Guest attacks security at Disneyland - makes you think about how safe it is...

Everyone is assuming drunk or high. Is anyone else thinking diabetic? I've seen some strange behavior from people when their blood sugar is off.

I wondered about that myself. Maybe the "dog tag" is a medical alert tag.
Whatever the case though, he was out of control and acting beligerent and aggressive.

It's too bad that the situation didn't end more quickly but I don't think the CM/security guard had the training or tools needed for the task. I doubt he was the "hard" security - more like the "move it along now, folks" type.

I think not. Alcohol is not sold at MK or Disneyland because Walt wanted it that way. Disney doesn't want its entire property and restaurants dry because some guests can't handle their alcohol. They make tons of money selling alcohol. Those who cause problems will be ejected (or arrested) and Disney will go right on selling alcohol.

They actually tried to make Disneyland Paris a dry park at first - in line with the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland park - but that didn't fly in Europe, and they now sell alcohol in that park. So it's not entirely about when Walt died, but it is what he wanted for his parks, at least the ones with a "fantasy" theme. He intended for people to live in Epcot, so I don't think he was looking for them to be teetotalers.

Sorry, but if you have any knowings of the corporate world, and you think this matter of what happened is not going to be addressed your in denial. It will be addressed behind closed doors as Disney corp will follow on advice from it's legal team, and also be able to answer to the larger shareholders how this type of situation can be handled better in the future. Just because it's Disney doesn't mean the possibility doesn't exist for it to happen again. Where there is alcohol, there is always a possibilty. Regarding the " teetotalers", Walt is no longer around, and times have changed, and Disney Corp will have to adjust and make changes in accordance with the world and enviroment around them. Yes, life would be nice if somethings enver changed, but that's not the case here, all options will be explored.

I've seen a re-upload of the video, and wow. Just wow. First off, the woman screaming is annoying. Second, there are no kids around, even though A Bug's Land is right next to it. Third, when the guy calmed down, the security gaurd should of left him alone, but instead, pepper sprayed him again, and made him all crazy. He was almost killed! A word of warning to those who survived. Next time your at a hotel outside of Hollywood, think twice, or you may get sprayed by security gaurds.

If you're thinking that Disney is even considering banning all alcohol sales from all its parks and restaurants, they're not. It won't happen. Maybe if drunken guests assaulted Disney security on a daily basis, but they don't.

it funny i didn't think about that but we had an indecent at work recently with a diabetic, someone who was on the ball and realized she wasn't drunk likely saved her life.

Walt died in 1966, MK opened in 1971. I think it's safe to say that MK opened well after his death and does not serve alcohol.

And was very heavily involved in the planning of Magic Kingdom. Hence the name Walt Disney World. He had no direct involvement with any other park.

The only reason we're discussing this at all is because some bonehead uploaded it to youtube. I saw more press about the change in CM facial hair than this one incident. This is a small speck in the big picture that is Disney. Not even worth including in meeting notes.

It was Roy that named it Walt Disney World in honor of his brother, who died 5 years before it opened.

Never say never.

If you read my posts I cleary state the comapny will sit down and review what happened. Changes may occur next year, or in 10 years, or maybe never, but again what I stated is:

"It will be addressed behind closed doors as Disney corp will follow on advice from it's legal team, and also be able to answer to the larger shareholders how this type of situation can be handled better in the future" and "all options will be explored"

Please read what I am saying and just don't react. To think this won't be addressed or discussed at Disney Corp meetings is just not being reasonable.

All these "experts" talking about this as if they know anything about it is very entertaining. Keep it going please!

I have seen people hyped up on bath salts - this guy wasn't. I don't know why you interject that here. :confused3

For anyone wondering what bath salts are, let me tell you first what they aren't. They have NOTHING to do with a bath tub. You would not add them to a tub or a bucket of water to soak your feet. They have nothing at all to do with bathing and never did.

The name is confusing the first time you hear it, but "bath salts" is a drug. I'm not even sure what all is in there, but it is so often mixed with other stuff that it hardly matters.

It is legal in some states and not in others. I think pretty much every state is working on making the stuff illegal. But as anyone with sense knows, "legal" is not the same as "moral" or "safe."

It's making its way through college campuses. The stuff kill some kids, turns others into vegetables (for life) and is generally wreaking havoc.

I strongly encourage all the college kids I know to drink and smoke pot instead of taking these. I just can't stress strongly enough to them how dangerous that crap is.

Heroin and coke will ruin your life and kill you in the end, but bath salts will kill you or turn you into a zombie very quickly. And they make dealing with the high person difficult because the people who took it are out of their minds, but do not crash as quickly as crackheads.
"Bath Salts" are devastating. This was first brought to my attention back in 2010 and no one knew anything about this. There is evidence to suggest it comes from China and is distributed from New Orleans. We finally got legislation passed in our state in August 2011 making it illegal, but federal legislation is still pending. What's so scary about this "designer drug" is that it wasn't available from the corner drug dealer. This drug was readily available for sale over the counter at gas stations and party stores to anyone. The name and packaging is so deceptive, it appears to be completely harmless. Anyway, I agree -- just don't. :(

There is a news report of a man attacking a security guard outside Tower of Terror at California Adventure. From the video I saw on You Tube, it's clear that it took quite a while for real security to show up and subdue the man. Actually, the security guard - even with his pepper spray - was unable to stop him.

