Ot but i felt like sharing.

My dad was teaching me to drive today for the first time.

In the back parkinglot of my school it was awesome.

I only have a few more months until drivers ed. starts, and I will be on the road in fall or winter of next year.

Unfortunately, I probably won't be 'test' driving any time soon because my mom's car is WAYYYYY too big and my dad's car is (according to him) too fast for a beginning driver.

It's been more than a few years since I learned how to drive, but I still remember how exciting and scary it was! Congratulations and be careful! And Congratulations again (so as not to sound like too much of a grownup!)

Now to put on my "Mom" hat....don't forget it's a huge responsibility!! The biggest piece of advice I can give is to remember that most accidents are caused by driver inattention. Always assume the person in the other car doesn't know what they are doing and drive defensivly!

It been more then 20 years but my memories of learning how to drive are vivid (I loved it!)......have fun!

Tell dad it's only "too fast" if you push the gas pedal to the floor. Otherwise, pressing easy on the pedal allows the car to start off slowly.

I trained both my kids to drive. I used the TRUCK.

The bigger, the better, I say. It makes it so much easier to drive a small vehicle afterwards.

Good luck to both of you. NEVER start the car without your seatbelt fastened. I have lost friends in car accidents from being unsecured, my children have both lost friends in accidents the same way. I don't care HOW uncool you think you may look. Imagine how uncool it would be to break your mother's heart.

I got my drivers licence about 5 months ago, sadly haven't had much chance to drive though.... darn universities demanding you not bringing a car if you live in their flats!

soooo true!!

You can't start learning till you are 17 in the UK, and most people don't pass till 18 (most drive stick shift), driving is a HUGE responsibility. I miss it though!

I might suggest you NOT listen to the podcast while driving for say the first year or two... More than once, something was said, usually by Kevin that had me laughing so hard I had to remember not to drive off the road.

I had to have friends teach me, since my mom was such a nervous wreck!
As a mom now, I worry that I might take after her and won't be the one the girls want to have teach them, so I try to always remember how my mom was and do the opposite!

I agree! I think everyone should learn in a 1960s - 70s stick shift. The bigger the better. If you can parallel park one of these, you can drive anything.

I had a calm Father, so learning was fun. My Mother was a nother story, I don't thik she drove with me untill I was well into my 20s.

My daughter has her permit right now and can't wait to get her license. She's doing pretty well -- but we still have some "nervous" moments and won't let her take the test until we are 100% confident that she will not be any danger to herself or others.

Congratulations and good luck! My tip for you is- when you set up your appointment for your drivers test don't tell anyone, then if you get it, you can surprise your friends by saying you got it...but if you fail, you don't have to tell everyone the next day at school that you failed . Okay so maybe I failed the first time and I had to tell all of my friends at school! Haha, but that was many years ago and (knock on wood) I have never had a ticket! I was just a little nervous during my first test

Awesome! I can remember that time in my life SO CLEARLY and it was quite a few years ago .... to date myself, I can remember that one of the most popular songs on the radio was "From a Distance" by Bette Midler. HAHA! Whenever I hear that song, I'm taken back to that '88 Toyota Tercel when I finally had that freedom to drive Good times...
