We're going to DL in May. I know Guardians of the Galaxy was built on the Tower of Terror footprint, but are the drops similar? My wife won't do Tower of Terror or most thrill type rides. She'll do Splash Mtn and Flight of Passage in Disney World. That's about as thrill seeking she'll go. Should she skip Guardians? I somehow remember reading that the drops are slower?

I find Guardians to be more intense, and have more drops, than ToT. If your wife won’t do ToT she should not do Guardians. (BTW my wife won’t do either ToT or Guardians, but enjoys Soarin’ and FoP, but she WILL do Matterhorn in DL, so that is one she may want to try).

I can’t speak to the actual logistics as far as drop speed but that info is out there. To me, they’re two distinctly different rides since ToT is meant to scare and Guardians is meant to be more of a thrilling, fun ride.
If your wife doesn’t like ToT, she probably will want to skip Guardians as well.

The ride still had the tower of terror style drops. They just changed out the scenes inside the tower shaft and rethemed the whole building. There are 6 ride profiles, one for each song, and they vary in intensity. There are more drops than the old tower of terror. Our tower of terror did not have randomized drops like WDW’s does.

I hated Tower of Terror, but I love Guardians of the Galaxy. It's not scary and is so much fun, singing along to the music. I did try Incredicoaster last trip and that is one and done for me though.

It is more than built on the Tower of Terror footprint--- it is Tower of Terror rethemed and re-programed. There are 6 different songs you can get and each one has its own set of drop sequences and video action sequences. The drop sequences are synced to the songs. If I remember right it varies between 6 and 9 drops depending on the song. Certain are more intense then others. The one with the most feels to me like you are being bounced up and then dropped again. Some drops feel short and some long. DD loves the movies, but unfortunately got the most intense one when we finally got her on the ride again the year after her first time when she said she would never get on again--- she clawed her dad's neck/shoulder so hard he was bleeding when we got off the ride. She has refused to set foot on it since, and I don't think she ever will. I'm not a Tower of Terror fan at all. Guardians is better, but still a struggle for me to make myself ride it. The music and the story/video is really fun, but those drops...yikes. I have enjoyed it when I got the less intense song, but the most intense song pretty much makes me need to sit down after, and say I'm not riding it again. LOL. Unless your wife is a big Guardians fan, I would say she might want to skip it. To me it is the most intense DLR ride.

I know that it is kind of the same ride, but… I hate ToT, hold to the handrails like crazy and can not wait till it ends. Will never ever go again. But GotG is my most favorite ride of all, we usually go at least four times in a row. It is so much fun, the music and the characters. So much fun, I get happy just thinking about it. By the way, my hands are in the air all the time.
So I would say, give it a try.

It is so much better when not holding on to the rails! So much fun!!!

I’ve never been on ToT but my husband has and based on that version he assumed I would be ok on GotG. I was NOT ok on that ride. I was perfectly fine on the Incredicoaster but found GotG to be absolutely terrifying. The entire ride is basically a series of drops. He enjoyed the ride but said it was WAY more intense than ToT

I think Guardians is definitely faster and more intense than ToT, so if the drops are the problem, then it's probably a no for your wife. I do get what people are saying though about theming, Guardians is more fun and upbeat than the Twlight Zone theme of ToT, so it can almost distract your brain a bit more.

That said, when they did ToT Late Check Out where the entire ride was black? That was intense as hell for me. Because you really had no clue when any of the drops were going to hit and you were in complete darkness the whole time. So, it really is a personal level of what you can handle.

But, the drops are definitely not any easier these days.

They have an episode about this on Behind the Attractions on Disney Plus. When they rethemed the ride they also changed the drops so that there is more lift when you reach the top and are about the drop. Unfortunately for me, that is the worst part.

The thing about Guardians that does me in is the bounce-to-the-music the elevator does before each drop. The “bouncing” doesn’t give my stomach or equilibrium a chance to adjust.

Great music, fun ride overlay!!

Oh man, where to begin.

In terms of ride quality, GotG makes ToT look like a total snorefest. I just didn't like ToT as a ride, I really liked the queue/ride design and the overall asthetic of the building, but it was a ho-hum "go up, go down" ride.

GotG has got to be one of my favorite rides in the park now. It's just straight up a fun ride.

However, if the up-down motion is problematic, GotG definitely has more of that, and you should avoid. On old ToT, you could just brace yourself and it's done, with GotG, you really can't clench everything in your body effectively for that length of time and grind it out on the ride.

If they're feeling adventurous, save GotG for the end of the operating day, so they don't waste their $200 ticket (or $$ AP reservation) curled up in a ball on the hotel couch cursing at you and your mother, who brought you into this world to marry her and force her to go on this ride :duck:

Tower of Terror was more like several patterns of drop, drop, drop, rise. Guardians has some bouncing around as you look at screens mixed in with the dropping.

I more likely to get a bit nauseous on Guardians compared to Tower of Terror. For Tower of Terror, the whole focus of the ride is drops so people get scared as they anticipate the drops. Guardians is more intense in some ways but the fact that you are supposed to pay attention to the story means that you may get distracted from the drops.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, my wife does Soarin's and FoP, but forget Matterhorn. I've ridden it and I KNOW she won't like it. :sad2:

We loooooved ToT, our last trip in 2016, we managed to go on it over and over 4 or 5 times at the end of one day. We knew at the time it was going away soon, so we wanted to get as much of it as we could.

Really looking forward to seeing the differences with GotG,

That was very intense, I was impressed WDI and Disney allowed it before ToT was rethemed. Felt like being in a real elevator without power in pitch black just waiting for your fall to end things for you and loved ones. 😂

The newer 'Monsters After Dark' Halloween overlay for Guardians keeps the upbeat/fun atmosphere just with monsters running around.

I dislike dropping rides, and have done both ToT and GotG and both are on my rather not do again list, but are family favorites so sometimes I get roped into doing it. The kids all find it highly amusing how mom gets scared on the drops and grabs their arms :D
