Has anyone ever gotten a group rate for flights? There will likely be 10 of us flying over President's week next year and my FIL thinks I should check it out. He called and talked to a representative at Delta and since I am the planner, he thinks I should check it out. I plan to try to reserve flights the minute I see a good deal. Do you think I will save any money by trying to get a group rate?

It might depend on the airline, but part of our school had a group rate to MCO on JetBlue last year, and by the time we left, those who bought their own tickets and got credits as the fare went down did far better (about $100 cheaper RT) than those on the group rate.

Bottom line - research the individual fares and how they fluctuate ahead of time, so you will know whether the group rate offered is in fact a good rate.

The group rate is usually only 5% off the high price category. You can almost always do better by keeping an eye on fares and booking at a discount. You might not be able to get all of the fare at the lowest price, but even if you get four at a rock bottom price and three at an almost rock bottom price and three at an "average" price, you'll still be lots of $$$ ahead of 5% off "rack rate."

Thanks for the responses. It seems like the bottom line is that I have to do the research with the airlines to find out if it is worth it.
