What should happen to BP and other companies responsible for this disaster?

What I think should happen to their Officers isn't fit for a family friendly message board. . .I'll leave it up to your imagination.

The first thing they need to do is to be 100% honest about the situation - but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen..

I also think that if they aren't capable of getting this situation under control on their own, others should step in and the cost should be billed to BP..

I'm sure there will be other things they should be held responsible for - financially or otherwise - but since all of the ramifications are still unknown at this point in time, it's kind of hard to decide what "should" happen..:sad2:

What are your thoughts?

I'm wondering when someone with some authority is going to get really mad and make them do something. I don't think enough is being done at all by BP or govt.

At the end of the day, these people are just human. It was a horrible mistake, horrible tragedy. I don't believe they should be villified and hated. We should all work together on this terrible accident.

Really?
And a $500,000 safety valve would have stopped this. :sad2::sad2:

The biological, economic and psychological impact will be felt for many years to come.

These people were greedy and chose to take short cuts that saved them money.

Yes, it was a horrible accident but I heard on nightly news tonight that BP *did* have information before the accident that indicated an unsafe situation and the info was ignored. Now the Gulf Coast is paying a VERY high price, particularly in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Their fishing is going to be wiped out for generations to come--they will never get that oil out of the marshes. And who wants to eat shrimp and grouper that came out of an oil slick. Whole families are losing their way of life, the legacy that was passed down from grandparents to grandchildren. What are these people going to do? You can't replace their way of life with money.

Personally, I"m appalled at what's happening. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. And our govt isn't doing nearly enough to set things right. It's a sin and a shame that a business from another country has been allowed to wreak this kind of destruction on our fragile wetlands. I hold BP responsible, but our govt has some complicity too. And Obama needs to get his butt down there and take charge!

Has Transocean or BP ever answered why the alarms were not going off in time to at least get all the men off the rig? Everyone that I know that works offshore says the alarms should have been screaming long before there was an explosion.

Also, do all the other rigs in the gulf have that $500,000 valve? And how willing are we to pay more in gas prices while these things are installed?

BP is the company that TransOcean was drilling for. Was it not TransOcean's responsibility to have the valve on their rig?

Also, I have been told by other rig employees that "somebody messed up", as in it was human error not something that BP or TransOcean could have foreseen.

I think its horrible and I think BP and TransOcean ought to be paying every penny possible for any and all clean up as well as lots in settlements for the families of the men lost and the men that were stuck in life boats for 10 hours. I think they should be REQUIRED to have the safety valve on every rig in any ocean. And I think that they should be REQUIRED to have outside inspectors inspecting these rigs on a weekly basis for safety issues within the crew and with the rig itself.

BTW, 2 local men were killed on a rig last week. They were going through some safety drills and fell. I am not sure how far they fell but they were both killed.

BP had a bad year in 2009. They only made 14 Billion in profits.

I think they can afford a few of the valves without passing the cost on to us.

They need to be responsible for the cost of cleanup decades into the future. So much of the oil is below the surface that for decades any hurricane coming ashore will bring more devastation with it. Their responsibility for the mess should never expire.

Our federal government is not helping either. The state of LA was wanting to build some burms to help alleviate the oil being washed up but the federal government will not ok the permits for the burms! I have friends who live and work in LA that is being hit hard and they are so frustrated with having to "follow" the rules to get permits to help protect that area.

It really doesn't matter what I think should happen because it won't. They won't even be made responsible for the costs of the cleanup and we'll all go on with making them richer because we don't want to deal with the inconvenience or expense of meaningful lifestyle changes. This is a cost of an oil-dependent lifestyle; we didn't learn anything after the Exxon Valdez and we won't learn anything from this either. :sad2:

those have been my thoughts as well...sad, but true!:sad2:

I agree it was an accident. BUT I also think that when you are doing this kind of work you should already have emergency contingency plans in place. The time to research options is not while oil is spilling into the gulf.

Agreed. I do think they made a grave, grave mistake. Should haves and could haves don't do us much good now. Do we as a society really want to have the "off with their head" mentality? I'm not directing this at you per se, just thinking out loud.

While I think this may be one of the biggest disasters in our history, I just can't get behind the "off with their heads mentality". There was no malice or ill intent. What happened was something with a low percentage of happening. It is awful, we need to pull together.

I do think BP needs to be responsible for the clean up, but the hatred towards them is unjust. IMO.

I agree and that prob sounds funny coming from a Louisiana girl . I also think our government is a hinder more than a help in this situation.

This is going to have a bigger impact on our economy and coastline than Katrina ever did. So sad, we are just recovering from Katrina. : (

The fat cats get away scot free. I guess it will just be more "Drill Baby Drill."
