Has anyone been unhappy with accepting the GTY room booking? Did you end up exactly in the category you booked or upgraded? We are first timers and GTY is the only opening for our date.

You will always get that Cat level or a better one, and there is nothing to worry about.

One year, on a popular cruise I upgraded my booking and went from Assigned room to GTY, we got a great location for our room.

2 years ago we booked a cat. 12 gty and rec'd our cabin assignment about 35 days out. We were assigned a cat. 11 but I didn't like the location. I called my TA to see if they could move us to another cat. 11 that was closer to our friends and they had no problem in doing that. I checked DCL's website to see what cabin's were available before calling my TA.

The only time I was unhappy with a gty room is when I booked 2 cruises back to back in a cat 12 gty. We were not upgraded, but were required to change cabins between cruises.....I had the TA supposedly call DCL and we were told that both cruises were full and there was nothing that could be done.

Interestingly, I was able to purchase an upgrade at the port for the first cruise. Since I sailed in a nicer cabin, I didn't mind moving. It just seemed stupid to have to move to a different cabin with 2 cat 12s booked.

When you book a gty, you can be placed in any cabin on the ship of that category or better. Originally, DCL split up families (in Feb. and March), and had a lot of complaints. There were even people trading cabins on the Dis boards (and then calling TAs or DCL to make it official!) DCL is now doing a much better job of keeping families/linked ressied either next to each other or near each other even though they don't have to do this.

We've booked actual category rooms twice and have now booked GTY twice. Our first was a 12 GTY and we sailed in a 12. Our upcoming is a 7 GTY, but we haven't been assigned a room yet. If we get the 7 (which I'll be perfectly happy with), then we'll be 2 for 2 on sailing in the GTY category we booked.

We booked a gty 12 for our upcoming cruise. We were upgraded to a category 10. Excited about that, and I hope we like the location. Never having cruised before, I am not sure where I would prefer to be...guess I'll know after next week!!

There have been threads about people who were quite upset with their assigned rooms either due to location and being assigned a "noisy" room or if they had more than one room booked due to family size and the rooms ended up in two different locations. They can assign two room at opposite ends of the ship or even on different decks. That is the risk you take when you book GTY. I have to point this out because many people think that GTY is a wonderful way to save money on a cat 12 and that can be true but you give up the right to request your room once assigned to be moved. DCL does NOT have to honor your request because accepting a GTY assignment means that you give up that right. If you want to be in a specific location on the ship or make sure that you are not in a certain area then you need to book a category that allows you to select an actual room number. One of the posters who ended up with three kids and her DH being assigned rooms on different decks finally ended up switching one of the rooms with another DISer on that cruise because DCL wouldn't switch their rooms, and they didn't have to due to them booking GTY rooms.

We booked a Cat. 9 GTY for the PC Repo last May because that was all I could get at the time. When we were allocated a stateroom # we were given a Cat. 9. :goodvibes

We booked a category 11 GTY for our very cruise and ended up with one of the sideways category 11s on deck 6, which we loved. We actually rebooked this cabin for our cruise this year. For our WB Transatlantic Cruise next year we have booked at category 11 GTY again.