It does make you pause for a moment, doesn't it? I think of Disney as being outside the realm of the real world, but obviously it isn't.

Why did it take so long for security to come? It is pretty clear from the video had he really wanted to he could have hurt someone. I mean, it took the participation of guests to actually hold him down.

ETA: Here is the news report:http://ocresort.ocregister.com/2012/02/20/man-arrested-pepper-sprayed-at-disney-park/108765/

The video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0qtqsUAXBQ
I'm just glad no one was badly hurt, this could have been much worse. It should not have taken that long for help to arrive. If the guests didn't jump in, he could have really hurt that guard or anyone else. The statement that Disney issued regarding the incident was pathetic. I can't believe they have NO plans to review the security measures after watching that video. That tells me they were pleased with the guests having to jump in and subdue a violent individual or they are lying to the public.

It's interesting how the "frat boys" were the responsible ones in helping to control the situation while the perpetrator was a "senior". Bad behavior has no boundaries and is not confined to any one age group. :)

You're funny, like you know what you're talking about!! Do you honestly think there will be a big corporate meeting because a drunk was restrained at the park? Seriously, with all the millions of people that visit the parks, they deal with similiar incidents on a somewhat regular basis. "All options will be explored"... you're killing me :rotfl:

I'm amazed people say the use of pepper spray was excessive when clearly it was not. The person was ignoring instructions to stay down and kept on fighting so by defenition of the word excessive, it was not. Now, the gurad should have tried to cuff him but didn't. Why? it couldve been a number of reasons from he didnt have cuffs of didn't physically feel capable of subduing him further. In those cases, he made the right decision by not risking injury to himself, the person, or guests.

The drunk will spend the night in jail, but the screaming lady should have to listen to herself over and over again. "Stop, the children", why didn't she just leave the area? What a nut.!:surfweb: And than the other CM's just standing around while the security guard was being attacked. Someone needs to be fired after this.

The other CM's were very likely College Program interns, and I can assure you, they were doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing in this circumstance, which is to let security handle it, and try to keep the public away from the matter. My DD is down at WDW right now, on a CP, and she was faced with something similar on the unloading station at HM, where she worked - a fist fight broke out and got quickly out of control. She hit the stop button, alerted security, and got herself out of the way, keeping the other guests from getting out of their Doombuggies. She followed her training. And what happened to the guests who started the fight? No one knows, but there are two new headstones in the graveyard out back . . . :scared1:

Stuff like this happens all the time at the parks - but unless someone uploads the video to YouTube, you'll never hear about it.

Actually - using the napkins is not a Disney thing. When you pepper spray someone you have an obligation to decontaminate them once they have subdued. Thats part of the the training. But the guy should have waited until the guy was in custody and they removed him from the public view.

The problem I see is that if they're going to issue that guy pepper spray and expect him to use it on combative guests they should also issue him handcuffs so he can take the person into custody to avoid a long drawn out scene like that.

I agree with you completely, but this guy would not have allowed himself to be taken into custody willingly, thus escalating the situation once more.

Why are there always head hunters looking for the roll? Disney security did what was necessary in this situation. It's not his fault that Tower of Terror is tucked in the back corner with who knows what else was going on at the moment that may have drawn other security personnel away from the site of the incedent?!

I don't usually reply on threads - I love reading them and getting information from them for our trips - but usually feel others know much more about the parks than me, so I stay out of the discussions (except to ask questions of course).
But this one I know a little about. I am a police officer and also an instructor for def. tactics for my department. Someone hit it on the head earlier when they said the propellent helps wash away the irritant in the pepper spray. The spray should be done in 1 - 3 sec. blasts. Water (mixed with a mild dish soap if possible) is the best way to wash it out. Since the propellent is water - the more you spray, the LESS effective it is.
You also should be far enough away so that the high velocity of the spray itself does not injure the eye of the subject (needle effect). The proper "target" is ABOVE the eyes so the spray runs down into the eyes/nose/mouth area - the idea is to cause the eyes to tear and shut as the nasal passages also react - which brings us to the most important (legal wise) area of needing training when using spray.

Positional asphyxiation. Once you have used pepper sray if you restrain the subject improperly you can cause death, since his airways are effected.

I say all this only to stress that if someone uses the spray, they should be trained not just in its uses but in control tactics as well (or be in a position to retreat and get help). I am all for people protecting themselves and others - I just have fears of those that only half know what to do and endanger more than help.

One last thing, only to try and help. If you are going to carry spray (my daughters and wife do) please see what the laws in your state are as to what you can carry and get good, effective product. Half of the time the stuff you can get on a key chain at a drug store is a toy and will end up causing more problems. And contact your local police and ask if someone will help you learn about it. I work for a very small dept., but we will certainly take the time to explain to anyone that wants to know.
