When I left my job last year, I "cobra'd" the dental insurance for DSs' and myself. The plan was to keep the policy until DS 21 had his extensive ($16K) dental work completed, figuring every little bit helps. We submitted the bills to the primary dental insurance, Delta, and they paid promptly. We then submitted the EOB's and xrays, etc to Guardian and after waiting almost two months, I was told Friday that the "check is in the mail". What was in the mail was the DENIAL! Apparently, somewhere, buried in the policy, is a clause exempting Guardian from paying for congenitally missing or extracted teeth! When I called today, I asked the rep if Guardian didn't think teeth were important! There is no point of appeal and there is no recourse. Of course I didn't expect more than the $922 of "unspent benefits" but now I will be getting $150 instead. Apparently, he had something done as part of the major reconstruction that they will pay for. If I had read the policy, I probably would have kept it anyway, but for not as long. Warning; when you are actually paying out of pocket for a policy that you can or cannot keep, read the fine print!

Excellent public service announcement.

Reading your policy is very important. Is their a reason you can't dump the policy in short order?

We have alot of very upset folks at work because they chose a low cost medical plan over a higher priced alternative.During open enrollment they give us very detailed written information regarding the plans. Many are crying foul because they either have very reduced coverage or huge copays - everything was fully disclosed - you just had to read the policy.

The policy was the only option offerred. I chose to Cobra it because DS #3 had the big dental procedure coming up. I probably broke even because I got every one's cleanings in, I ended up with a positive balance at our regular dentist that will carry over in my account, etc since it was a secondary dental insurance but the real reason I kept it was for DS#3. It would have been nice to clean it out. I still have $722 that I feel I should have gotton out of it.

Some years back we were in a situation where our health insurance company up and pulled out of the area (and left us with a whole bunch of unpaid claims as well - but that's another story) and we had to find something else quickly because of my DH's problems.. Each and every company I called refused to give me any specific information PRIOR to sending in a full months premium (which if I recall correctly was around $700 then).. It was the same answer over and over - "That information will be included in your initial contract." Eventually we just had to take a shot in the dark and choose one in hopes that it would be okay.. It was - for awhile.. (Another long story..) However, the point remains that we had to pay up front and if we had found the policy to be unsatisfactory, how quickly do you think they would return that first months premium? I'm guessing not too quickly at all..

Health insurance - dental insurance - doesn't matter.. The insurance companies have people over the barrel - they darn well know it - and will not hesitate to use it to their advantage..
