Hello, and welcome to my PTR!:wave2:
I'm Missy, and my DH, Mike, and I are surprising our DNiece (8) and DNephew (9) with their 1st ever trip to the World! This will also be our first time traveling with kids, (unless you count last year when our 17-yo DNephew cruised with us on the Dream)...so we're in for quite an adventure, and I sure hope you'll join us for the ride!:drive:

First up in the cast of characters is myself (32) and the DH (35):

This picture was taken in PC Beach last July when we vacationed with my older nephew and his wife. (Can you tell that we love traveling with family?) Mike and I have been married for almost 13 years now, and I know that we were made for each other. We totally get each other's silliness and I'm so happy to have a best friend who loves Disney as much as I do. Mike's favorite characters are Donald and Pumbaa, while mine are Pooh, followed by a tie between Ariel, Tiana and Stitch!

Next up is Mark who is definitely all boy!pirate: He is the sweetest child and has a huge heart. He loves fishing, Hot Wheels, swimming and mostly being outside, and is also a huge animal lover. Since this is his 1st trip to Disney, I'm anxious to find out who his favorite character will be!

And last, but certainly not least is Jaden, who is our little Princess.princess: She loves everything Princess of course, as well as Barbie, Hello Kitty and all the normal girlie things. She loves wearing makeup and dressing up. I already know that her favorite character is definitely Cinderella, but we'll see if she adds any others to that list!

Now, as I said earlier, this trip is a surprise for Mark and Jaden. They do know that we're going somewhere, but they think it's to Valdosta, GA--hence the title of this report. When Mike and I were thinking about the time that we'd need to leave home in order to make it to Disney by noon (that's just the time that we like to be there) we realized it would force us to be up a lot earlier than we really wanted. Add that to a 7+ hour drive and I realized that could make for a very tired start to our trip, which is not what I'm hoping for. Since Valdosta is about 4 hours from our house, that would put us just a little over halfway there. So, we decided to book a hotel there for the night. By doing this we wouldn't have to leave home nearly as early. It would give us a leisurely day of swimming and dinner before getting what I hope to be a good night's rest. And lastly, since we'd only have about 3 hours from Valdosta to Disney, we wouldn't have to wake up too too early and we'd easily be in Disney by noon--all fresh and ready to take on the World! I think paying for a hotel room for that one night is definitely worth all the perks compared to driving the whole way in one day!

I'll be back soon to post all the details of the trip as well as our plans and ADR's for each day!

So, I'm sure you're probably wondering about the specifics of our trip, so here they are:
May 19-26, 2012
Animal Kingdom Villas-Kidani Village

To be honest, I had a really hard time deciding on our resort. We've fortunate to be DVC members, so I knew it would be one of those resorts, but figuring out which one was tough. First thought was Bay Lake for the possible Theme Park View and the convenience of the monorail. Then there was Beach Club for it's awesome pool. Next thought was Old Key West for the fact that there are 2 actual beds. Then came our home resort-Saratoga, which I happen to love, but I didn't think there were any perks for the kids there other than the pools. The great view and short walk to DTD was more for me. Of course Mike loves the Wilderness and has always wanted to stay there, but for some reason the Villas just don't appeal to me. I do love visiting the resort and walking around there, but I just don't love the rooms. I'm sure we'll end up staying there eventually though. BoardWalk also came to mind, but Mike and I had already stayed there once, and we really wanted to try some place new. So the last place that we thought of turned out to be what we chose-Animal Kingdom. We'd actually shown pictures to Mark and Jaden one day when we were chatting about the possibility of one day visiting Disney and they thought it was so cool...being able to see animals from the room was just so neat for them. So, that's what we booked! I'm really, really excited about staying here, but a little worried about feeling "too far out" as some others have mentioned. We did stay here for one night last year prior to our cruise, but since we didn't visit any parks, and we were there for such a short time, it was hard for us to get a feel of things. But we did love the Lodge itself...the decor was beautiful and the rooms were gorgeous as well! I just hope the kids are still as excited about it when we get there!!

