts.net and book a reasonable rate in the first place, but, when we travelled around on our honeymoon, with no reservations, I found asking for the AAA rate, or the travel industry staff rate worked best - just asking for a discount never got me anywhere.

Travel industry staff get very deep discounts, but sometimes they ask to see an id card - I worked for BA, so that was ok, but if you are brave you could always ask, and if they ask for id, you could have 'forgotten' it - I probably showed id 2 out of 10 times.

I've found the AAA discount card works well, it's available free if you are a UK AA member, call member services for the AAA pack.
