I paid for H&R Block the first year that we were married (a very long time ago). DH was in the military and stationed in GA and I had some income from our home state so I thought it would be complicated. As I sat there watching him prepare my return and then ask me for my $100, I thought "That's it? Heck, I could've done that myself!" That was the last year that I paid for tax prep and have done it every year since then. Unless you own your own business or have a complicated return for some reason, do it yourself. If you do need a professional, hire a CPA who specializes in taxes.
I have read the news reports about the tax returns that are held up because of H&R Block and can't believe that they filed all those returns before the IRS released form 8863 for 2012. The IRS stated that they would not process returns with form 8863 before February 15, so the professionals at H&R Block filed them anyway using last year's form...brilliant.
