H1N1 has hit...worst possible timing

I know that in our area alot of the kids have been sick and parents haven't caught it. Of course, I did. My kids all got sick and I was fine for about 8 days and then it hit. I didn't start the Tamiflu until I got sick, so who knows if it would have helped me not get it. If you can get the Tamiflu, do it. My kids were little, they coughed all over me, right in my face. I'm thinking with an older child, you can kinda quarantine them to their room, and it's easier not to get the cooties.

Good luck!

Quarantine is the best preventative measure along with the other suggestions for when you are in contact with him.
Hope you don't get it.

Sorry to hear your son got it - I had it a while ago and it's a doozie. Take all the great advice so far and try to drink lots of water and get plenty of rest to keep your immune system strong...good luck. :goodvibes

My step mom got it and was diagnosed with it just before Thanksgiving. It packs a wallop.

Well, you guys are just fantastic!

I went to the Minute Clinic down at CVS pharmacy (no insurance, no primary care doctor, this was pretty much my only option), and explained my situation. Told them about my asthma (mild as it is, I never thought I'd be glad to have a qualifying condition!), and the nurse practitioner prescribed me Tamiflu prophylactically. So my chances now look much better!

Called my son's school and had a script called in for him to get it, too, so he should recover a lot faster (they had offered it to him, but when he heard how much, he declined. Silly boy.)

Still going to shrink wrap him until he's well.

Good job - great news!! :thumbsup2

BTW, most boys don't react well to shrink wrap :scared1: :rotfl2:

Egads!!! Hoping for the best!!!! I would still wear a face mask as a precaution...and don't touch your face...and wash your hands and use sanitizer...

When I got sick with H1N1 my mom or dad didn't got it, my dad wouldn't even enter to my room, my mom did, but we tried to have the less physical contact. GOOD LUCK MINDY!!:goodvibes

Sorry your son is sick, Mindy!

That's good that you were able to get the Tamiflu for both of you. We need you healthy for DAP!

My 8yo got sick in Oct with what the dr said is probably h1n1 (didn't test) and I caught it too. But while taking care of her I saw online some sites recommending Quercetin supplements (antioxidant) as a way to help fight off h1n1. I made DH & 12yo take one pill a day and (knock on wood) neither one caught it.
So you could try taking Quercetin ... can't hurt.

Mindy hope DS recovers soon and this does not interfere with your DAP plans :goodvibes

One more thing for the DAP list....

Mindy gets the Silkwood scrubdown with hand sanitizer.

I hope your sone feels better and that you stay well.

Don't worry Mindy!

I had suspected Swine Flu, but both of my parents who were nursing me back to health didn't even get a sniffle!

Apparently H1N1 is very similar to a seasonal flu from years ago, so anyone over the age of 25 is much less likely to get it. However, keep hand washing, and tell your son to keep his tissues to himself!

I hope he gets better soon! Being sick at Uni is really horrid!

Oh Mindy... have a glass of wine and try not to worry about it. :rolleyes1

Trust me, I know exactly what you're going through; my brother got swine flu only days before I was to leave for Universal... I didn't get sick thank God, but I was a nervous wreck. :headache:

Good luck, and I hope your son gets well soon! :thumbsup2

Mindy so glad to hear you were able to get some tamiflu. I hope your son gets better soon!

Hope you stay healthy and have a wonderful trip. Both my kids had it and neither of us parents caught it even with them both home for 5 days. I know you'll be fine and hope your son is on the mend too!

So, my poor DS19 calls me from his dorm...he's sick. He goes to the clinic, they tell him it's swine flu. This makes sense...he's had the seasonal flu vaccine, so it's very likely swine flu. He comes home (he's only 50 minutes away). Mommy takes care of him, as mommies should.

I look it up to see what I'm up against, and it says incubation is 2 to 7 days, and duration of the worst part is 3-4 days, with lingering cough afterwards. Contagious up to 7 days from onset.

So, this is what I'm up against. I'm scheduled to leave for DAP in 10 days. Best case scenario...I get sick today (okay, best case is that I never get sick, but that's just too optimistic), and I'm over it and not contagious when I go to FL...maybe a lingering cough, maybe not as much drinking, but good to go. Worst case (besides the very worst) is I don't get it for another 7 days, and I don't get to go to DAP.

So, I guess I go hug my kid to pieces, and hope for the best? Or should I lock him in a room, and feed him chicken soup through a slot in the door? Choices, choices....

Seriously, this is what you need to do. Do you have a Teavana near you? Go there and ask them to make you a blend of their "flu shot" tea. It is a mixture of an extremely high antioxidant white tea with a green and herbal. Drink this twice a day and stay hydrated. You will be safe. Trust me. This tea is a miracle...think of all of the germs I'm exposed to everyday with the rugrats. Not sick here!

If you don't have a Teavana, find a lose tea store (or settle for the icky tea bags) and get either silver needle tea or a white tea. Pump yourself up with that and extra vitamin C supplements and you should be okay.

Good luck!

UPDATE: I just saw your update about the Tamiflu. Awesome! I still highly recommend Teavana's "flu shot" tea. It'll help a ton.