Yay, I'm the first subber!! :cool1:

That's a good idea about staying in Valdosta for the night. Plus you won't be "technically" lying to the kids!!! :lmao:

Are you going to wait till you're in Valdosta to reveal the surprise?
Can't wait to hear your plans to surprise them.

Joining in! We'll just miss each other, as we arrive on May 27.

I think it's so wonderful that you're taking your niece and nephew on their first ever Disney trip. :)

Yeaaa! Thanks for being here, Kristi!!

Well, at first we were going to wait until the morning that we were leaving Valdosta to head to Disney to tell them. I was gonna have a Disney shirt for both of them to wear, but then we decided that we wanted to do something so that the whole family could be there to take part in the surprise and see their reaction. I think I have a plan, but I'm still working on it. I can't wait to tell them!

Darn...that's too bad!!

I am SO excited about taking them. I'm more excited about this trip that I've ever been. I just hope they'll be as excited as me. They really want to go on a Disney Cruise, but I wanted to take them to the World first. Hopefully we'll get to take them on a cruise one day as well!

Yay! My first time subscribing to a thread and what a wonderful one it is! UGAFan0829 is my Disney Mentor. :cheer2: I drive her crazy with questions about all things Disney!!!! Can't wait to hear how you have decided to tell them about their surprise! :) Hopefully I will learn a few things too about planning a trip to the world!

Yeaaaaaa! I'm so glad you're here, Alicia!!!:woohoo:
You know you don't drive me crazy. Talking about Disney always brightens my day!!
Most everything I've learned about Disney has come from this board...mainly by reading others' trip reports...you learn so many new things! I know if you stick around and do the same you will learn lots, too...not neccessarily from me, but all the other awesome reports here!:)

Day 1: Sunday, 5/20
We plan to leave Valdosta by 9 or so to hopefully arrive in Disney by Noon. Since check in time isn't until 4, I doubt our room will be ready, but we plan on checking in anyway, just in case!:)

Once we're all done there, I hope to head over to Downtown Disney for one of these:
AKL085.jpg

And maybe even some of this goodness:
AKL095.jpg

Mark and Jaden will each have $125 spending money, so I'm guessing they'll probably want to check out Once Upon a Toy, and I'll have to pay a visit to my favorite:
AKL088.jpg

Once we're all done there, if we have enough time we may even head over to Fantasia Gardens or Winter Summerland for a round of putt-putt. Mike and I have been saying for the past several trips that we were gonna go play, but we've never made it--so this may be the perfect time for it.

Around 5, we'll head back to Downtown Disney for our Dinner ADR at T-Rex. I'm really excited about this one as Mark's really gotten into dinosaurs a lot lately, so I'm hoping he'll be excited about it.

After dinner, I'm sure we'll either do a little more shopping, or head back to the resort for some pool time, which is what I'm sure the kids will prefer!

In all my dozen trips to Disney World, would you believe I've never eaten at EoS? Every time I see a picture, though, I want to eat there right now! The bread looks delicious! :thumbsup2

Haha! I think there are lots of things that each of us have never tried. I know on this trip, I plan to at least have the Schoolbread for the first time, so don't feel bad. But I will tell you, EoS is definitely worth it! So yummy! I believe we've eaten there on poosibly every trip except maybe one! I surely can't wait to have it again!:)

What a great Aunt that you are!!!
This is going to be such a special trip for your niece & nephew.
I love how you are keeping it a surprise for them.
I looking forward to reading about what all cool restaurants & plans that you have for the trip!

Love reading about your plans so far! We'll be arriving at Disney near the end of your trip.

We also have a stopover on our way down. It's just so much easier and makes for happier children then trying to drive the whole 10 hours it takes us in one day.

We're also eating at T-Rex our first night! It's always a favorite with my little ones. This will be our third time eating there and we've never been disappointed.

We stayed at AKL one time and we never felt like we were too far out from everything. We don't rely heavily on Disney bus transportation so I don't know if that makes a difference. Hopefully you'll have a similar experience.

Can't wait to read more!

Hi, Amy! I'm so glad you're here!!
I'm excited about the reveal, too! I can't wait to see their reaction!

I'm so glad to know that you like T-Rex. The pictures make it look like a very cool place, so I'm excited to eat there as well!

