So I called into work today sick. I have a sore throat that Advil is not helping with, and a low fever. Plus my hands, feet, and nose are all cold. All because so many of my co-workers have been coming into work sick instead of staying home. I tried to disinfect the computer, the phone, and even the door handles. I've been taking my vitamins and probiotic. But apparently all of that was not enough to keep this nastiness at bay.

Why don't people know enough to stay home when they are sick? Don't they know that they are just spreading the germs to everyone else?

Now I am at home feeling like crap, and feeling bad for having to call in because we are so busy. I always feel guilty when I call in sick, even though I am sick.

People please, if you are ill, stay home. No one else wants to catch what you have.

Some workplaces basically don't allow people to be sick or maybe at this time of year people have used all of their sick time. I agree with you though and hope that you get to feeling better fast!

We've had this same thread about 10 times so far this season. OP I'm sorry you feel so bad I really am. Being sick sucks! I hope you feel better soon. But, we all have to remember that not everyone has the option to just not come in because they're sick. Some people don't get many sick days, some people have to use their sick days to take care of their kids. Some people are already out of sick days by this time of year. A lot of folks flat out aren't allowed to call in and some folks just can't afford it. Its definitely something we all need to keep in mind when we gripe about our sick coworkers. 99.9% of the time, they don't want to be in the office any more than we want them there. Its just life.

I don't like it either, especially if people are hacking all over the place. A few of my coworkers have come in sick with sore throats and low grade fevers but they pretty much keep to themselves and wash their hands a lot.

I figure, "what can you do". I mean if you go to the grocery store or the mall, they are all over there sick and there's probably not much of a difference. At least when they come to work sick, I am in full knowledge of it and can wash my hands a lot and keep my distance.

I'm at work right now blowing my nose. My co-worker in the next office is here coughing up a storm. It sucks - this is my second time being sick this season, but we all have to deal with it. I don't WANT to come to work sick, but I also NEED a job.

It would be nice if people had the option of staying home and not going in when they are sick.

It would be nice if surgical facemasks became fashionable!:rotfl:

Hope you feel better op. DH has this problem at work. He tells me people come to work and puke in the garbage:mad: I know his work, you are only aloud 2 days sick. They are real strict where he's at. He gets mad at me cause Im always telling him to make sure he's washing his hands aka treating him like Im his mother;)

My particular work place has actually given us extra sick days to use this year, and into next year, because of H1N1. So not having sick days is not an excuse. At least in this case. I wish some of my co-workers had chose to use them, instead of coming to work and sharing the love, so to speak.

If you are able to take off and not get in trouble. Then that a different story

True...except there is always another side to every story. if they are miserable then there has to be SOME reason why they're in the office. maybe there is work that MUST get done and can't be done from home.

If not then I guess they are just jerks. LOL!

Not everyone has the luxury. Even if people had paid time off (which many don't) there are also job responsibilities that make it difficult to stay home for an unplanned day off. I don't ever get annoyed with people who come to work sick. I'm sure they, too, would prefer to be home in bed.

:thumbsup2 I have IBS, so it's not like I have is contagious. Anyway, the other day, right as I got to school I started feeling very nauseated. I mentioned to the secretary I wasn't sure if I could make it and got a comment about how the last time I was gone the room was chaotic because we had two subs (one of my paras unexpectedly resigned and I had had a personal day planned for over a month.) I finally got my new para today ,but the message definitely was, "you can't get sick because nobody can handle your room."

could not disagree more. You should NOT be at work if you are sick and you have an illness that is contagious. If you have a tummy ache and you want to go to work fine, go for it. but if you have a bad cold, the flu, a horrible hacking cough, im sorry you should NOT be there. I dont care if you are out of sick time or you have too much work to do. I had a coworker say to me this year when she came in hacking and coughing all over "im sick, i feel like crap and if i have to be here sick then so should all of you" she said it in a joking type manor, but i dont find it funny. She ended up getting a lot of sick and what could have been ONE person out of the office ending up being 5 or 6. the REST of us were smart enough to stay home. but she got one of us sick that REALLY couldnt afford to, my friend joice has a very low immune system, she ended up having to get checked into the hospital and she got pneumonia. All because one selfish lady wouldn't stay home. She said she didnt have any sick time left so she had to come in, well guess what, that should be HER problem, but she made it everyone elses and that is just not right in my book. she used up all her sick time by playing hooky and god knows what else. what would have happened had my friend joice not recovered from her pneumonia and she died or something? all because ONE lady didnt want to stay home without pay for a day? So so selfish.

I understand no one wants to let the boss down, no one wants to not get paid, no one wants to have the work pile up because you are gone. But i just dont think those things are worth getting someone else sick over, its very selfish. how many people that got swine flu and died this year might be alive if the person who gave it to them would have just stayed home and not gone out?

Hope you feel better soon.. Besides being sick and having to take off work, I'm sure you're feeling restless and guilty because you have a million things to do with the holidays approaching so quickly.. Just take good care of yourself though so it doesn't develop into something worse that will have you "down for the count" for a longer length of time..

Feel better..:santa:

Unfortunately, colds and the flu are most contagious before the person develops symptoms. So you are likely to catch something from a person who doesn't even feel sick yet. That's not to say you can't catch it from a person with full-blown symptoms, too.

I think it's sad that people either don't have sick days or can't leave their jobs long enough to recover. It's a fact of life that people get sick and, when that happens, it's a basic human need to stay home.

I feel your pain.... I have this one person that I work with that refuses to call in unless she is unable to get out of bed....there are days that she comes to work soooooo bad, like if I felt as bad as she looked I would be laid up in bed.... I understand that some people are not allowed to call in sick a lot, or they need to pay their bills...but I don't want to get sick so I completely understand... I hope you feel better

Totally agree with this! Yes I have gone to work with a cold, I wouldn't be able to take off of work every time I had a cold, and sometimes it will last a week. I had a cough after I had bronchitis that wouldn't go away, should I have stayed home all that time, yes I was home when I had bronchitis, but the cough stayed.

Not sure whether it is still a Sniglet (tm) or has made it into Webster's Diectionary: presenteeism.

Let's start a fad! If someone regardless of rank who appears to be ill and contagious comes up to you to talk, get up and back away from him maintaining a distance of at least 42 inches. Most likely he will advance towards you and you should keep backing up. Do not explain why until he asks. You can still converse. There have been studies done where the chances of catching someone's illness were found to be somewhat diminished when you maintain that distance.

In a crowded meeting room, if the only seat is next to someone who is ill, don't take that seat. Wait until the second comment from the same person before explaining why; the first response to each person (including the MC) who asks should be "I would rather not sit there."

In some states, "exempt" employees may not be docked.
