Gypsy question...please help!!

I need some help from anyone who knows and can give it please!!!!!

I am using my Gypsy...designed some letters with my carts that I loaded on it. I make a file for the top letter and save it. Then, I make a file for the shadow and save it. A few days later, I go to cut it...they cut out the same size????? Why is my shadow not a shadow?

What cart are you using and are you sure that it has a shadow feature? Many font carts do not have a shadow feature. Try placing both letters on the same mat and then laying them on top of each other to see if they are lining up the way you want them.

Just a tip but you don't have to make a seperate file for each letter, the nice thing about having the gypsy is you can make a different cut from as many different carts on the same mat as you want.

I used several different carts...all had shadow features for the fonts. Happy Haunting and Winter Woodland were two. I will try over-lapping to see if that works.

I had to cut a bunch of letters...that's why I used two mats...figured the tops on one and the shadows on the other. Somehow it messed up!!!!!

Your shadows should cut as a shadow. I don't understand why they didn't. If you adjusted the size of your letters then you need to be sure to adjust the size of the shadows the same way.

Also, you don't need a separate file for your letters and the shadows. If you look at the top left of your screen on the G when you are designing, you will see that it says "Layer 1" and in the far left corner you see a "+". If you tap on the "+", it adds another layer for you. You could just put your shadow letters there. The G will cut by whichever layer you are on when you press "cut". When you are on Layer 2 (or 3 or 4, etc.), you will see a faded image of what is on the Layer 1 (or layer 2 if you are working on layer 3). That feature comes in handy when you weld letters and then want to do a shadow of the welded letters. If you don't want to see that faded image (it can be distracting), then click on the eyeball showing the "Layer 1" tab. When the eye is closed, you don't see the faded image of the previous layer. When it's open, you do. I hope that all makes sense. But, basically, what I'm saying is that if you use the layers, you can save everything in one file to make it all easier to use.

Erin, do you have Design Studio? I find it easier (it might be my bad eyes) to design in DS and save as a Gyspy file and cut.

I'm sure some of it is becuase I am so new to Gypsy. Just got a couple weeks ago...it'll take time. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I just got the Gypsy too for Christmas and had the same problem. I forget which cart I was using. I think what I did was when I made the shadow I didn't have the size set before I put it on the mat. I ended up redoing the whole thing and then it worked. I checked it too in CDS to make sure I wasn't loosing it. I'm still learning too. I am really loving the G.

When I want to later my letters like that I find it easiest to weld the shadow and then layer my unwelded letters on top where they fit.

Great tip! I will have to try this. When you do the shadow as another layer, do you set it to the same size as the base letter? Or do you just adjust each letter individually?

I set it so that the shadows are the same size as I have the base letters.

I think I'm gonna have to invest in SCAL. I hate my gypsy. It's stuffed back in the box and it hasn't seen the light of day since last February. I got it for Christmas and all it did was frustrate me. Maybe I will get it out and give it another try - but probably not. Something about it just drives me crazy!
