I was just wondering, I'm new to the Marvel stuff so I tend to bypass the superhero stores but I fell in LOVE with Guardians of the Galaxy! I was wondering if anyone knew if IOA carries any of their merch in their stores since it's Marvel or is that going to be exclusive to Disney? I still hate that Disney owns Marvel now. I think they have plenty of their own IP to build off of, and it just doesn't fit there. But that's a rant for another day I guess.

Wow interesting! I wondered how they would handle that one.

Nothing in the exclusivity contracts that I have seen that specifies merchandise. Disney sells Marvel merch that from an attraction/naming standpoint is exclusive to Universal too.

I think the point is that when "Disney sells Marvel merch that from an attraction/naming standpoint is exclusive to Universal" - Disney is making all the profits.
When Universal sells the merchandise Disney is also making profit from it.
Since Universal sells it as full suggested retail it is of course worthwhile to them and it keeps their superhero stores somewhat relevant.

So does that mean Universal had to start basically handing over their profits with Disney once Disney obtained the rights to Marvel after all these years? Forgive my ignorance on stuff like this.

Universal pays Marvel a % of their merchandise profits...not sure what the amount is though.

They are selling a product this is made (or made under license) by Disney - so Disney is making money on that as well as whatever they pay for licencing the characters and the % the PP spoke of

It’s very indirect. Disney is not in the manufacturing business. They license their IP to other companies who put it on shirts, dolls, etc. So when you buy a Rocket action figure, Universal bought it off a company like Mattel who already paid Marvel for its use. Universal is paying a cost of goods to the company that licensed the IP from Disney.
