My third grade son has strings as a major in the magnet program where he attends school. Today he checked out his viola and had it by his feet waiting to go back to regular classes. Some kid grabbed the viola and attempted to open the case and play it. My son yelled at him several times to stop and put it down. The teacher said to my son....The viola is your responsibility check it back in. So he was NOT able to bring home his viola to practice. I am so mad it isnt funny!!! What was my son supposed to do?? Deck the kid in order to get his viola back??? He told the kid to stop and put it back. Anything more that my son would have done would have gotten him in trouble.

Ive actually been looking into renting or buying one so that we dont have this problem again.

ARRRRRGH it gets worse!!! I talked to this kids mother on the phone tonight because if this Viola gets broken its out of our pocket. She blammed the teacher, she blammed the school. She said her child was just teasing and he wouldnt damage it. She placed NO blame for this on her child whatsoever until....I finally just had to say you MUST tell your child this teasing has to STOP. I will not pay for damages YOUR child does!

Amazing, doesn't seem like sometimes everybody is looking for someone else to blame. What are we teaching our children? That nothing is their fault, just blame it on someone else.

My sister takes viola and my parents had been renting her instrument from the school until they found out how inexpensively they could buy one on ebay.

This could solve your problem, insofar as damaging the school's instrument goes, and your DS gets the added benefit of not having to lug the darn thing back and forth to school.

The teacher's attitude is awful. They get paid to teach and keep things under control in the school. What example did this set for the students? Aside from this, I'd record the date, time and conversation with this abhorant parent, also the problem at the school between the kids. If the teasing continues, and you have documentation to back up your accusations, you have a better leg to stand on legally and with the school. It's a shame that we have to think like this, but if this is setting the stage for the other child to keep picking on your son, you're going to have to do something to protect him, since the school obviously doesn't care.

I just *love* these parents that think there kids do no wrong. Dakota ran into a lot of that last year (I will admit he is a follower and got into enough trouble himself!) but none of the kids throughout the year every got so much as grounded! The teacher even told one mother her son was picking on other kids in the class and she laughed and said if the other kids were not strong enough to take a little teasing it wasn't her problem!!

Thankfully the school recognized (or I complained about it so much) that none of those kids are in his class this year. He is doing a lot better!
