Really upset and keeping our fingers crossed - DH went back to work yesterday to be told that a decision has been made that due to the Olympics only half the normal workers will be allowed to take hols in August next year with priority to those with children under 16, our youngest turns 16 this December so will not qualify for this.

Problem being I work in a school so can't take my hols at other times and this was to be a 25th anniv trip for us, we were going out to stay for a week at Grand floridian and the boys (they will be 20 & 16) will fly out a week later and we will have a fortnight holiday together. DH explained this but was told that it doesn't look good, he has never had a problem before and can't apply until 11mths before his return to work day.

I am trying to think positive but this was to be a really special trip for us we have about 6 weeks until he can apply for leave so fingers crossed.
 

Could you complain about discrimination as it doesn't seem fair that people with children get priority? It really annoys me when at work the people with kids get preferential treatment as I do not believe that just because I don't have children that my time is less valuable than theirs! :headache:

At work our leave embargo is the end of June until the middle of September, with no exceptions at the moment, so it is effecting a lot of people. I am sure it will be relaxed a bit further but not until the beginning of next year at the earliest. Then everyone has to squeeze their leave into the remaining 9 1/2 months!

Thanks for all your good wishes - I am really stressed at the moment, so think that this ontop of DS leaving for uni and my worries over his health etc are not helping.

talk to DH a little while ago and although its not perfect he has suggested that if we can't do our August trip, we could maybe do something nearer to our anniversary in May (although this is a bit near youngest DS exams so may just be a couple of nights away) and then he would apply for Christmas and we could go then.
When he completes his leave form he is going to write a letter to accompany it explaining the reasons and hopefully they may allow it - we will see.

I'm on the other side of it, i'm the one who grants everyone's leave, and i'm going to have to restrict it next year as well quite a lot. I really feel for you but I can tell you its not nice on the other side either I've had people say some really horrid things to me. I do not give preferential treatment to those with kids though. I'll keep everything crossed for you.

Fingers crossed it works out for you. I work for the ambulance service and every year our station has a list of people who can book leave in the order of the list, every year it changes. It used to work better on a 1st come, 1st served basis but they wanted it.

We are being restricted on leave during the Olympics but they have agreed to do shift swapping for people who have tickets & they also want some staff to go & work at the Olympics which i'm going to apply for:thumbsup2
 
I assume the reason they say people with children have priority is because they dont want to encourage taking children out of school for holidays and also as people with younger school age children often need to take leave to be able to look after them.
If your DH stresses that you work in a school and so are unable to take holidays outside term time then that should help you
 
We had a meeting yesterday about it and I mentioned that your DHs company was giving people with kids first dibbs and everyone gasped.
 
just an option why not do a disny cruse at Christmastime to celibate if you can not get the time off in aug
