yesterday I was selling pop and pizza during the solo and ensemble contest at the junior high for the choir parents. Meanwhile, a special olympics basketball game was going on.
At the end of it a ref was walking by me to get to the bathroom--a fan RAN after him, stopped him, and said "hey ref, do you have a brain?" It was obvious she was mentally challenged (sorry if that is not the PC way to say it?). He didn't hear her, so she repeated it--he tried to brush it off, but she kept rudely saying nasty things about how "unfair" the game was. He gently put his hand on her shoulder and told her to go back in the gym. This was all right in front of me. She said "don't you touch me".
Next she came storming out with her dad saying the guy had touched her. The dad went into the restroom after him! Well, I thought, I'll do my good deed for the day when he comes out and explain that the ref didn't do anything. Big mistake. When I said "sir, I saw the whole thing, and he just gently put his hand on her shoulder" he said "that's assault in most states!" And took it all out on me. Yelling about how he stands up for the rights of people who can't do it themselves, and people like me don't.
And when I said the girl was rude, and no one should go up and yell at a ref, he was mad and said she had every right to do it the way he called the game. I told him I could see where she got her rudeness.
he was all huffy for a few minutes, finger pointing, etc., until I just folded my arms and stared at him and said things like "OK", "um hum", etc. I realized at that point argument was futile. Jeez, I was just trying to help the ref, I figured the parent would say "It's OK honey, you overreacted, the ref didn't mean anything by it"--not get mad at me.
I've seen psycho parents at basketball games down to the 3/4 grade level--just didn't expect they were at the special olympics.
