now i'm looking to get a used one, not new, any suggestions anyone whee to find and buy on line a clarinet for kids? or adults i guess?

thank you

Check your local lawn shops. I bought my DDs clarinet from a pawn shop many year ago. She used it for several years. My granddaughter is now playing clarinet and it was purchased from a pawn shop.

Check with the band director. He/she may know of a student who dropped out that wants to sell their clarinet.

Please do NOT purchase a music instrument on E-bay. There are many rip-off (knock-offs) that are labeled a brand name but are really Chinese made junk. As a previous reply said, check with your daughter's teacher for suggestions and for recommendations on brand names, then check first with local music stores as they often have good used instruments. Also ask around with people you work with, at church or other groups you might belong to -you'd be surprised how many people have instruments sitting in closets!

If you know what to look for in the instrument like the condition of the keys, pads, etc., then Craigslist is a good place to look too. Lots of people will be selling off instruments as they either leave band or move up to a better instrument.

May I suggest renting to own from a local music store that includes an insurance policy with loss/theft included. I'm a music teacher, and our local store offers used clarinets in great shape for $20.00 per month including tax and insurance. If your daughter's clarinet gets stolen again, or if she drops it, or someone else drops it, it gets replaced and/or fixed at no cost to the parents. And from your story this is the only thing I would recommend. Well ok... the Buffet Champion B12 (beginner clarinet) is a great one. But they are pricey at $625 brand new or knock off a couple hundred bucks or so for a used one. WWW.WWBW.COM is an on-line store I can recommend. But all being said I suggest renting to own with insurance from the local music store that services your child's school. It will make life easy when there comes a problem. And things go wrong with clarinets all the time.

Our DD just finished her first year of band and plays clarinet. I will say that you get what you pay for and the Chinese clarinets can be poorly made. Our school contracts with a few music shops and we pay about 25 a month. After a few years we will own it out right. It's a great program and includes service and maintenance. How did a clarinet get lost? I can understand a phone but a clarinet isn't exactly a small thing! You could also post something on Facebook and see if any of your friends have one that could be borrowed. When my DD first started band I was surprised by all the people I knew who played an instrument at one time and some still had their instrument stored away.

How old is your daughter? How many has she lost? Can't you retrace steps? A clarinet should not just disappear. It has to be somewhere. If she keeps losing them and you keep replacing them how will she learn?

My brother is a band teacher and he suggested woodwind/brasswind (WWBW) as a place to get a cheaper clarinet for our DD if we didn't want to rent. His school doesn't really have a local place to rent from because it's very rural so this is what he recommends.

I think we will rent from the local music store because of warranty and repair convenience (and because DD is a klutz :) )

Check with any local colleges or universities that have music departments. There are many instruments that are sold at the end of the school year.

If you do decide to rent, make sure that the insurance does cover loss. When I rented instruments for my kids, our policy covered damage, but not loss/theft and then we were responsible to pay for the instrument in full.

I second the PP that asked how many she has lost. I would maybe replace ONE, but after that it would be up to her or have her choose a different class for a while. If it is important to her, she will learn to keep up with it.

I've been jealous of all those moms whose kids can take their instrument on the bus, but this post makes me glad my kid plays tuba and baritone. There is no way to lose one of those.

And I would seriously look at whether to allow her to continue with an instrument if she has lost it AGAIN. Once, maybe, but more than that would not warrant replacement here.

I second the Woodwind/Brasswind. I would also recommend that you work out a way for your DD to pay for it herself.

I agree. Did you check with the school lost and found? Check with the music teacher for left behind ones or ask her friends if it's at their house? How do you keep losing something like that.

Do you think she doesn't want to play anymore and is "losing" them? I wouldn't replace it again, I would have her find another hobby or alternate class if she can't keep up with it.

Lost on bus ? stolen at school? left at a field trip? stolen on field trip? Any one of these. I'm not going to have dc NOT play an instrument though. Will pay for it. Have checked all staff, all buses, sent out emails.

Going to find a used one on ebay or amazon now. Teacher says it's fine to get one for less than $50.00.

You could switch her to piano lessons...

I didn't think about it getting stolen, sorry if I offended. At the school here their names are on the cases and it's a small enough class that the teacher knows right away if a kid who didn't have one suddenly ends up with one and would catch something like theft.
