Just wondering if you are getting your kids under the age of 9 or 10 the second dose of the H1N1 vaccine. My DS who is 8 has had his first dose of the H1N1 mist as well as the seasonal shot. I asked my doctor if he needed the second dose of the H1N1 and he didn't really seem to think it was really necessary. Aren't they supposed to get 2 doses still? Is it necessary? I would love to hear what you guys think. Thanks!

Considering we don't know when and how severe the next wave will be, I am absolutely getting it for my dd8-she has asthma and has already been hospitalized twice in the past two years with it.

My kids got both shots! I'm still trying to get me and my dh the shot but we still have to wait....

We went to a public clinic in our city last weekend. They had a separate line for kids getting their 2nd shot and there were quite a few getting it. They asked our youngest son how old he is and when he said 11 they said he would only need one dose of mist. It's definitely being recommended that kids under 10 get two doses so I would make sure they get both just to be safe.

I called the CDC (since my ped office never seems to have answers) and they are recommending a 2nd dose for kids under 10. My DDs (5 and 1) both received 2 doses. Older DD did get one mist and one shot, but that was all that was available at the time, and apparently you can "mix and match" dosage types.

My kids will be getting their second dose. Why not? Insurance pays for it and it certainly can't hurt.

Yes we got the second. From what I read, based on some studies, one shot is only around 25% effective for the younger ones. The effectiveness increases as you get older, not 100% for one shot until 10. If my kid was just shy of 10 years (2-3 mos maybe) I'd think twice, but my 2, 5 and 8 yo's got their second dose last week.

Trying to, but can't find a second dose around here. My doc says we should definitely try to find it. Says without it though, one shot is better than none.

yes. I have heard there will be a lull (which is now) then there could be another wave of it.

Yes, I would if I could and hear you should. (Quite poetic :flower3:)
We haven't even been able to get first doses! :sad2:

Yes, my two younger kids are getting the second dose of the nasal mist today. We're still waiting on second dose shot availability for our 9 year old. My husband and I haven't been able to find the shot yet.

All of us except my husband have had H1N1 - our doctor and the kids pediatrician advised us to get the vaccination anyway.

Thanks for the replies! I am going to call around and try to find the second dose of the mist for him. Thanks again!

FYI- I just saw this today.

800,000 Doses Of Kids' Flu Vaccine Recalled
Tests Show Vaccine May Not Be Strong Enough To Protect Against Virus

ATLANTA --
Health officials are recalling hundreds of thousands of doses of swine flu vaccine after tests indicated they may not be potent enough to protect against the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified doctors about the recall Tuesday. The recall involves about 800,000 doses made by Sanofi Pasteur. The doses are pre-filled syringes intended for young children, ages 6 months to almost three years.

Health officials recommend children those ages get two doses, spaced about a month apart.

Health officials say it's not clear how many doses have already been given, but they don't think children need to be re-vaccinated. The lots passed potency tests when they were first shipped, but tests indicate the potency waned after.

My DDs got the first dose at a school district-sponsored clinic. They have the follow-up clinic on January 5 and DD9 will get the second dose.

Trying to, but can't find a second dose around here. My doc says we should definitely try to find it. Says without it though, one shot is better than none.

Have you checked with your local County Health Department?

All 3 of my kids got both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccination through the County Health Department here.

My 6 year old DD will get her 2nd dose tomorrow.

dc under 10 received their second doses last Monday. They are fully covered now with h1n1 and seasonal. I still can't get a h1n1 at my dr. yet. I see they are just starting to offer clinics to people that aren't in the first target group. I would rather stop in my obgyn and get a shot rather than stand in line with kids in tow at a clinic.