The good thing about driving to Disney is having a vehicle. In the past, we mostly use Disney transportation, but sometimes we'll take our car if we're running late for an ADR, or worried that the buses won't get us there in time. It's definitely a plus to have other options!

Before I move on to the plans and ADR's for Day 2, I wanted to share a few purchases that we've made recently in relation to the trip.

A couple weekends ago, Mike and I were shopping at Discover Mills and decided to check out the Disney Store. While it isn't my favorite location (I much prefer the one at the Mall of GA), we acutally ended up finding a couple things for the kids. First, they had their shirts on sale, so we grabbed one for both of them:

Then we found these really cool fans that we thought may be fun for them to have for the really hot times of day. And since they light up, they could be fun to have at night as well:

1f62543e.jpg

I'd also ordered a couple things from the Disney Store online, and the package was waiting for us when we got home yesterday!! (Am I the only one who's like a kid at Christmas when they get home to find these waiting?)

Inside the box was:
ad70a554.jpg

Mark and Jaden don't have very many, if any at all, Disney shirts, so of course that gave me every reason to get them a couple more. I think these were on sale for $8 each when I ordered, so not too bad.

And:

In thinking about autographs for the kids, I decided that I didn't want to go the normal route with an autograph book. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but knowing Mark and Jaden, I figured that once we got home the books would probably get shoved in a drawer, the pages would get torn or their little niece would use it as a coloring book. I really wanted them to have something that they could look at all the time that would help remind them of their trip. So, I came up with the idea of using a blank Vinylmation--I figured they could place it in their room and it would serve as a momento from the trip, as well as something that would look really cool with all the different autographs on it. I knew that the 3" ones would be too small to hold very many signatures as well as the fact that it would probably be to small for some of the characters to hold--so as you can see, I decided that the 9" would be plenty big!! One thing I didn't take into account is how we are going to haul these things around! I recently bought a new camera bag that will double as our park bag, but I'm not so sure that these two Vinylmations are going to fit, so it looks like we'll be carrying two bags! Now, I've gotta add Sharpies to my list!

The last thing that we purchased was more for me. I recently got a new dSLR camera, and when I came across some Mickey camera straps on Etsy, I knew I had to have one! The seller, redbarnscrabooks was so awesome to work with and she made mine custom for me...I just LOVE it:

So that's it for purchases--for now!! Day 2 Plans and ADR's are coming soon!

This will be our first day in the parks, and we're starting with Epcot!!
100_3587-1.jpg

In all our past trips, we've yet to be there in time for park opening, so it would be nice to make it happen this time. But if not, then it's no biggie. We're planning to spend the entire day here, so I think we'll be able to get a good bit covered.

I'm not sure how interested Mark and Jaden will be in the World Showcase, but hopefully they will be willing to check it all out. I'm a little sad that Test Track will be closed while we're there, as I know Mark would LOVE it!:sad1:

One thing I do have on my list of to-do's while in Epcot is to visit Norway for our first ever sampling of the ever-so-popular Schoolbread!! I've read SO many reports here that mention how delish it is, so I've already told Mike that we have to make sure and try it!

Another thing that I'd like to try and do that will also be a first is Pick a Pearl. It's yet another thing that I've seen mentioned in numerous reports. Mostly I want to try it for Jaden--I think it would be a really cool momento from not only her first trip to Disney, but also her first Disney park!

As far as ADR's we don't have anything booked for lunch, so we may stick to
our all time favorite CS in Mexico. This will be our first time eating here since the change.

Mike and I really love the churros here as is evidenced in this pic:
100_3593-1.jpg

(He'd kill me if he knew I posted that!)

For dinner, we'll be experiencing another first when we dine at Teppan Edo. All 4 of us really like Japanese, so this was an easy choice. And when I found out that they have sushi on the menu, I knew that Mike, Mark and Jaden would be in heaven!!:cloud9:

After dinner, I hope we all still have the energy to stick around to end the evening with Illuminations!
100_3627-1.jpg

Oh my goodness! I so want a churro now!!! I love those things!

We are really sad about test track too. It's one of our kids favorites.

We're trying Teppan Edo for the first time too! We'll have to compare notes when we both get back. :thumbsup2
