Grrr..."teen" magazines! (Mom venting!)

I receive free "teen" magazines at my salon every month. I toss them. I have a DD who is 11 who reads every page of AG each month and also Disney Adventures. She also get ESPN (which isn't for kids and is oversized and bulky (yuck) )

A client has told me she liked Brio and I keep thinking of checking into that. DD often makes the ick face at the magazines that come through the mail here. LOL At 11, she isn't even into sneaking a peak.

Hey I remember something like "Young Miss".

That magazine was reincarnated and now is called YM. It is not like the Young Miss of my youth. Lots of articles related to sex.

Another vote for Brio. It does have a non-denominational Christian slant but gets into many current topics for young teens, without assuming everyone is behaving like a Little Miss Cosmo.

IMO American Girl is the way to go. We also get National Geographic Kids and some Science spin one, but AG is more fun. DD also really like Hopscotch I think it is geared at girls 8-12. Crafts, stories, history, projects etc.

Yeah, Young Miss has gone waaaaayyyy downhill! I will have to check out that Girl's life one. Thanks for the rec.

How about Justine magazine? Here's its description:

<<Justine magazine, the new teen magazine geared to middle and high school girls, features the latest in fashion and beauty trends, room decoration tips, craft projects, and lifestyle issues that relate to teens. Justine empowers teenage girls by presenting positive messages that are hip, yet wholesome.>>

Teen People may be a good choice.

IMO, it contains a lot of ads/articles that I don't want my DD11 to see. My daughter loves Muse magazine. It is more of an intellectual magazine as opposed to a "girls" mag. It doens't have ads! Here is a description:

Muse

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great ideas. We are doing QSP here for Girl Scouts so I am on the lookout for good magazine ideas. So thanks everyone!

I remember reading issues of Brio at relatives' houses when I was a teenager, and they seemed OK. More recently I've been uncomfortable with the direction they have taken away from the mainstream. In more recent issues I have seen articles about "kissing dating goodbye" and also one about how yoga was evil and dangerous. As a pretty liberal Christian, this just goes way beyond my comfort zone. If you are OK with that kind of thing, though, the rest of the magazine is pretty good.

Our kids and many of their friends like these also.

They have a magazine for boys too, called Breakaway.

As another poster said, these are excellent magazines without being *holier-than-thou*. Normal, cool kids seem to like them alot.

HTH.

Teen magazine (not Seventeen) was what I read in sixth grade. I think the raciest stuff was about boyfriends, but I don't remember anything sexual. Of course that was 15+years ago (gulp!), so who knows what direction it's gone towards now. Once I got into high school, I got YM and Seventeen.

Good Luck!
