Had a screaming match with my BIL today!

Sometimes I think he apologized because he was around my family not his. If this happened while at his house around his side of the family who all but the one aunt and cousin whom no longer speak to him, all share the same views and are all "conservative" I doubt I would have received the apology.

I understand.....
its not easy....hopefuly your family can nip it in the bud next time and insist on no political conversation........

I suppose you could make an agreement with your family. No politics and no Disney. That should work. You can always talk about the weather, huh?

I just take a deep breath and declare "for the sake of enjoying this day, this is now a politics-free zone". I also do a lot of walking away. One day I "checked on the roast" so many times my mother was convinced I was trying to do myself in by sticking my head in the oven. At that point in the conversational torture it was looking like a good option. Darn electric ovens!

This is my method too. My brother is very opinionated and rather liberal. He thinks GWB is Satan-incarnate and he loves, loves,loves everything Democrat. Which is fine with me even though I am a dyed in the wool Republican. I choose to let it go when family is involved.

Talk to him before your next get together. If he insists on bringing up politics, let him talk. You walk away and do something else. He can't argue with you if you refuse to engage.
